First arrest made under new film pirating law

Featured Replies

Deciding not to go to the movies because they charge a lot of money is all fine and dandy but doesnt really have anything to do with pirating movies.

With that said I agree that the price of movie tickets (and even worse, popcorn/soda etc) is outrageous.

But it still doesnt make it right to illegally profit from new releases such as this guy did.

Chances are its just posted on irc and torrents around the world for free distribution.

So we'll finally see the end of in theater tapes and a full move to torrent. Good job!

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't gone to the movies since Stargate with Kurt Russell was out.

These days I watch a good portion of my movies online...for free. And yes, they are the same bootleg versions that the guy in this story got arrested for.

I don't tape 'em, but i sure as hell will watch 'em ;)

Past that, I go to blockbuster :)

I don't go to the movies for two reasons - 1. I can't stand people. Arrogant, ignorant pukes and thug wannabe's. Why bother when I can stay home and enjoy the movie with my family. And 2. The prices are RIDICULOUS. The cost of a night at the movies for a family of 4 - $40 for tickects, $8.00 for 2 large popcorns, $12 for 4 soft drinks and $6.00 for 2 boxes of candy (1 foe each child).

No way I would even consider spending $50-$60 dollars for a night at the movies.

Especially when we can rent any movie we want, not have to deal with people and enjoy time with my family in the comfort of our on living room.

I'm right there with you, MC24. I went to see POTC 3 and Harry Potter OOTP because I had free movie tickets. Also- I thought these movies needed to be seen on a big screen. We went on a Monday afternoon (early evening) for both shows. Between the unsupervised kids kicking the chairs in front of them to the teenagers answering and talking on their cell phones during the movie, it really turned off the entire experience for me. I have said comments in the past to parents of kids who speak and kick chairs and all it gets me is a confrontation by the stupid ass parents.

We have a 48" telly in the living room and it's big enough for me. I can wait until 300 comes out on digital cable or DVD. I refuse to pay $ 9.00 for an afternoon show - God only knows what it is for an evening show- and then have to deal with obnoxious people to boot.

And for those who say, why didn't you just tell the manager.... First, you miss a good 20-30 minutes waiting to speak to a manager (who is about 19 years old anyway) and then, they placate you by giving you free tickets for the next show. They never come in and ask the people to put away their cell phones or such. They don't want to get their ass kicked any more than I do.

Honestly, the price of movies tickets isnt THAT bad. Its only like $6.50 at Sunset Place, which I think is a good value.

The whole ripoff is food. I never really realized it until I worked at AMC, but those prices are pure robbery...though you could, as Fox said, just not eat that garbage. And about dealing with a**holes in the crowd, I guess Im either lucky about that or just never notice it. The only movie in the last few years Ive gone to where the crowd was noticeable was Spider-Man 3, and in that case the crowd making noise was probably the best part of the movie.

Cobb Cinemas in Pembroke Pines/Davie/Weston are:

Adult $9.00 Child $6.00

Muvico:

Adult $ 9.75

Child $ 6.25

Outrageous. And I have to sit through 10 minutes of previews that I'm not interested in.

up here in massachusetts...most of theatres are 10.50 -11 bucks for nights and 6.50-7.25 for matinees...which is still ridiculous...no wonder i always sneak a soda and food in with me

I disagree about the previews. Its gotten wayy too long because of the block of advertisements that come before them now, but I like the movie trailers themselves.

And Ill say it again...I dont see whats so outrageous about paying 6 bucks to catch a movie.

I don't even think 10 dollars is that big of a deal.

No one is forcing you, don't go if it is 'too much'.

Some of us on this board have families. Ten bucks for yourself isn't all that bad, but when you are going as a family, 4 people + snacks - or even without snacks is a lot. But remember, this is compared to seeing it on tv or cable/direct tv for $ 3.99. I'll sit back and wait the few months it takes to get to my lil tv.

I have better things to do with $40 than to go to the movies.

Like purchasing LimeWire Pro.... :mischief

Heck, you'd still have $21.12 left.

Why would you purchase LimeWire Pro when you can get it on LimeWire for free? :mischief

You made my point for me.

I honestly only go to the movies now if I'm going with friends of mine or on a date.

I will say the best movie experience I've ever had was Snakes on a Plane with 10 friends of mine and a 20 others of the same mind yelling and screaming and clapping and laughing.

Definitely. That movie is crap unless you've got a room full of people who only want to see crazy snakes and sh*t.

To be completely honest, I filmed the HP4 at the drive in theathers last year. I didn't sell it, just re-watched it at home. I saw the movie in theaters 3 times......they're not losing in revenue by me watching it at home after going to the theaters. I was obsessed with that movie, watched it every day after school.......and I bought the DVD the day it came out.

I think the point is that most movies that are posted on torrent sites are done without the though of illegally profiting from it. The groups that do release the movies do not make money on it, they do it just to do it. But there are also people that will try to profit from it. Someone at my local 7-11 stands out front and sells pirated movies and music for about $5 a piece.

I quit going to the movies before I quit smoking because I couldn't pause the damn thing to smoke a cigarette. Now that I have quit, I went back to the theaters recently to see a movie and WTF?!?!?!? They have commercials???? When did this happen? I spend $80 to go see a movie with the family and I have to sit through advertisements? I think I'll just download them. Now if they develop a way that I can watch newly released movies and pay for them at the same time, then I will pay for the service to watch it at my house. But until then I will continue to download them and make homemade nachos for the kids instead of paying a fortune for them at the theater.

i just started going to the movies again - was originally prohibited by cost and lack of movies of interest

AMC charges $5 per ticket for weekend shows that start before noon - i'll usually either buy a soda or bring one in - then if I feel like it do lunch out after the show or just go home and make lunch

went to the theater like 4 straight weeks this year - first time in a long time i've done that - early shows are great - decent crowd, at a new theater and price isn't bad
