Marlins prospect arrested in Greensboro

By Rob Daniels and Eric J.S. Townsend

Staff Writer

GREENSBORO -- Jeff Allison, the troubled Florida Marlins baseball prospect who pitched for the 2005 Grasshoppers after surviving a near-fatal heroin overdose the previous year, is facing three felony charges -- one for heroin possession and two for possession of stolen vehicles on consecutive days in the Triad last week.

Greensboro police records indicate Allison, 21, was arrested Oct. 25 when an officer saw him driving a white 2002 Dodge Ram truck that had been reported stolen. A chase ensued and resulted in the discovery of heroin and drug paraphernalia in the truck, specifically syringes.

A day earlier, High Point police arrested Allison and charged him with possession of a different stolen vehicle.

Allison faces court appearances Nov. 30 in Greensboro and Dec. 4 in High Point.

Dear Lord... stolen cars, heroin, fleeing police -- what next?

Talk about a lost cause.

Let's release this guy already, he's a waste of space on our minor league roster. Forgive me his upside is great, but he needs to learn a lesson already!

Game...Set...Match...Time to move on. A wasted 1st round pick. Someone just didn't do their Homework, this is not a sudden onset of problematic behaviors

At least he's still alive...only thing keeping him from being Lenny Bias 2.0.

He's already thrown away his life. He's just gonna wind up costing the tax payers of North Carolina or Massachusetts in the near future. What a waste of a life. I wouldn't shed a tear for the SOB.

BTW in that same draft the Marlins selected Jai Miller one pick before the Red Sox anounced they were picking a kid by the name of Jon Papelbon

I don't really care what happens to this dude anymore. I used to feel bad for him but he's really lost himself now.

I remember the day we signed this kid, he was supposed to be the steal of the draft. The next Josh Beckett.

Wow.

I wasn't on here for a few days and I missed this. This is more than a waste of talent, it's a sad waste of life. This kid needs to be locked up in rehab for a year. It's a miracle he's still alive but how long before his luck runs out.

New court date set for former Hopper

Former Grasshoppers pitcher Jeff Allison now is scheduled to appear in Guilford County's drug court Dec. 28, the clerk's office said Friday. A hearing originally scheduled for Thursday was postponed.

Allison, 22, faces one felony count of heroin possession, two felony counts of possessing a stolen motor vehicle and three misdemeanors in connection with arrests on consecutive days in October -- one in Greensboro, the other in High Point. The charges carry a possible maximum sentence of four years in prison, but attorneys have been discussing the option of transferring the matters to drug court, an alternative sentencing program in which defendants avoid jail time and are cleared of charges if they successfully complete a rehabilitation program.

Allison, the 16th player taken in the 2003 draft, is a right-hander from Peabody, Mass., who has missed two of the past three seasons and has admitted to drug use. His comeback bid in 2005 included 18 starts for the Hoppers, and he has lived in Greensboro off and on for 18 months.
