Fredi's managerial style.... in quotes!

Featured Replies

Despite a string of seven losses in eight games, Gonzalez hasn't diverted much from the even keel public persona he's displayed all season. He said he's sometimes more fiery in private.

"The stuff that I can control as a manager is that these guys come out and work and play the game like it's supposed to be played, play it hard," Gonzalez said. "I have not seen them not do that. They're allowed to screw up every once in a while. If I see those things that I'm looking for -- guys playing hard, taking out double plays, running out bases on a fly ball, what can you do? I'm not going to do a tantrum or berate them in the media for that kind of stuff."

and it has nothing to do with criticizing the team to the media. it's criticizing the team to the team. i don't want him to tell reporters that hermida sucked in the field one night. i want him to tell hermida that hermida sucked in the field. he's not supposed to be fiery toward the media or have outbursts. so he isn't. he is supposed to be like that toward the team. and i loooove that double negative. you know swift has it exact. once he put the 2nd "not" in there, i bet he had no idea where the sentence was going.

I swear some of you are hilarious.

You have no clue what Fredi says to Hermida in private, you have no clue what he says to anyone. All you do is base things off what is said in the media.

I've maintained my position that I want him to call a spade a spade. He can't tell someone one thing and then tell someone else something different. Consistency is all I ask for. The media, beat writers, they're part of this traveling family. Them and the players (at least some of the players) develop a relationship. If Fredi's lambasting the team behind closed doors and telling the media all's rosey (which this quote indicates to me) he's setting himself up for real credibility issues down the road.

That's it, I just hate seeing a team undermine itself.

How so?

If I were on a high profile case and I messed up a bit and my boss said everything was cool publicly but told me privately that I need to fix some things he would not lose any credibility with me. In fact, I would think he's a jerk for blasting me publicly.

:thumbup

I think there is a difference between:

a) "lambasting" the team behind closed doors (which I doubt he is doing) and telling the media "everything's all rosey"; and

b) individually talking to players behind closed doors for some of their inexcusable gaffes (which I have no doubt he has done) and refusing to call that player out in the media.

The coach may lose credibility for (a) but, if anything, he'll build up credibility with the members of the team for (b). I have no doubt he's spoken to Hermida about his fielding errors, Hanley's early baserunning gaffes, etc. There is no point in bringing those things up to the media, unless you're trying to light a fire under that person if they are not putting in the necessary effort. However, I don't think our team is failing because of lack of effort. To a certain extent, our younger players have seemingly improved over the course of the season, and (although I have many friends who would disagree vehemently) the bullpen has been effectively managed. There really isn't much else Fredi can do. He's far from "manager of the year," but he didn't lose this season for us.

I'm sure your co-workers would love the mixed signals, and I'm sure there'd be hard feelings if they did the same thing and felt the boot come down on them.

It has little to do with what he actually says; IMO it's more his demeanor. Unless we are to assume he has a Jekyll/Hyde personality, I think it's fair to wonder whether his lassez-faire attitude is hurting the team.

Bad example with co-workers.

People in the clubhouse either hear Fredi berating a player, or see him go into Fredi's office. So they know he's berating them.

I have virtually no problems with the way Fredi is handling discipline and the media (aside from Scott Olsen when he should have spoken out against his behavior, but who knows he could have been given a gag order from the front office). He has no starting pitching to speak of, the team has been riddled with injuries, but people want blame the team's woes on Fredi not publicly embarrassing his players? I think Fredi understands that publicly bashing a player is a valid motivational tool, but one that should be used infrequently (such as in the case of Olsen :whistle ). Publicly humiliating a player over a misplayed ball when the team has virtually no chance to contend due to injuries, would be a waste of that tool and a betrayal of the trust his players have in him. His players know that privately he may be disappointed in some of their play, but publicly he supports them. In my mind, that goes a long way in developing trust and might help a player "buy in" to the system.

Fredi is "effectively managing the bullpen"?

Thats cute.

The 2007 bullpen is FLAT OUT more talented.

End of story.

In my opinion Fredi needs to light a fire on his own ass. He is a nice guy and everything but he is not an inspirational leader or shown the ability to extract the most from his players, nor has he been a keen stratergist. He is just Meh

Im surprised Fredi didn't slap himself on the butt and say "attaboy" after finishing that

So, he's not "effectively managing the bullpen"? I don't get your post. Who said this year's bullpen was less talented? Why is there any comparison to last year's bullpen at all??? All things being considered, Fredi has roles for pretty much everyone (non-existent at the beginning of the season), and has pulled the right strings (more often than not) with the guys with the "undefined" roles, like Pinto, Gardner, Miller (um...Toronto's trash), etc.

Fredi is "effectively mannaging" a much better bullpen in terms of talent. Not sure what is so hard to understand about this.

In a nutshell, its easier to effectively mannage a better bullpen.

Don that was not a comparative statement. It was a comment only on Fredi's performance this year, not his performance relative to last year's bullpen management. Not sure why you're getting your underpants in a knot...

My underpants are actually microfiber and incapable of knotting. :blush

Seriously though, was the bullpen effectively managed tonight?

Because if this was 2006, Girardi gets blamed for Mando's ineffectiveness.

Those things comfortable?

I didn't see tonight's game. I was stuck late at work.
