September 27, 200719 yr I was remembering a while back people were rooting against the Marlins to help their draft position.. do people actually do it? I like the Cubs, they're my second favorite team and I'll be rooting like hell for them if they make the playoffs but I am rooting like crap for the fish this series and the thought of rooting against them never entered my mind. I really hope some had a knee jerk reaction due to crappy play and don't actually root against the fish because that would make you a BAD FAN. GO FISH
September 27, 200719 yr I am. If we were in a posistion to finish with some "respectability" (i.e. close to .500), then I wouldn't. But what's the difference between finishing with the worst record and the 3rd worse record when it comes to respectability? Or club house attitude, or any of that. No matter if we win out or lose out, we were a sh*tty team this year. Meanwhile, there is one difference: Pedro Alvarez. Unless the Rays win out though, we're f*cked.
September 27, 200719 yr nope. And we aren't talking about the NFL or NBA draft. The MLB draft is a crapshot
September 27, 200719 yr No, but I've been apathetic towards this team since mid-August. same here, at this point I've being rooting for indivual players to reach certain landmarks, but the team as whole i dont even want to watch, and i dont
September 27, 200719 yr I think the prospect of a Pedro Alvarez being out there makes the losing easier to tolerate, but after August, is anyone really to tell anyone else how to get enjoyment out of these games?
September 27, 200719 yr Watching the game on WGN I thought the Cubs were the home team by the booing and cheering. The fans had mostly Cub jersys
September 27, 200719 yr Never, I can somewhat see it in the NFL, and NBA, but the MLB Draft is such a crapshoot, draft position is just not that important. If it were important the Devil Rays would've had a winning season by now.

If it were important the Devil Rays would've had a winning season by now. Honestly, people keep saying this, but if you go through the past MLB drafts and go with the #1 overall pick, or the consensus best-player that wasn't picked because of signability (like Verlander - Bush), the MLB draft is as reliable as any, and given the high-profile big-man busts in the NBA, it really evens itself out. It's picks 15-30 that are the dice rolls, not the top 3 if the team doesn't allow signing bonuses to scare them off. Someone, I think Nny did a list regarding this, too...

While I agree with the fact that the consensus best players coming into recent drafts have worked out pretty well. For the most part though, in the first round of the MLB draft about half of the guys drafted turn out to be decent major league players. While you always see a couple of players who emerge from way late in the draft who turn out to be decent major leaguers. In the NBA and NFL draft you would never see a draft where only one player drafted in the top 10 of a draft is currently in the majors 7 years later, like we now see with the 2000 Draft. With the way scouting is these days, the draft is becoming less of a crapshoot, but it will never be as reliable as the NBA and NFL drafts, just because of the fact that baseball is more of a skill game, where you have to develop that skill for at least a couple years in most cases, before they can even be a factor in the major leagues.

The NBA draft is just as big of a crap-shoot. The thing is, the NBA knows how to run a slot payment system so signability has nothing to do with a player's draft position. For instance, the bottom half of the first round of the MLB draft would be those really good high-school players with strong college commitments in a system that made sense. Not a high-schooler that won't cost a lot or a non-Boras college player. Because the MLB draft makes little 'fiscal' sense it unfairly skews the way the draft pans out. Almost always, the consensus top-25 draft prospects turn legitimate, and that'd be a great success rate for any league's draft. I also think football's draft success is overstated. Because there are myriad roles for a player to occupy, what makes that player 'successful' is often subjective. Case in point, The Ginn Family.
September 28, 200719 yr As to the original question... I'm rooting for them to win every game... Potentially knocking the Cubs out or keeping the Mets from winning the division is worth enough to me and if we finish with the #1 or the #4 pick thats fine too
September 28, 200719 yr do you honestly think... that theres so many cubs, redsox, yankees, mets, braves and other random team fans in miami than there is more marlins fans?.... this is ridiculous.. it must be the same group of people just cheering for the oposing team.. i was at the game today most people just had random blue shirts or signs with random sh*t cheering for the cubs.... there cant possibly so many baseball fans in miami that truely root for those teams all year round no matter where they are in the standings..... if the marlins are in it.... you'll see all those same fans wearing marlins gear..... i have plenty of friends who like to root for the oposing team cause they think it's "funny" it pisses me off....

Yea that was me and yes I was 'rooting' for them to lose. The games do not matter and it is much more important for the health is this franchise for us to lose and finish with the worst record then for us to win meaningless baseball games and finish with the 5th worse record.

Actually yes I do. Mainly because it's not just Miami. And not just the tri county area for the teams that are only here once a year. Mets have a huge draw because of all the NYers here. Braves have a large draw because the Braves were in PBC before they were in Atlanta and still have a huge fan base here. Cards, Cubs, Yankees, and BoSox because they have an actual fan base that go to games even when it isn't the place to be seen. Same could be said for numerous other teams. There may be more Marlins fans in the tri county area but unless there is something in it for them or it is the place to be seen they will sat at home, watch the games on TV, and complain about all the fans from other teams being at the ball park. Haven't you ever noticed quite a few people at games wearing jerseys for a team that isn't even playing there? They go because they love baseball. I have alot of respect for those people.
