Management had about 10 meetings with Girardi on the subject over several months, about half of which were attended by owner Jeffrey Loria. But nothing changed. Not only did Girardi remain unreceptive to many of the front office's wishes, but some of his behavior angered and mystified management. Among the examples: Girardi sometimes answered his cellphone when he was meeting with GM Admin Beinfest and started a conversation with the caller, prompting Beinfest to walk out. Other times, Loria or a team executive would approach Girardi in the clubhouse, ready to start a conversation, and Girardi would keep walking. Also, Girardi refused to attend a function for team sponsors in New York when the team was there -- even though management told him it was important. But at least Girardi took his firing calmly and respectfully Tuesday. ? The front office also was infuriated with bench coach Gary Tuck. Marlins sources said Tuck several times accused Marlins ownership of being cheap. Tuck, third base coach Bobby Meacham and bullpen coach Mike Harkey won't be invited back. Fredi Gonzalez said the team is considering retaining coaches Perry Hill, Jim Presley and Rick Kranitz. ? Gonzalez said he asked several umpires how Loria treated them. (Girardi lost any remaining support he had from Loria on Aug. 6, when he told Loria to stop yelling at the umps.) 'The umpires said, `We never had a problem,' '' Gonzalez said. ``They said he's fine. If he wants to yell, he can yell.'' ? Gonzalez said he believes the Marlins intend to keep Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. Beinfest called them ''very important'' but stopped short of saying they'll definitely return. . . . Beinfest said Jeremy Hermida, who was a disappointment, ''probably will be given every opportunity'' to earn the right field job, ``but it won't be without competition.'' ? Any money Girardi gets from a new team will reduce (or eliminate) the estimated $1.5 million the Marlins owe him. ? Gonzalez, whom the Nationals wanted to interview, already was mulling his lineup Tuesday. He said leadoff hitter Hanley Ramirez ``is not too far away from being a middle-of-the-order hitter.'' ? Beinfest shed some light on what area he expects to have input in with a manager: 'When you have a young team with unproven players . . . I think there can be spirited conversations about usage. Not about playing Monday, Wednesday and Friday and batting `X' in the lineup. But talking generally about usage should happen . . . because I am in charge of the personnel. Nobody is asking everyone to agree on everything.'' Gonzalez said he didn't ask Beinfest what went wrong with Girardi, but Loria told him the team likes to make decisions as a group. October 4, 200619 yr Hanley to a 3 hitter already? Who leads off then? Always been my wonder as well. Even if Hanley might sooner or later make a better #3 hitter than leadoff, no one on the team is a better lead off hitter than Hanley. As far as all the stories about Girardi...I've scratched my head about all that stuff for a while, but it does spur the thought that Girardi has never denied any of it. And if you were to actually believe the stuff said here, I'd almost think he was trying to get fired. Really odd.

October 4, 200619 yr The leadoff spot is a very important position. Every bit as the 2, 3, or cleanup spot. And don't discount the effect a 30-30 batter can have at the top of the lineup - home runs have significant vale throughout the lineup and in any situation. Whomever takes over for him better be significantly better in core responsibilites of a leadoff batter (getting on base and better than average baserunning instincts).
October 4, 200619 yr I've been saying it all year that Hanley wont be at the leadoff spot for much longer. He needs to be moved back into the lineup so that he can hit with more runners on base. I dont see our leadoff hitter next year on our roster right now. We will pick someone up to leadoff.

October 4, 200619 yr I'd also like to mention that if our pitchers continue to be relatively productive hitters next year, there could conceivably be little downside to keeping Hanley in the #1 spot.

(not my own choice but a good reason at least why he would moved back to 2-3) PLEASE GOD NO he hit .292 this year, and can definitely cover the ground at DS... just sayin.
