De Aza - out with a sore ankle

Featured Replies

Rookie center fielder Alejandro De Aza didn't play the main game and was questionable for Friday. "He's been hobbling around with a (sore) ankle,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It got too bad where he couldn't play. We're going to reevaluate it Friday but I don't see any problems.

Lovely.

You could tell he was walking funny....looked like it happened in that rain delay nightmare night.

If he went on the DL, who would be called up? would they recall Gardner, or would they stay with a position player?

I would assume a position player, probably Reed because I don't think they are close to bringing Abercrombie back yet. With Hanley hobbling, Amezaga is needed at short and that leaves us short on OFers.

I was surprised to see them start Ross in CF last night if they are confident in him they might just recall a hitter not a CF guy if De Aza went on the DL.

Please no. Ross just doesn't look competent against righthanded pitching right now and his Cf play leaves a little to be desired.

Unless De Aza is seriously hurt, for De Aza to go on the DL is what fifteen days and it doesn't sound like that kind of injury.

If Ramirez is okay by friday he goes back to SS and Amezega goes out to CF.

Geez, I hope that ankle feels better soon. It's hard to believe I'm saying this so early but this kid's a big contributor.

they'd probably recall Reggie (options?)...because Reed is out of them I'm pretty sure.

I thought options only mattered if you were sending someone down, and I thought they counted for the entire year anyway. If not we would have already been forced to released Reed.

Probably Cody Ross gets a start and Saturday De Aza may again be back in the lineup. They are gonna treat De Aza with kidgloves as well as they should be, he is way too valuable to lose for an extended period of time

Sounds like the plan I'd have. I have no idea why Hanley wouldn't be in tonight...

De Aza day-to-day: For the second straight game, rookie center fielder Alejandro De Aza is out with a sore ankle.

Gonzalez said De Aza actually rolled his ankle during the first series of the season in Washington. He's been playing with some discomfort and initially didn't tell the team.

"He kind of rolled it over in Washington and it got continuously worse," Gonzalez said. "He's a young kid who wants to play. But we taught a lesson to him. 'You want to play, and we want you to play. But you've got to help these guys [trainers] help you.' That happens. Guys want to play and they don't want to talk."

De Aza is riding an eight-game hitting streak, which matches the club record for the longest consecutive string by a rookie to open the season. Ramirez hit safely in eight straight in 2006.

Gonzalez didn't rule out a possible stint on the disabled list for De Aza, but as of now, the club believes the ankle should heal with proper rest and treatment. He remains day-to-day.
