Can we have a serious discussion, without flame wars and personal attacks on what direction you think this franchise is going, and where they will be 1 year from now, and what shape we'll be in regards to a stadium deal ?

This franchise needs those young arms in the minors to develop quick. If that happens, on the field this team will be in a good situation.

Off the field, I have no clue. I thought we would have a stadium built by now. Its been 10 years in the making and we are still as far away in getting the stadium today as we were 10 years ago. If a stadium gets built this franchise will be here for a very long time. If a stadium deal isn't in place and the Marlins are still searching a year from now, the Marlins wont be playing in Miami after 2010.

Too many unknown variables right now to actually make a projection. This franchise is at a major crossroad. We will know a lot more in the first few weeks of the offseason

Thanks dude for an intelligent post.

I too am worried the stadium issue will persist into next year. Loria just doesn't seem to be in any hurry. Anyone know what the delays are ?

The FO is trying to get this done as quickly as possible.

$500 million deals do not occur overnight.

Samson on 790 the other day said he didn't care about the "debate" between the OB or downtown site. He just wanted to get the damn thing built already.

They had 10 years to save money. :confused

Where do I think they're headed?

To further obscurity and straight down the crapper. You thought attendance was bad this year? The renewal rate is pretty bad, from what I've heard, and at least this season we had empty seats sold. Get ready for a lot of 7,000 mid-week games.

What does that have to do with anything?

Unfortunately, I think more of the same- upholding the Samson mandate from two years ago that he won't let Luria spend one cent until they have a stadium. No big or medium name free agents, no major trades, unless it's trading Dontrelle or Miggy for prospects under fiscal control.

The future is bright on the field for the Marlins.

The defense can't possibly get any worse so up is the only way to go.

Our offense is massive and we have the best offensive left side of an infield in baseball. Hermida is finding his groove and he will be massive as well.

All we need is a healthy starting rotation and Dontrelle (who is our most reliable starter) needs to return to his herky jerky form.

Once MLB stepped in again last month it was clear to me that a deal will get done and as IFestaTouchPlus said, $500 million doesnt just appear out of thin air.

I really don't see the attendance dropping below what we see right now in September. There has to be a lower limit that isn't reached due to the public's desire to see a major league club.

In person, no. But those seats that are sold that are empty won't be sold anymore.

Yep, that's the same thing I heard when I renewed.

I'm sure this Franchise knew they won't stay in a football stadium for a long-term in 93. They had 15 years to get ready early and save some money.

Loria calls the shots , but you are correct not a dime will be spent to improve this team , they are making loads of money by keeping the payroll around 30 million and will continue to do so . I honestly believe even with a new stadium we are going to be spending a lot of money as long as Loria is the owner . The guy simply doesnt have the money necessary to sign major free agent even when we have signed guys the contracts are almosts always back loaded or have money defered

That's pretty sad, but what else can be expected ? I think they are going to have show us something on the field before the fans ever start coming back. I think the present FO just believes that they don't have to produce for people to show up. This ain't Chicago's Northside people (meaning Loria & Samson), it ain't happening unless you make it happen.

No. The current ownership knows that because of baseball's unique economic landscape they're more profitable with a scorched-earth payroll than a competitive one. They don't operate in good faith, the fans don't show up. They don't care, they're making scads of money. They don't expect a turn-out, quite frankly they don't care.

Yeah but weren't they really close like 3 years ago and all they needed was $ 30 million. Didn't they get like $ 40 some million from the luxury tax last year & this year ? That's like $ 50 million profit (after the payroll) more than enough to bridge the gap. What's the holdup, they should have their money now ?

They had 10 years to save money. :confused

I don't understand you Joe Girardi, since Loria has only been the owner for 6 seasons right ?

But I think they need to show a little commitment to gain the fans loyalty back, right ? Why should you expect fans to shell out priemium prices for what amounts to a gorified Minor League team ? About Miggy, letting go of a special talent like that is just franchise suicide.

Can MLB institute control over the team and throw out Loria ?

TSwift what you are saying is horrifying me to hell. Please tell me you are joking. This is scandalous and MLB needs to step in, they have to rectify this somehow.

No, I'm not. Major League Baseball does a thing called 'revenue sharing.' Revenue sharing is basically organized socialism in terms of sports economics.

The teams that are most profitable "pay into" the system X amount of dollars a season, based on their financial solvency. Teams that have payroll that exceeds the luxury tax threshold pay a tax on that excess payroll, dependent upon how high they exceed it, and how long they have been over the threshold. All that money goes into a big pot. That pot is then paid out to the teams that are not financially solvent, based upon need. The Marlins are in the top-3 teams in terms of revenue sharing payout. They receive in excess of $30 million annually from MLB. That's why they're profitable. It's not as if this is some grand scheme, it's simply pocketing money that should be spent on the team.

He isn't joking, and it's no secret. At this pace Loria may get lynched by his peers

exactly, and as long as he is pocketing tens of millions, he can cry poor with the stadium, and probably won't have to answer to anyone until they move into (if) a new building. He can polish his 03 ring and know he already has won, so now he can collect from the MLB till.

When the time comes, they will make a half hearted offer to sign Miggy, at 50% of what he can get elsewhere, say thats the max they can do as they turn their pockets inside out and trade him.

Well I knew of the profitablity of the team, but I wasn't aware of the mindset of the ownership. I always thought as soon as they have some extra cash, which after two years of getting a boatload of it from revenue sharing, they would have some money to put back into the team.

So basically, what you are saying is we are screwed as a fanbase, and will forever be the "Blackhole" of MLB ???? That makes me ill....and very angry at MLB :banghead
