That is excellent news ! hell yeah man Indians acquired infielder Jamey Carroll from the Rockies for a player to be named. That's how well things are going for Dan O'Dowd lately. The decision to give Carroll a two-year, $4 million contract after his career year in 2006 looked bad at the time and then worse as the 33-year-old hit .225/.317/.300 in 227 at-bats last season. Still, O'Dowd is getting out from the deal now without eating any salary, which should help in his attempt to land Tadahito Iguchi to take over at second base. Carroll will serve as the Indians' primary backup at second base and shortstop, with Josh Barfield likely getting sent to Triple-A unless dealt. The Indians could have done better.

Even if we could, I think it would be better spend elsewhere than on Wes Helms. Not saying I wouldn't take him as a role player, and I could even accept him as a starter for one year, but almost $3 mil seems steep.
December 9, 200718 yr Barfield can't get on base. It's true. Lamb is going to cost upwards of $4 million if you listen to his agent (the Red Sox found him too expensive for their purposes) but at least he gets on base at a respectable clip. And Helms is back to being in the position of having to prove his value again after his lackluster season in Philly. It might be unfair but that's where he is. Personally I agree with Lou on Maybin which is at least a half season in the minors which means getting a CFer of which there are a boatload available. Josh Willingham may turn out to be the next Jeff Conine but I think at some point he either improves dramatically, platoons at first or becomes a utility player here or elsewhere, and to that end I'd be looking for a guy who can play center now and left in the years to come. Or in the alternative, we could do worse than three months of Kenny Lofton in centerfield while the kid matures.
December 9, 200718 yr Lofton had a decent year in 07, including a pretty good run in the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets overpaid by someone on a 1-year deal.
December 9, 200718 yr Unfortunate, I'd like to reacquire Helms. I'm not so ready. He wasn't to nice to the fans of the Marlins on his way out. I remember he made a few very nasty comments. I hope I can find a link. We may be small in number, but the ones we have are loyal and don't deseve to be lumped in with Loria & Co.

December 9, 200718 yr Normally I'd probably agree but Lofton's 40 years old and from what I've read is a number of team's fallback fallback. I would guess he makes about $4mil in '08. What may be more of impediment is signing Lofton now could be misinterpreted by Maybin as a lack of confidence in him. I would imagine he expects to come into spring training expecting to win the job.
