Miguel Cabrera Communist?

Featured Replies

It would help if Venezuela was a Communist Country, which it isn't, Chavez was elected, and has become more of an anti-imperialist dictator than a communist. Im sure Miggy is just sending him gifts to ensure some security for his family, alot of South American players families are often targetted, because they are rich by militias or kidnappers, see Uggie Urbina. So in my opinion, maybe he is looking for a little extra protection from the government if anything.

I had a friend that was a Communist. Got killed when he was hit by a bus. Proof that America will always beat communists. That, and physics are a bitch.

LOL. everyone might be right though, cause if Cabrera AND Chavez were buddies they would have agreed to set Miguels family loose.

I can care less, but let's stay in topic here, would that effect his CAREER?

None in the US atleast. Some Americans make mad money criticizing their home country

I don't think it'll ruin his career, but he may have lost some respect from the Hispanic population here in Miami, and that is not good.

Who cares? As long as he hits the damn ball like he did this year.

Or just the exiled Cuban community?

Eh... not exactly just the Cubans.

I don't think this article (or Miguel giving a bat to a head-of-state) is anything major.

I think it poses a interesting question though...what if a MLB player was an avid communist, or a public supporter of Chavez? Maybe playing for the smaller-market Marlins wouldn't be that big of a deal, but I don't think a team like the Yanks or RedSox would allow their players to publicly support a foreign leader that refers to our President as the devil. Also, maybe a player like Miggy would get a free pass to do whatever he wants...even if he is a communist (which this article does not suggest anyway).

Hispanics in general. Maybe some Americans. See, yesterday during the game, they showed an ad for Citgo (where the gas comes from Venezuela) and the crowd booed right after it was shown. I am no psychic, so I can't tell you where everyone who booed was from. But just an example, I do personally know people from places like Argentina, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic who are very anti-Chavez.

I'm concerned that Miguel may get some bad reactions after this news broke out. As for me, I'm not going to judge him. If he really did give Chavez the bat, it could be for whatever reason listed earlier in the thread. I am not going to judge without knowing the facts first.

You know, when the 2003 team went to the White House after winning the World Series, I don't think it made them all Republicans.

Chavez is president in Venezuela, and he was (unfortuantely) elected democratically.

I've got no love at all for Chavez and his love affair with Fidel, but I'm not gonna hold this against Cabrera until he comes out in a Che shirt blaberring on about revolution and so forth. Until then he's just a Venezuelan doing the PR no different than an American sports hero would.

Hopefully he is, that way he'll just play for the league minimum his whole career. I mean, it's for the good of the land.

:notworthy :notworthy

a man's political ties (IF THERE IS ANYTHING THERE, which i highly doubt) should have no bearing whatsoever on the character of the man on and off the field. IMO.. the man is giving a small token back to his country. nothing more. nothing less.

so again i state.

rabid stupidity

You're going a little bit overboard here just to be deliberately offensive. No one is going to drive Miguel Cabrera out of town over a bat he sent 6 years ago. I'm worried about the Marlins ownership not locking him up. That should be the concern. They won't "drive" him away but they may just trade him away.

No I'm just expressing my deep-seated opinion. I have seen a friend of mine lose his job because he's a registered Democrat, and anti-Bush, because people of a certain ethnic group started calling him a "Communist" at work. He put up a screen-saver on his computer that was from the DNC webpage. He was told he had to delete it, even though people in the same office were using company time, phones and computers to work for the GOP.

By the way he fought in the Gulf War in 1991, as a member of the regular Army, and recieved several commendations before his retirement in 1993. He still is a member of the Army Guard Reserves, spent 12 months in Afganistan in 2002. He loves this country yet was branded a "Communist" because he isn't a Republican. This is what happens when one party that leans towards thinking Hitler was a Liberal, is in charge.

I believe whether or not Miguel Cabrera is a Communist or not, its no ones business except that he play well on the field. As for him being shipped out, with Loria, anything is possible -- it looks like he's gonna fire the MoY tomorrow......its unbelievable.

And if he does get bad reactions and comments, it shows that people are just plain silly. He loves Venezuela, and Chavez is the leader of that nation. Who in the hell are we to agree or disagree with who the Venezuelan people elected as their President ? How arrogant. :thumbdown

Now as for Loria, we know he's not gonna keep Miggy once he becomes expensive, so Mods maybe its best we close this thread before more nastiness occurs.

Miguel is a communist because he signed a baseball bat and sent it to someone in the mail?

That is the DUMBEST thing I have EVER heard. This thread should be deleted.

As for him being shipped out, with Loria, anything is possible -- it looks like he's gonna fire the MoY tomorrow......its unbelievable. That's bizarre because I am "of a certain ethnic group" as you say, and from the time I registered to vote at age 18 up until 2 years ago (trust me, that's a lot of years) I was a registered Democrat. If we all based our opinions of any group on any single event or experience we would all be prejudiced.

To assume Miguel has communist leanings is quite a leap in this instance. However, to say that if he did no one should care is naive. If your loved ones have suffered consequences of communism it's hard to block out. If a player had an affinity for nazis I suspect it would be quite difficult to ignore. It would be for me too and I'm not Jewish.

I seriously doubt Miguel has any profound political views. To be a communist espeically, you have to be very politized, educated, and an activist, Cabs is none of these. I doubt a devout communist would play baseball (America's traditional pastime) for millions of dollars in front of people who make 35 k a year. Hell, the seating chart at a stadium is almost like a lesson in class conflict, lol.

Everyone chill out.

This is one of the silliest threads I have ever read. I don't think Cabrera is a communist and even if he were I could accept it as long as he keeps his beliefs to himself.

That being said, I take exception to the tone of marlinz fan comments.

I am sorry about what happened to your friend. But your comments show me that you really don't understand the degree of human suffering that has occurred in Cuba under the communist regime. If you did, you would understand why some may react in a way that may seem unreasonable to those who don't have a clue of the horrors that have occurred in Cuba under Castro's rule.

I don't want to get to political here, but I'd like to shed some light here as some of you don't know what you are talking about. First off, the word communism or communist has a negative stigma in this country and many of you have a pre-conceived notion of what communism is, however, many of you are WAY off base. Communism, as written in the works of Karl Marx, has NEVER seen the light of day, except for a brief period of time during the 1917 revolution in the former Soviet Union. Second, Venezuela is NOT a communist country and Hugo Chavez WAS elected into office. Third... someone here compared Communism to Nazism... All I can say is WOW! That is totally ridiculous. Finally, I studied Political Philisophy in college; it is what I majored in. As a society, especially one that believes in free speech, we must be accepting of other persons politcal views. If Cabrera supports Chavez maybe its because his country's GDP has risen over the past few years, poverty is down and literacy and jobs are up. Maybe Cabrera is seeking protection for his family? Who knows? Even though Chavez us not very eloquent and sometimes says some really moronic things, he really does not affect my life in the slightest, except for the cheap gas which is at 2.39 a gallon :) Thank you Hugo!

fan,

I totally agree with you that Castro's regime has been a total detriment for the Cuban people. As a son of Cuban exiles I understand that what this man has done has been catastrophic in nature and has sent the island back into the stoneage. However, please understand that Castro is no communist. He may CLAIM to be one but is far from it. It would take hours for me to explain, but I wil just say that the man is a criminal, a murderer and a coward, but he is no communist.
