They are not playing well during Spring Training games. We are not pitching, hitting or scoring runs. I know we are in spring training games, but could this carry on into the season?????

I'm not worrying, because I expect this team to finish below .500.

With that said, we have a lot of talent and we should play a lot better during the regular season.

The fact of the matter is that teams that do very very poorly during spring training don't make it to the postseason. Rob Neyer wrote an article on this a few years ago.

I think this team has a shot to make the playoffs if the sophomores don't regress overall. If that happens they're at about 83-86 wins right now. If we make trades mid-season for a center fielder and some relievers I think we have a shot of making the playoffs.

and last year we won ST and came flying out of the gates too... oh wait

I'll be worried if in the last 3 or 4 games of ST we are being shutout

True, but a very bad spring training usually means no playoffs. Likewise, a very good spring training means you won't be terrible (lose 95+ games).

I don't get worried until the regular guys are getting 4 AB's and the pitchers are going 6 innings.

There are some eye-raisers (Hermida and Boone), but it is only the first full week of March.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but didn't the '98 Marlins have a gang-buster spring?

During both world championship years didn't the Marlins tear up spring training? I'm pretty sure in 1997 they did, but I can't really remember 2003...

2003 they were under .500

I don't worry about it. It is also a time when pitchers try to work on new pitches, or a pitch they have trouble controlling. Batters that usually pull, will try to work on hitting in the opposite direction. You also have a lot of inexperienced players getting more playing time than veterans.

So don't worry about.

If the Marlins are still playing like this in a week I WOULD be worried IF I thought this team was a 90 game winner.

But it's not.

Not with Helms gone, and JJ hurting. Right now it's a miracle if this team wins 85 games.

In summary, no I am not worried because:

A) The first 2 weeks of ST mean didly squat and

B) This team isn't that good to begin with

This team has the nucleus of a winner, but we lack the depth of a true contender in both the bullpen and the bench.

Good, I am glad someone started this thread. Having the opportunity to watch only a handful of games since 2005, I hardly know the players except Dontrelle and Miguel. I'm still trying to get to know the players! Haven't heard of most of them! :peepwall

But didn't the Royals had 1 of the best ST record last season next to Marlins but still manage to get 100 L.

Spring training are like practice games if your good it doesnt count and if your bad it doesnt count in the end spring training doesnt determain how good or bad a team will be in the regular season.

At least I'm not the only one who remembers.

ST games don't count. And the "Marlins" playing a lot of these games aren't going to be on the 25-man roster. ST doesn't decide the playoffs. That's what the regular season is for.

i think we had the best record in the grapefruit league in 1997.
