October 2, 200718 yr At this moment though, with Cabrera in the shape he's in I believe Wright would get more attention. Sorry to put it bluntly, but you're an absolute idiot.

October 2, 200718 yr Yea, this isn't fantasy baseball d00d. You have to take Cabrera. I can't even imagine his slugging when he turns 26/27. He might flick 50 homeruns just cause he's bored. Wright is gonna have his low/mid .900 OPS (I mean, effing awesome, especially with the D) for years, but Cabrera is the natural. The only bat you can compare him to is Pujols. I do agree it would be nice if his defense was a bit more puntolicious though. I think he'll learn with age (and the Marlins grilling Cabrera and Hanley all offseason).
October 2, 200718 yr Wright just had a better year than Cabrera. They're four months apart age wise. Miguel has better career numbers and better numbers the last 3 years but the gap is not that far apart. Wright if better defensively. Cabrera is constantly out of shape. Cabrera would get more but not that much more.

October 2, 200718 yr Amazing how low the collective baseball IQ is here. Simply amazing. I agree. OPS+ by Age: =========== 21 - Pujols 158 / Cabrera 130 22 - Pujols 155 / Cabrera 151 23 - Pujols 189 / Cabrera 159 24 - Pujols 175 / Cabrera 152 Cabrera is great. Pujols is in a different league.

October 2, 200718 yr Well if Pujols is in a different league, its not very big. Who Arod and Bonds? Just because he's slightty better, he's still in the same league dude.
October 2, 200718 yr That said, this is the perfect time to trade Miguel. In all honesty, we easily have one of the most talented offensive clubs in the game. If you trade Miguel, you're going to get ANYTHING your heart desires. Two years into the mix, we now know exactly what we have in all of our weapons. If you trade Miguel, you fill up ANY and ALL holes this team has, and you still have Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Jeremy Hermida, Josh Willingham, and even Mike Jacobs to round out the heart of the order... And if Jeremy can produce the numbers that we're all now certain he can (.290, 30, 100), you won't miss a beat in the batting order... You'd still have three 30+ homer guys. Wrong on all accounts. No he's not. He did, however, skip one point. We could very possibly get a guy in return that knows what a glove is meant for. I would miss Miggy's bat. But not his attitude or his defense. If the trade were right, it would not be the end of the world to see Miggy in another uniform next year. Yea, getting back Laroche, Kemp, Kershaw and Broxton would be nice and soften the blow.... but trading arguably the most gifted player in baseball at age 24 would be absolutely retarded. I don't care who we get back. There's not a big enough package, (imo), that can replace Cabrera. If only your exagerration were true. He may be ONE OF THE MOST gifted hitters in MLB right now, but no where near the most gifted PLAYER. Look at our offensive numbers this year and then look at our defensive numbers this year and figure out which led to a losing season. We can win without his bat but we can't win with a prima donna playing a blue collar position. The only way I am for keeping Miggy is if he can be convinced playing 1B is his idea so that he will actually put some heart into the position. Jake then would become expendable and could be coupled with someone like Andino for some talent to fill holes.
October 2, 200718 yr Miggy needs to shed 25-30 pounds and get back into shape. I mean yeah he's hitting the sh*t out of the ball, but his defense is sh*t. Make him lose weight so his mobility can help his defense illuminate his overall performance. In order for us to sign Miggy long term he has to be in shape. He's lost a ton of weight since his much publicized weight issues. It's ignorant people that perpetuate this 'issue.' He's a big guy naturally. Go up to him and tell him he's fat. Yeah, so you're calling me an ignorant? He's a big guy naturally, that's why in 03 he was fit and had an 8-pack. He needs to get back in shape for his own good. Without getting into the name calling thing with you two... Miggy is not really out of shape right now. If you had been at the final home game, and it's not surprising you weren't because of the way we actually fit Marlins fans into The Strike Zone area after a sweep of the Cubs, you would have seen this. He didn't look fat or out of shape. Nothing like he came into camp like. It isn't a weight issue with him at 3B as much as it is a lazy issue.
October 2, 200718 yr if they did move miggy they better be getting back a rich return. Something like a few cant miss guys or young stud players maybin+verlander and a catching spec upton+montero+quentin and another Kemp+ martin and a pitching prospect (blls, kershaw, etc etc) they could set the terms but they better be getting back a repayment greater then 3 times what texas just got as miggy is perhaps the most valuable young player in baseball right now

