Here is a column that I am sure will fuel Marlins fans' fire. Moronotti is waxing poetically about how cute and cuddly, in his own mind, Cubdom is. And is goes on and on talking about how the Cubs being what he believes is "America's Team." He must have written it with his pants around the ankles.

but in reality, for the most part, it really is Florida vs. America. I'm up here in SC, and all the Brave fans are rootin for the Cubs..."Oh wouldn't it be great if the Cubs finally won it all?" Hell no! I think its hilarious that they haven't won in 95 years. Everyone thinks that the Cubs are the underdogs, not realizing that most publications had the Marlins finishing 3rd or 4th (or sometimes even last, behind the Expos) in the NL East, with the Cubs winning the NL Central or Wild Card. The Cubs' payroll is much higher than ours, and we still came out with a better record. Hell, we don't even get homefield advantage (which, you would think, would be given to the better team). But, that's alright. Because, Cub fans are douche-bags. I don't care who roots for the Cubs. When we beat em, they are gonna go right back to their favorite phrase "wait till next year!"

 

Go Marlins, and lets kick some Cub a**.

We certainly are the underdogs. But f course, we are villefied. I agree, the Cubs have been underachieving all season long whereas we have been getting it done. For us to actually get noticed, we will have to beat the Giants AND the Cubs - where we will have to face either the Yankees or Red Sox. If anything, America should be rooting for us because we are the little team that is getting it done. I just hope that appreciation for this team will spread beyond S Fl someday. I want to see us win just in spite of everyone.

If you want to spread your fan base - first you have to ACQUIRE one.

Let me ask you this, though; where were the fans before the Marlins started threatening to become a playoff team? Even *this* year, attendance has been garbage up until September.

I agree whole heartedly that the Yankees have fair weather fans. 26 World Championships definately have something to do with that - no argument. The fact that they've been around since 1903 may have something to do with that as well... However, the Yanks also have some of the most loyal fans in baseball. Sure, we can be loud and crass and vulgar and obnoxious and cocky and arrogant. But we we're like that in the 80's, too. Even when there's little to root for, we have a legion of loyal loud Yankee fans.

 

Now that you have a good team, get your friends into the seats. Get your media behind your team. Raise your children to love them fish. And, by God, don't ever have another fire sale!

Alright, but we DO have fans. That's the point. Believe it or not, there's quite a bunch of us. And hey, even if there are a lot of bandwagoners, I'm happy they at least support us and help the team. :hat

They were wearing Yankees caps and t-shirts, that's what the fans were doing before the Marlins got into the race! Here in S FL, there are no worse fans than Yankee fans (OK...NY Jets fans are downright disgusting), they are the epitome of "front-runners"! Most of them have lived here 20,30, 40 years, they have no reason being Yankees fans except that they are cool and hip.

 

Get it? It's hard being a true loyal fan of the hometown teams here. I hope that the success of the Marlins will bring in a whole new generation of fans.

More than half of Cubs fans aren't TRUE fans either. You mention that they fill up their park win or lose, however they don't care about the team one way or another. The Urinal is a tourist trap. They go there and socialize and get drunk and then when they go home they ask "Who won?" They are the least educated baseball fans on the planet and I am not going to back down from that statement. It's easy to fill up your park when the media drools about how "majestic and historic" it is and one of the nation's most circulated newpapers owns the team. Cubs fans are not loyal so do not look at them filling their park as being so. It's a very false view.

A Marlins-Yankees WS would be interesting, with Marlins fans and transplanted New Yorkers who still cheer for the Yankees all living in South Florida.

yankeefan is right. There isn't a "fan base" outside of the 15K that were there night in and night out throughout not just this year but the s***ty ones too. Thats the problem with spreading the word about this team. I will never question the loyalty of the fans I've met on here thats for sure. Outside of the So. Florida bubble theres not much.

 

btw: Albq is all for the Fish due to the Isotopes. Every playoff game so far the bars have been packed with people wearing Marlins gear (they sell it at Isotope Park of course). There are some serious baseball fans here who have really taken a shine to our little team. I thought I was alone but then i was found...........

Consider me one of the "passionate fish maniacs".

 

I've had season tickets since 1997 and have endured several hundred meaningless games since then. This post season run has been extremely gratifying for me and the the rest of the fish maniacs.

 

Hopefully, this exposure will bring the crowds back for next year. As much as I'd like to hope, I don't think that will be the case however. This area has shown it's true colors too many times before. In any event, I'll be a maniacal supporter of the Fish until the end; whenever that may be.

Backstop, being a season ticket holder let me ask you this; Say the Fish win the World Series - do you see 20-25K consistently next year? What about if they just win the pennant but fall short in the series? Even more, what if they don't win the pennant? The year the Marlins have had is the best I've ever witnessed in baseball. It has been an amazing awesome story that doesn't have an ending yet. From what they have done so far, I would imagine that would bring out the "closet" fans (those turned off after 97) next year. Thoughts?

I could really care less what Cubs fans "think" that the rest of the country feel for their team. Cubs fans seem to think the entire world is on their side.

And as far as the Marlins fan base, the truth is there is a very loyal, very knowledgeble core of around 12-15 thousand fans. I count myself among them, usually attending about 20-25 games per year. That's not a lot of fans obviously, but you have to give a franchise some time to grow & earn their fan support. I mean we've been around for a decade, yet we're blamed for being way behind the Cubs and Yankees and Cardinals in fan support. Hoo-kay.

 

This team has gone through a lot in a very short existance. The Rockies or Diamondbacks haven't had anywhere near the problems we have. Give it some time for christ sakes...

That would be an accomplishment if Wrigley was filled with rabid diehards year-in-year-out. However, the majority of "fans" at Wrigley aren't there for the baseball game. They're there for atmosphere, beer, BS-ing, and because the National Media tells people that baseball at Wrigley is the trendy thing to do. Baseball to most of CubDumb is an afterthought.

 

Case in point..... Sox/Cubs interleague game..... 2001..... ShamME hits a HR..... all of Wrigley wearing sCrUB blue going nuts including a girl in front of me..... and she turns to a Sox fan and asks, "What just happened?"

It will take quite a bit more winning before we can expect that kind of attendance for games against the likes of Montreal, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, etc. (IMO). To put up numbers like that you need a season ticket base of 20K+. We are a long way from that.

 

I do, however, expect there to be a gradual increase in the attendance if the current ownership continues to lead this team in the right direction. I seriously doubt we'll see the type of increase that we got from last year to this, but I do anticipate the numbers to continue to grow. Season tickets are the key. I remember reading in an article (last week or so) that teams like St. Louis, SF, Chicago, etc all have season ticket bases in excess of 25K. That can do wonders for the reported attendance of a game, no matter who the opponent is.

 

Also, this region is VERY fickle, and often times short sighted, and I expect to hear a ton of complaints this winter when some of the established player are not retained. People seem to have a difficult time accepting the realities of the team's financial situation.

MARLIN FANS. Make SIGNS that are BIG, and EASY TO READ.

Make them say The REAL Americas Team or AMERICAS TEAM vs. MEDIAS TEAM. which one is owned by the Media? heh heh.

there should be an increase in season tickets next year, you're right that they'll take a media hit from losing a couple of these players, but if they can continue to win & put a good product out there, they'll be ok. a lot of it hangs on the stadium issue too....
