Should we be worried about the Marlins closer?

Featured Replies

Ladies and gentlemen, Fredo made a mistake today but not assessing his pitcher very well.

What if the manager today had been Girardi and he put in Julio? Who would you be crucifying now?

Girardi. they'd be grilling any manager, not just Fredi or Joe.

Fredi did not make a mistake. Julio is the closer. Whether you like it or not it's Julio's job to close games. If he fails too often then the job should go to someone else. But he must be given the opportunity to begin with. A few more games like this one early in the season will result in a demotion.

Let's give it a break. The most important thing right now is seeing how he responds in his next save opportunity.

If he comes back a couple of times and sucks then we really have to start thinking about our other options at closer. I think this team can be in contention if it has an average or better bullpen along with a good closer. So, we need him to be effective. However, let's see how he responds.

Remember. Everyone fails. It's how you respond to failure that separates the good/great ones from the mediocre ones, in baseball and in life.

Just remember to keep the Godfather theme as your ringtone, because before the season is out, someone's gonna have a horse's head or a dead hooker in his bed. Could be Julio, could be Fredo, could be the entirety of South Florida.

was our closer postion our weakness it still look likely it will be if Julio donot get job done soon

Its not weak. We just don't have the right guy pitching in that spot, to put it lightly.

I hope Julio bounces back quickly. I will be rooting for him to succeed this season. It's very early and perhaps some kinks need to be worked out. We have had a great track record with closers in the past and I do not see how a little work with Julio won't turn his season around to make him a servicable closer.

I hope so too. My problem is not so much with Julio as a closer, as much as it is him being the closer right now.

With his track record and rough spring, I would have rather seen him start off in a set-up role and earn the closer spot rather than be given it.

After today's game YES, we are in trouble.

While we are at it, maybe they should send Gonzalez for a brain scan and eye exam, we need to find out if his eyes are OK and his brain can react quick enough, to see when his pitchers are in trouble. Been a long time since I have seen any team with that bad management, in the 9th inning.

Those of you who want Julio to be pulled out of the closer's role are in for a long and bumpy ride. Beinfest brought in Julio, a guy who he has reportedly been eyeing for years, to be our closer. Fredi is not about to countermand this. The Marlins have also made a substantial investment in Julio ? $2.5 million and Yusmeiro Petit. Beinfest is going to want a return on that investment in either production on the field with the Marlins or through a trade later on in the season.

Julio only has value as a closer. So he is going to get many more opportunities to blow games before Beinfest decides he is a total loss. And it is way too early to declare him a total loss, but you have to be worried after today's performance.

The first couple of batters he faced were the #8 hitter and a pinch hitter on possibly the worst team in the league. He was pitching in front of a sparse crowd in a pitcher's park. But he just couldn't hack it. He was all over the place. Those balls that weren't thrown in the dirt were getting hit. On more than one pitch Olivo blocked a possible wild pitch with the winning run standing on third base. It was just ugly.

One last thing ? if he is removed from the closer's role he will probably become a malcontent. He thinks that he is by right a closer, that is his role, and he will accept nothing less than that. He said as much when he was traded to the Marlins. Though it probably wouldn't matter at that point because he is going to have to have a number of outings like this ? how many I do not know ? before Beinfest decides he made a mistake bringing him in and he'll probably just be cut.

I'll hope that Julio proves to be a strong closer from here on out, but I have my doubts.

If there is one thing I never agreed with about the Julio move was naming him the closer right away. He should have had some competition for the job. Unfortunately this is the Marlins, who are cheap and will not sign a 3 million dollar player to pitch in the setup role. Sadly, Fredi's hands are probably tied b/c of the lock and chain Loria probably has strapped to his ankle.

That's definitely something most of us can agree on

I don't agree with you often, but I do today. He has to blow a few more saves before he can be demoted. He looked very nervous today. Lets see how he does next time. We'll all be watching and holding our breath!

One closing attempt, don't sweat it.

really? i don't often say controversial things. :)

Give Julio a break... even Todd Jones blew his first save for us... and he saved what? 40? Give him a chance the Marlins are good at picking out bargain closers. So stop whining and wait!

It's much much too early to say we have "closer problems," however, I am disconcerted that Jorge Julio is our 3rd or 4th highest paid player (I can't remember which)

Yeah, that's a little... odd.

Two words: Guillermo Mota.

Yeah, that's a little... odd.

Yeah, but it is what it is because of the service time contracts that MLB has set up.

Anyway, as for the "closer problems" I don't think we have them at all. What I think we have is a poorly arranged bullpen. By my count, we have 3 guys (Owens, Tank, Lindstrom) capable of exceeding the job that Julio is doing and at least two others (Messenger, Pinto) capable of matching the production.

It's like batting De Aza 3rd and Miggy 6th. There aren't "lineup problems" per se, but there are serious organizational issues.
