Ramp,

Why do the MLB.com notes today saying that his return is still "a ways away?"

It says that they are looking for consistent velocity from him. Is he not showing that in his rehab outings?

actually have no clue on the velocity as of this posting but being that he is coming back in the pen, he doesn't need nearly the amount of innings he would need as if he was a starter

so I'm just going by that at this point

nolasco has shown that he can be a solid starting pitcher , we are in desperate need of starting pitching....so logically the marlins wlll bring back Nolasco and make him a relief pitcher :banghead

I think the Marlins have decided to keep him in relief (at least for this season) in the interest of his health, as much as they would like to plug him into the rotation.

The reason given I believe is it would take longer for him to build up arm strength to return as a SP and would limit his time back in the majors before the season ends. This way he can be promoted quicker.

if nolasco is not healthy enough to be a starting pitcher than dont even bother bringing him up , we have enough guys with arms problems on our team.

I concur. Save him for 08, and I would like to see them shut down Rick Vanden Hurk for the rest of the year and have him ready for 08 too.

Ricky is expecting to be activated around Tuesday. He said that Fredi wants him in the pen because if he came back to the rotation he would only have 3-4 starts left in the season. That didn't make much sense to me, but whatever. Ricky said his arm felt the best it has this year in his last start with Jupiter, with velocity around 91-92 and no more pain when following through on his curveball. He's anxious to get back to Miami and play ball, not to mention that the food in Jupiter sucks and the only poker game around is at a dog track.

Shut down Vanden Hurk? Is he hurt?

I agree that Vanden Hurk might be better served by working out some of his issues in the minors (i.e., improving his third pitch, getting his curve over for strikes consistently, etc.). Unfortunately, with Kim having been basically given away, and Nolasco not being considered as a starter for the rest of the season, I'm not sure the team has that luxury. As much as I would like to see Gaby, I'm not sure it would be the wisest thing to rush him, given that he is still very young. Not like they didn't rush Vanden Hurk up. :confused

Apart from really rushing someone up, be it Gaby or even Volstad, I don't know if there are a lot of good options in the minors, better than Vanden Hurk at least.

thought i'd add this great news to the updates: Joe-Bo cleared waivers and is heading back to AAA Albuquerque.

Put the kids in and rest anyone who might remotely get injured. This Fish aren't going anywhere fast this season anyhow.

I'm not sure if that comment is aimed at perticular "kids" but I don't see any reason to start the clock on a guy like Gaby. Let him grow where he is at, don't waste his MLB time on a throw-away season.

That's how I see it. I also don't think RVH should be eating his service time right now. Even Olsen should be in the minors learning how to throw his slider for a strike.

When would you rather have him get acquainted to the major leagues? In a season that matters? Next year is going to be particularly tough knowing that Johnson will be out for most of the time.

Actually

as starter 119.6 IP, 4.96 era, 1.43 whip, 19 HRA, 6.09 K/9, .290 BAA

as reliever 20.3 IP, 3.98 era, 1.27 whip, 1 HRA, 7.96 K/9, .263 BAA

Small sample size. Sure. Youth. Sure. I say leave him, make him our Ryan Madson/Aaron Heilman. Nolasco is a good arm, not a premium one like Anibal, Volstad, Johnson, Olsen, Thompson, etc, which needs to be tried as a starter rather permanently.

For this year let Gaby, and Barone, get some starts, but cut them off at around 160-165 IP for the year (which is close). Don't let Vanden Hurk pitch to much more either. Just let Dontrelle, Olsen, and Mitre power through starts, and if someone like Mildren needs to make a few starts to end the year. So be it. Call me crazy, let Pinto or Gregg spot start here and there too. They can do it. Just need to get through this year as healthy as possible. That's goal # 1 from here on out.

No idea where you got this information from. From everything I have read he is still a ways away from coming back. May not make an appearance at all this year. Consistency in his velocity seems to be the thing. That's from the Marlins web site and from the PBP. I say don't rush things. We are going no where in particular, our pen is doing just fine, we want to see how some of the youngsters can handle MLB hitters and give them some experience at this level. In other words, he's not really needed. So why take any chances?

The food in Jupiter, either at the ball park or the surrounding area, is so far from sucky as to question the rest of this post. Want better poker than at he Palm Beach Kennel Club? It's not exactly a week end trip to Broward for those two casinos. Just because things aren't 10 minutes away dosen't mean you need a passport to go there.
