Las Vegas is not a viable option, Portland will not provide any significant funding for a stadium and I read an article that stated most Portlanders could care less if they have team . My biggest concern is San Antonio however I remember reading any stadium funding for a baseball team must be voted on by the community this takes time andit is not given it will pass .

If rich teams can get penalized for spending too much, teams with less financial ability should be penalized for spending too little (being serious). Every team should be wealthy enough to remain competitive.

The only way this issue becomes even remotely relevant is if 4 purely speculative outcomes all come true:

1) The rumor posted is true

2) Conditional on the rumor being true, Loria's penalty is more significant than a mere slap on the wrist

3) Conditional on 1 and 2, Loria decides/is forced to sell the team

4) Condtional on 1, 2, and 3, Bell expresses a real interest and is the highest bidder.

 

That's like arguing over the Hall of Fame's guidelines regarding what team a player goes into the Hall under in the context of a discussion about whether Cameron Maybin will go into the Hall of Fame as a Florida Marlin, which was initiated by someone citing a single scout's opinion that Maybin has the requisite skills to be a special/Hall of Fame caliber talent.

Of course there was. But Loria doesn't want baseball to succeed in South Fla. I'm convinced that since the David Samson / Joe Arriola blowout a couple of years ago, Loria is doing all he can to get the team relocated.

Or he is just focusing his efforts on destroying it completely so he can sell it to MLB for an enormous profit...something he is known to do.

The orginal deal gave the Marlins total control over the stadium. My understanding of what has been negotiated in this last round is while the Marlins will be year round tenants (offices, etc.) they will in effect rent the stadium for 81 home games+ (time in between, etc.) and the city/county will control usage (concerts, political conventions, whatever) in the off months.

 

All this is subject to the final deal but that in itself is a quantum change in the original terms.

It's up to the various parties to decide what is fair.

It should probably be noted that the Marlins' contribution in rent obligations and upfront financing is significant in regard to other private contributions around the league (where the vast majority are limited themselves to rent payments).

 

Municipalities building sports franchises stadiums shouldn't really be up for debate. It is MLB policy. South Florida has agreed to negotiate upoin that principle and have made substantial steps in the process. The debate for the past couple years, is not "should they?", but over "how to pay for the rest?" and "where?". The parties are at a loss to close the deal in such a way that's a win-win.
