The Marlins have to hope nobody regresses this year.

That Julio has a lights out year.

That the warts the Braves, Phillies and Mets have truly end up screwing them in the end.

As much as we all want the Marlins to do it this year, there is just too many obstacles in our way.

We know we have Miguel. Hammer and Shadez while we all think they will continue to do it, have only had one full year of MLB experience. I would feel a lot more comfortable about them if they had 2 full years under their belt of good performance.

Jacobs we hope he is fully healthy and can show it all to us.

Hermidia...???? Can he actually reach his potential?

Uggla, most say he is due for a regression, same thing with Hammer and Shadez applies to him.

Has Olivo really turned into an everyday catcher?

Then you look at the pitching, I think Olsen is the real deal. I'm not so sure about Anibal, who doesnt even have a full year under his belt, although I think he does turn out to be at worst a middle of the rotation guy, still really too early to tell.

Dontrelle is on this odd, on and off career path. Luckily this is an on year due to his career progression to this point. The bullpen, well, the bullpen is a game of who the hell really knows.

And we have a rookie MLB manager.

If all those cards turn in our favor, we can win the division.

What are the odds of that happening now?

Find a disgruntled about to become free agent slugger who can bat fifth (yeah, yeah I know but he asked) behind Cabrera and selfishly bang the sh*t out of the ball while counting the minutes until free agency and a Brink's truck unloading in his driveway.

I think the key is Jeremy Hermida. If he can come back and be the player so many believe he will become, we will have a great chance.

I am not worried about the starting rotation. If injuries happen, so be it.

The bullpen will be fine, even if Julio closes for the first 2 months

*even if I think that ultimately, 2008 is our year

If all those cards turn in our favor, we can win the division.

I'd be more than happy with a wild card spot. Even if we lose out early on in the playoffs, this year will be a success if we make the playoffs at all. The key? No injuries.

the east isnt strong enough to get 2 playoff teams.

Jeremy Hermida is the key, enough said. If he can begin to live up to his potential we'll have a real solid lineup. Right now the lineup is average to below average. I'd love to see the day where we can slot Hermida into that #2 slot and move Uggla into the middle of the lineup.

Also, I think it's important that if we're in it near the trade deadline and that Beinfest goes out and makes a move to really improve the team, whether it be a CFer, reliever, or to fill a hole that opened up due to injury. Show some faith in these guys that they can get the job done and show that the FO will do what it takes to help them do it.

Ehhhh, I dunno. The Phillies have added on nicely this offseason with Helms and Alfonseca as examples. Their lineup is scary. There's no way in hell they're stronger than New York but I think they will definitely at least be a strong contender for the NL wild card.

I'll get back on topic now.

The Phillies only have 4 starters right now and that bullpen is scary and not in a good way.

The Mets have no starting pitching.

The Braves starting pitching after the Smoltz and Hudson is scary, though I think James is going to be good.

I wouldnt call either of those teams locks for anything.

The Phillies only have 4 starters right now and that bullpen is scary and not in a good way.

Freddy Garcia is their fifth starter.

The Mets have no starting pitching.

Glavine's coming off a good year, Maine won 10 of his last 12 last year, Perez had an excellent spring and after the All-Star break, Pelfrey will be a consistent winner.

I think the Braves finish next to last in this division again this year. I agree about James, though. And I think Franceour will have a 20 HR, .300-.320 season.

the single most important factor for the marlins to make the post season?

Hanley Ramirez. As Hanley goes, we go.

To win the world series? - hermida needs to turn into the all-star we all hoped he would be.

Freddy Garcia is hurt right now I think.

Perez had a couple of good games late in the year. The rest of the year was utter garbage. Look at his numbers. Pelfrey hasnt done anything yet in this league. Maine has 8 career big league wins, how could he have won 10 of his last 12?

The Braves by far have the best bullpen in the division.

Yeah, you're right about Garcia. They put him on the 15 day but they say unless it (his bicep tendanitits) gets worse he should be ready for his first start.

The Mets as a team won 10 of Maine's last 12 starts last season. Sorry, I worded that wrong.

Single most important thing:

No major injuries to key players.

Unfortunately, that still won't get us in the playoffs in 2007.

Win 2 games out of every 3 game series.

That easy mental picture should help them keep it easy and loose.

They need to take it a game, an innning, a pitch at a time.

I think you hit the nail on the head here...and it's something that so many fans just take for granted. Not only do we refuse to consider regression for any of our young guys that surprisingly performed so admirably last year, too often we automatically assume there will be a natural progression. In short, if nobody regresses, we are going to contend. That gives us a very, very good starting staff, and a pretty well rounded lineup. If we get anything from some of the question marks (i.e. Hermida, Mtire, bullpen, CF), then we would be a very good team.

Ah, but we must face reality. It will be nearly impossible for our starters to replicate their success from last year, and ditto for our young hitters. I'm not saying that we were lucky, but one miraculous season does not necessarily guarantee a second one. I think we have a supremely talented team, but just too young to expect anything close to last season.

Owens/Lindstrom/Julio pitch like they can/should.

...not too many of your players don't go into sophomore slump. with a team full of young stars, i suspect at least one of them will be slumping.

Our bats will be fine. The pitching in the NL isn't good enough to hold us to under 4 runs a game.

If our rotation stays healthy as well as our key position players (Miggy, Hanley), we might be there in September.
