August 2, 200719 yr My dog Cassie who's a little over 16 got pretty sick a few weeks ago before I left for Europe. She stopped eating had uncontrollable diarrhea. I mean yea she would poop every now and then in the house but this was like every hour. When we came back from Europe (she was with the vet the whole time) she got a little better but after a day or so the diarrhea came back and there was blood in it. For the last few weeks she's been locked in the kitchen because that's one of the only rooms with tile in it, so it was easy to clean up after her. She has stopped eating her food, whether it be the stuff the vet told her to eat, her usual dog food. Last night we made her a filet mignon as her last meal. She only took a few bites of it but thats ok. Today we're taking her to the vet and she is going to be put down. I had a feeling this day was coming and actually said my long goodbye to her a few days ago. Anyway, I've never had anyone this close to me die before. My dad's parents died but I didn't really know either of them (his mom had alheimer's so the last 5 years of her life we didn't see her much). I've been with my dog since I was 8 years old. I'm pretty much a wreck today but for those who never saw a pic of her, I'll link it below. I'd post it but I don't want to open this thread all day and keep seeing her face. :crying http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL173/21319...1/109610231.jpg
August 2, 200719 yr Really sorry to hear that Ramp. I've had my dog since I was 6, she's now 15, and I get depressed just thinking about her time coming. Seriously like losing a childhood friend. RIP
August 2, 200719 yr Sorry to hear. We had to put my dog down a few years ago (we had her for 13 years). It sucks.
August 2, 200719 yr It's a tuff thing to go through. A dog truly becomes part of the family. I am sure that dog had a great life and you took care of it the right way and was never abused unlike some people we hear about in todays world (Michael you should go to jail Vick). I am sorry for your loss. Now your going to have to have a Cassie the II
August 2, 200719 yr I feel for you Ramp. They don't call dog's "Man's best friend" for nothing. One of the crappy things about dogs is that they don't live that long. Sounds like your pooch had 16 good years, giving and receiving love. Putting down a sick dog is rough. My neighbor, a marine for over 20 years, recently had to put down his 16 year old dog. He said it was the toughest thing he'd ever had to go through. He was a wreck for a couple of weeks. But time heels, or dulls, the pain. Remember the good times.
August 2, 200719 yr My neighbor, a marine for over 20 years, recently had to put down his 16 year old dog. He said it was the toughest thing he'd ever had to go through. He was a wreck for a couple of weeks. Story my grandma told me about my grandpa (Who was in the army, fought in Vietnam)...he didn't cry when either of his parents died, but sobbed hard when his 15yo dog died. Dogs are amazing companions.
August 2, 200719 yr sorry to hear about that ramp, ive had my dog for almost 13 years (in november) and even though it like it used to be im still dreading the day she goes.
August 2, 200719 yr That sucks dude. I'm sorry to hear that. Reason63 is right. You got to go get a new puppy. Of course, it won't completely heal the loss but it'll certainly help. And you'll have a chance to start something special again.
August 2, 200719 yr Sorry to hear that Ramp, looks like an awesome dog. Our family dog, Suzie, died late last year after 17 years. It's not easy losing such a good canine friend.
August 2, 200719 yr That's horrible Ramp. I've had my dog since I was eight years old too, and her name is also Cassie...I agree with a few of the posts above..go get another dog after about a week. The puppy love you'll receive will help.
August 2, 200719 yr Hang in there Ramp....I know i'm approaching that too as my dog just turned 16. I keep thinkin every time i go home that he won't be there.
August 2, 200719 yr Ramp, Your post got me teary-eyed. I think one of the best ways to cope with the passing of an animal (or anyone else for that matter) is to reminisce about all the good times you had with her. We had to put our dog down about 4 years ago, and we still enjoy talking about all the funny things he used to do.
August 2, 200719 yr Sorry to hear that, Ramp. I lost my dog earlier this summer. He wasn't quite as old as your dog but he was a part of the family. Always tough to lose a dog, especially one with that much longevity. At least you said your goodbyes as there is not much else you can do.
August 2, 200719 yr So sorry to hear Rampo. I've been through two doggy deaths and they are rough. Both my dogs lived very long lives. I was very young when both passed and I had a hard time dealing with it. Stay strong brotha.
August 2, 200719 yr I was going to try to cheer you up with a joke about how the Korean butcher pays by the pound, but I felt like it might be in bad taste [no pun intended]. I don't know what I'm going to do when/if that day comes for my dog. :| Be strong, brother.
August 2, 200719 yr Ramp, I am very sorry for your loss. I am sure you know this, but you are doing the right thing. Losing a pet, especially a dog, is like losing a family member. We've all mostly grown up with dogs and most of us have lost them by now, so be thankful you have had her around til now.
August 2, 200719 yr We've had to put 4 down so far. All lived long and very contented lives. They were all well cared for and loved beyond reason. The only people I cried for like my dogs was my mom when she passed away in 1995. We still have the remains of our two last dogs with us. We put their tags and their names and dates into their boxes and have them put in a place in our house that only we know about. But they're with us always. Save the pics and talk about your friend a lot. It helps with the grief.
August 2, 200719 yr Sorry for your loss. It's always a tough thing. I have had two family dogs die, one was an 8 year old Doberman who was in great shape, healthy, playful...everything. Best dog ever and one night he got a twisted stomach and died. It was awful. So unexpected. Another was a little small terrier, lived to be 15-16 years old like your dog, had cancer...we knew it was coming because she was sick for a long time, but we got to be with her and pet her and make her last days comfortable. My point is: While it is still very hard, it makes it somewhat easier when they are older and have lived a great life and you can be with them in their last days, know it is coming and make them feel comfortable. Still sad though. I still get sad thinking about my Dobey who died 10 years ago.
August 2, 200719 yr Shooting cats that have been ran over is just disgusting. My dad had to shoot one that was run over once and the buckshot didn't kill it, so dad had to stomp it (I'm to much of a wuss to do that).
August 2, 200719 yr I am sorry. I also had a dog named Cassie (she was put to sleep a few months ago) who was 16.