Jake then would become expendable and could be coupled with someone like Andino for some talent to fill holes. Ok. He's the most gifted hitter in baseball. I disagree with everything else you say. You are talking about letting him leave like he is a Dan Uggla talent. That is no disrespect to Uggla who is a very nice player, but Miguel Cabrera is in the pantheon of awesome hitters. You don't just let him walk because YOU think he's a prima donna that's doesn't give a sh*t. That's not true. and what do you think Jake and Andino can bring us?
October 2, 200718 yr There is no way that the Marlins will agree to pay Miggy the kind of money that he will be demanding in a couple of years. My guess is that he will want a long term deal, say 5 to 8 years, for about 20 million per. We have to get used to the fact that he will not be with us for much longer. The sooner the Marlins trade for Miggy, the bigger the return. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cabrera traded to one of the big spending teams in return for a couple of "Hanley type of prospects". I also have a feeling that Willis will stay with us at least for another season. His trade value is not what it used to be and our rotation needs him next year.
October 2, 200718 yr Flux, my concerns were two-fold. First the timing considering the importance of today's game, and two, using half the story (regarding next year's possible $20 million salary) to fallaciously making their point, knowing they weren't going to get answers to their questions before they asked them. That said, I understand completely what you're saying but I find it hard to believe an intelligent fellow like yourself would really expect answers to those questions, especially while baseball is still being played. Yes, we all want to hear them, and if they asked those same questions two days from now I wouldn't have a problem in the world with these columns being written. I rather doubt one single Marlins player ever saw the article. And if they did do you think it had a negative outcome on the game ? I think not.
October 2, 200718 yr Plus, I don't care how good the player is, if he's making ~20m a year, and we bump our payroll to a reasonable ammount (50-60m), that's 33-40% of our payroll in one player. This isn't basketball where one player can carry you, baseball is a lot more balanced. I don't want to be in a situation like the Rockies are with Helton, where they are basically f***ed for the future because they might not even be able to pay their current guys arbitration thanks to Helton's contract. BUMP I'd rather acquire an .800 OPSing 3B (Blake, Wigginton, Lamb, etc), wait a year or two for Dominguez (or Coghlan), and get 3-4 grade A+ prospects than have the Helton scenario. We'll still have plenty of offensive potential (assuming league average CF and C production) to support our pitching staff. from a different thread but on this subject... anyone know how many teams have won the world series/gone to the playoffs with a player comprimising atleast 30% of it's payroll? I wouldn't imagine many teams, but at the very least, the rockies made the playoffs this year (Helton takes up 30.5% of their payroll).

October 2, 200718 yr I truly love the people that want to move Cabrera simply because they don't like him. Finances not considered, talent not considered, they just don't like him. That one's brilliant. Intangi-scale ho!!!

Intangi-scale ho!!! i might have missed some posts just cause i was skimming it but whos said they dont like cabrera? i know my point is in response to all those that think if he moves to 1B he will be a plus defender...and his attitude...i think we all recognize that he is the best hitter around and that the marlins will eventually move him due to thier constraints(unless we get a stadium deal before next yr)...i mean wouldnt you agree all things considered that cabs attitude can sometimes be...sub par?
October 2, 200718 yr I don't get what atitude has to do with anything when he puts up the numbers he is, and has the potential he has. He has a career mirroring Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. at the same age. He is basically the infield version of Manny Ramirez, in other words, a Hall of Fame type player with media created 'differences' and 'personality' that sadly a lot of the fan base buys in to because they believe every word a beat wrtier tells them. I'd take him on my team everyday of the week. Like I've said before, if I'm starting a franchise from scratch, Miguel Cabrera is the first batter I'd take. Don't let a good thing go to waste guys.

No, not in the slightest. He cares a hell of a lot about the games, he's nice to kids and he puts up numbers regardless of what may or may not be going on off the field. Maybe Dontrelle and Olsen should follow his example. And the Marlins should, and have to, make every concession possible to keep Cabrera. He's a once in a lifetime talent. Trading him is the end of the fanbase.
