No big hike in payroll likely for 2007

Alfonso Soriano won't get the free-agent money he's looking for from the Florida Marlins. You can bank on the Marlins not having the high bid in the Daisuke Matsuzaka posting process either.

In spite of a 2006 team that performed better than most anticipated, next season's goal in large part remains the same: Continue developing and identifying the nucleus of young players that will form the franchise's next World Series contender.

That means no new big-ticket items, but the Marlins are looking to keep the ones they have.

Owner Jeffrey Loria has provided his front office with the 2007 budget. Last year, the Marlins spent about $19.6 million (including deferred payments) on the major league roster. The 2007 figure is expected to remain in that area.

General Manager Admin Beinfest would neither talk about payroll specifics nor whether the projected outlay would enable the Marlins to keep both arbitration-eligible stars, Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. The two are expected to earn a combined $12 million or more.

"I'd rather not comment on specific players and how they fit in the payroll other than to say those are very good, important players to the Marlins," Beinfest said.

If the Marlins' track record holds true, neither Willis nor Cabrera will have security beyond 2007.

"Those are pretty hefty numbers and years," said Beinfest, acknowledging the swirling speculation around Willis in particular. "We recognize his contributions, what he's done in the past and what he can do for us in the future."

Anyone surprised at all?

Hey Jeff, if you spend $5 mil on bullpen, THEN I'll be happy.

As of right now, there is a "Now Hiring" sign hanging on the entrance of our bullpen.

Who do we have? Messenger, Mitre, and Pinto? Not a good start.

The same process of bringing in washed up types (Ligtenberg, Herges, JoBo, etc) will be undertaken to supplement the younger guys. I hope Beinfest spends some scouting money on the minor league FAs to come up with a few guys.

Lightenberg didn't even make the MLB roster, so I wouldn't count him.

Borowski, Jones, and Benitez are good examples. The only problem is, can we do it a 4th straight year?

I would recommend going after Danny Graves, Scott Williamson, or the recently released Keith Foulke.

Loria needs to spend a little more, please? lol

I would guess another closer FA signing, done the past 3 years.

If you take Cabrera and DTrain @ $12 million and 23 others @ minimum wage ($380k) you get $20.7 million which is already higher than last year's $19.6 million.

Either payroll goes up or Miguel or DTRain get salary dumped.

I suppose Miguel or DTrain could sign a multi-year deal deferring '07 money into the future but that's not a likely to happen.

You don't think you're taking this just a bit too literally do you?

the article makes it sound like Soriano wants to come here....?

:lol ...the article may make it sound like it, but why in hell would soriano want to come here?

I have no fear, the Marlins will lock up Cabs

If you have no fear, then you have no brain.

I have no brain because I'm confident in what the FO will do? Or is it because I trust that the FO will do whats best for the team

Hopefully the Marlins will raise the payroll the season after next, when Vernon Wells is a free agent. But before they think about getting anyone else they have got to sign Cabrara and Willis long term.

Nothing big will happen until the new stadium deal is done.

I suspect we will sign Willis and Cabrera, but thats it. Our "needs" will be filled with whatever can be found cheaply. We will be a .500 team until we get the stadium and the payroll is hiked to what it should be.

Spending less than what you make in revenue sharing should be illegal.

There's more to the payroll than the 25-man roster...but I definitely agree

Based on their past actions, all indications are that you should be fearful. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that they will keep Miggy. Do I want them to? You betcha. But am I confident? Hell no.

This does not mean there will be no increase in payroll. A "Major Payroll Hike" is relative. With no new numbers, this article is meaningless.

If they were going to trade Cabrera or Willis, they would have done it last season or last offseason. Between one, the other or both, I think you could literally have any group of players you want. I actually *gasp* believe it that they intended to build a young talented team that will be competetive (with DTrain & Cabs as the core) without the inflated salaries rather than just dump salary, and the 06 season is proof.

I believe I read in Barry Jackson's column in today's Herald that payroll has been increased to accomodate both Cabrera and Willis.

Past actions? Aside from last year, I recall only one time that a player that had use to the club was traded away over worries of a salary increase. That being Derrek Lee.
