The Bank Thread

My main bank, SunTrust, seems to be ready to be eaten up by some bigger bank (CitiBank?) and I'm not too pleased about it. I already have HSBC for savings (5.05% interest rules) and don't want another big northern bank.

I guess the options out there are...

Bank of America (fees galore, but my parents seem happy enough with them and their ATM network)

Regions (just bought out AmSouth and they seem to have ATMs everywhere I go)

Wachovia (heard raving and ranting....good and bad...but Philly is south enough for me to be satisfied and they have a ton of ATMs)

I would still keep SunTrust (or whatever they become) for my FSUCard account unless FSU scraps those plans and signs with someone else.

Any comments, concerns, suggestions, rants, raves, etc?

I'm with Regions. Have a checking and savings account there. I also have a fantastic savings account with HSBC like you do as well. Gotta love the interest rate.

I've always stayed away from Bank of America. They absolutely raped me when I was in college with fees up the wazoo.

Personally I've had nothing but good experiences with Regions and more locations seem to be popping up daily.

First Bank of Nebraska- Omaha has 6% savings accounts.

From what I have heard, Citi isnt that horrible a bank.

I know nothing about Regions and have never dealt with Wachovia.

Bank of America is really good for internet banking; not sure of their fee structures.

My checking account is with a local credit union and as long as I have 500 bucks in my account I get charged a grand total of zero fees.

Out of the options...I'd go with Bank of America if you can find an account with miminal fees and all the internet features.

I have noticed, but haven't heard of them before. I know of HSBC back to the Marine Midland days.

I havent had a problem with them in any way, other than them taking generally an extra day longer than hsbc in funds transfers, which for me at least isnt a big deal.

Bank of America sucks.

Their security is lax, I actually had to go through several steps to have a credit card that was lost cancelled when it should have been a quick painless procedure.

cool.

glad to know so i wont actually use them for anything but the one credit card i currently have that they acquired.

I have nothing to back this up, and if someone could enlighten me I'd appreciate it but would I be wrong in thinking that local banks run you a lesser risk of identity theft then the major banks?

I'd think you'd be less of a target.

I chose BoA because of the abundance of their talking ATMs but that has proven to be a poor choice. When I get married, my entire banking and such is going to have an overhaul. Long overdue.

Tallahassee has a mighty mouse bank in Capital City Bank which has had issues with people trying to steal identities of their customers and pass fake checks...all caught....but I think any bank is as big a target and the same goes for all customers.

I have no clue on that Fox.

You may have a point. If I ever were to switch, I'm going with USAA for my checking, simply because I have heard absolutely nothing but great things for them and being a Bexar County resident I dont have to be military to get into it...for those of you with that option I would strongly consider them.

I use Wachovia since it's the main bank for UF students, but it has excellent customer service and a very fancy branch in Coral Springs that I use. I don't pay any fees but the interest rate is crap (not that I care).

Same here at UNC, Wachovia is almost the mandatory choice. Besides them, only BoA has a branch anywhere near campus, and Wachovia has ATMs on every part of the campus.

If I still lived in Miami though, I think Id go with Regions Bank. They have plenty of branches here and usually have lesser wait times inside.

I would have thought a bigger bank was safer because you have a smaller chance of being picked from a group AND you would think a bigger bank would be more up-to-date on security technology.

That's a good point but I was thinking more along the lines of big-time online theft. Whether it be encryption cracking, phishing, etc.

When I think about a big-time hacker project it's just my intuition that the big banks, although probably more secured, are going to be targeted more then Mom & Pop bank.

I think when I switch next month I'm going to go the smaller bank route. Even if I can't have high-quality online banking. I think the online banking makes me lazy anyways as I don't look at the numbers as much if I were keeping the books myself.

The nice thing about FSU's SunTrust relationship is we can have the financial aid (scholarship/Bright Futures money) direct deposited into the FSUCard accounts and the wait is minimal. SunTrust also has a branch in the parking garage I use the most along with the Downtown Branch on Monroe Street.

You can use any other bank, but they mail you a check in those cases which causes delays.

SunTrust has the most ATMs on campus (I believe 5...2 at the branch, 1 at Doak, 1 at Diffenbaugh, & 1 outside Rovetta) while Bank of America, Regions, Wachovia, & FSU Credit Union all maintain ATMs for their customers on campus at the Olgesby Student Union which is across the street from the SunTrust Branch/ATMs in the Woodward Garage. Bank of America also has ATMs at the Bill's Bookstores on the edge of campus which are convenient too. All of these banks maintain Downtown Tally branches and have branches all over town. The FSU Credit Union is backed by the FSU Boosters but really has no other official connection to FSU other than they are on campus with their office.

I know that Bank of America has been hacked and the things my parents have to do to login is crazy compared to SunTrust. HSBC is the worst, you need the two letters they send you with your User ID (on Letter 1) and Password (on Letter 2)...both about 25 characters long....then you have to create a password you enter using a keyboard on screen you click on.

HSBC does give you an ole ATM card (Cirrus) which is nice for an online bank, but I would prefer one of their MasterCard Check Cards.

My features when looking for a bank:

1) Fee structure (aka FREE)

2) ATM network

3) Online Presence

4) Branch/Office network

5) Phone Presence

6) Product offered (VISA Check Cards vs. plain ole ATM cards)

i have been very satisified with them so far and they have a couple branches right around where i work. though i do wish they would add another one closer to where i live. the online banking has been great for me and i really love it.

I've been singing the praises of pcbanker.com for quite some time now. I have had GREAT luck with them and I have a better interest rate [4%] on my checking than most people have on their savings. They have free checking and no foreign ATM fees. I've been using their automatic bill pay for 4 or 5 years now and have never had an issue. I think I write maybe 3 checks per year. They are also super secure and will mail you an RSA key to add to your password and log in credentials.

ING Direct is offering 4% interest on checking with a $1 minimum to open. They also have no foreign ATM fees.
