August 23, 200718 yr This season is a lost season. Let's go for the best draft pick possible. Sit back and enjoy the riducliously poor play, while enjoying the offensive numbers Hanley and Miguel put up. The drive for 2 is on!
August 23, 200718 yr Meh, it's not like we'd pay the money to sign the second best player available in the draft, anyway. Give me respectability. Just to clarify, it's not that I cringe after every loss, or care about winning, but I certainly don't have my eyes on a draft pick as a prize, I've learned my lesson.
August 23, 200718 yr If the draft pick was a harold martinez, id salivate towards that. Hes arod v2. As far as signing picks, its one of the few places Loria isnt completely worthless. He will pay at or above slot. Aside from signing draft picks though, Loria is completely useless.

I know the case of Porcello is/was extremely unique but when you pocket as much as Loria does, they money has to get spent somewhere, right? Hansen made a ton of sense for that '05 team but money broke the deal down, and Teagarden made a ton of sense in the second round, but, again, money superseded organizational need. He signs our draft picks, and that's wonderful, but I think we'd all be singing a tremendously different song if Wieters fell to us and we passed on him. I like us in the middle of the round, we get a good, projectable, affordable player. That said, I hope I eat crow on this. Really I do.

I'm pretty sure Hansen said he wouldn't sign with us. We even offered him a major league deal and he would have been called up right from school.

In baseball being a high draft pick is not an indicator of success, no matter the excellence of the scouting program...Anyone remember Brian Taylor?

It's not the relative slam dunk of drafting high in football and basketball.

Texan, you do know your hit counter for Biggio is out-of-date, right? He's at 3,038. He's 22nd, between Rod Carew (3,053) and Lou Brock (3,023). And I'll be damned... he IS the active hits leader. :thumbup
August 23, 200718 yr Hey, the boys are trying. It's baseball and it happens. Hopefully, we can end this streak and win a few games. Sorry, that was my Freddi impersonation.
August 23, 200718 yr It is just an embarassment to watch them as of late. That's what gets me- I don't mind the losses from here on out, it's obvious we're not going to the playoffs. But we seem to be getting worse as the season wears on. At least give me some progress to hang my hat on for next year.

The only thing left to do is just to be the second worst team in all of baseball, if we screw up the draft, then we screw up the draft and that can be discussed ad naseum later on. Why should i hope we win games at this point, its not going to result in a winning season, its not going to result in us even getting close to respectability at this point. At least this takes away the pain of hoping this team wins and then being upset when they dont do that.

At least this takes away the pain of hoping this team wins and then being upset when they dont do that. Right on. I agree. A guy like Justin Smoak from South Carolina, a smooth, switch hitting, plus defender at 1B could help us out immensely within two years. He will be a top 5 pick, so why not hope for a guy like that when the wins at this point are useless. Let's see what we got in both our Gaby's, Jai Miller, Bret Hayes and maybe even a Volstad(as long as it doesn't mess with the service time rules too much).

I'm pretty sure Hansen said he wouldn't sign with us. We even offered him a major league deal and he would have been called up right from school. He (well, I guess Boras did) said he wouldn't sign with us for the amount we were offering, despite the big league deal. Also, in the case of Hansen, Loria did a big no-no and went right to the client with the offer, cutting the agent out, which pissed Scott off and I'm sure factored into how willing he was to make it work.

In hindsight, can't be that upset over Hansen... obviously not the point though
