December 14, 200718 yr If the build the new stadium at the Orange Bowl site, will there be enough parking? If I recall correctly, there is not much parking around the current and soon-to-be-demolished Orange Bowl stadium. The city must find/build 12000 parking spots within 5/8th of a mile. The city must also build an on-site 6000 spot parking garage. Just a note on parking garages for sporting events, FSU uses 4 of them with another garage on the way and they work just fine if designed properly.
December 14, 200718 yr The closest we've ever been. I seriously hate hearing that phrase. But is Tuesday the last official obstacle, or are there other obstacles in the way? When the Magic got their stadium funding view a global funding project, it took an extremely long time with a lot of lobbying and a stressful vote. None of this has to go to the voters? None of this has to be approved by another commision or party? Is it official that if we get a yes vote on Tuesday, we have completed the stadium deal with absolutely no funding gaps? No votes from the public is needed. No other commision or party needs to vote on it other than the Miami-Dade commision on Tuesday. As far as other obstacles in the way the only things I can see is that the parties involved dont live up to their end of the deal and the deal gets scrapped, by other parties I mean Loria and the Marlins. Yeah this is the closest the Marlins and its fan have come to getting a real home in Miami.
December 14, 200718 yr Even if the package does win a majority, the last-minute nature of the deal leaves it vulnerable to a parliamentary attack. County rules allow any commissioner to defer a proposal if the details are not released within four working days of the vote -- a deadline the administration failed to meet. ''I hope they deliver it [Friday],'' said Commissioner Natacha Seijas. ``If not, there's no way of being able to make a decision for something that serious.'' Invoking the so-called ''four-day rule'' would likely push the vote to Jan. 10. That delay might cause problems for the port and ballpark projects, which involve private companies that might not be willing to wait. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_d...ory/344560.html

December 14, 200718 yr Author I would bet they received it today or yesterday. I would be surprised if they invoked this parliamentary attack - this plan feeds basically everyone.
December 14, 200718 yr I would bet they received it today or yesterday. I would be surprised if they invoked this parliamentary attack - this plan feeds basically everyone. Hopefully. It would be astoundingly foolish for them not to have done so.

As the package shifts from its 4-1 victory in Miami's City Commission on Thursday to the 13-member Miami-Dade County Commission next Tuesday, The Miami Herald has identified at least seven commissioners who are tentatively in favor. Of 10 commissioners reached by The Miami Herald, only Javier Souto committed to voting against the deal. He has been a vocal opponent of the tunnel and continued spending on the arts center. Well at least it looks as if we may have the votes. Hopefully they won't use that "4 day law". I am very optimistic, however, when it comes to the Marlins stadium you always have to apply Murphy's law.
December 15, 200718 yr Who's more hatable? Natacha Seijas or Katy Sorenson? I actually laughed out loud at that one. :notworthy Katy is just a smarmy, do-gooding liberal, know-it-all. Seijas reminds be of those (old) comic book character bad guys who would grab some unsuspecting schmo by the feet and shake him upside down until all his money fell out of his pockets.

December 15, 200718 yr Starting to get a little nervous................. Stranger things have happened but by Tuesday someone will have explained to Sejias the implications for her pet projects going forward and her district were she to use a parliamentary procedure to kill the bill. There are so many constituencies getting what they've been looking for, the PAC people, the Museum Park people, the CRA-related people, the port people, as well as baseball fans and by extension Little Havana, it would be like voting against Christmas.

This face looks like it could vote against Christmas...
December 16, 200718 yr At least nine of the 13 Miami-Dade commissioners told The Miami Herald they are tentatively in favor of the deal that comes before them Tuesday -- more than enough for a majority. She [Katy Sorenson] was also among the commissioners uneasy with routing so much public money into a ballpark. ''The community benefits from cultural amenities that will enhance tourism, which is our lifeblood,'' she said. ``I'm not at all convinced that making a public investment in a ballpark will do any such thing.'' http://www.miamiherald.com/top_stories/story/345573.html
December 16, 200718 yr So to sum up... The vote is when? And if said vote results in majority yay, what else is necessary to complete this bad boy?
December 16, 200718 yr So to sum up... The vote is when? And if said vote results in majority yay, what else is necessary to complete this bad boy? The vote is on Tuesday. If the majority vote Yay only the Marlins could get in the way of ending 10 years of walking through the wilderness. Tuesday is basically D-Day. The day we've all been waiting for. A day which will rank only behind October 27th, 1997 and October 25th, 2003 as the greatest day in the history of this franchise. (Can I hype it up any more?)
December 16, 200718 yr Team President David Samson described himself as president of the "soon-to-be Miami Marlins" in remarks before city commissioners. Palm Beach Post Good omen? It is never a good omen when "Samson" "President" and "Marlins" are all in the same sentence, unfortunately.

IMO the day the shovel hits dirt for a MLB baseball stadium will be much, much more glorious than both of the World Series wins. Crazy, I know...but even in 1997 there was uncertainty about the future of the franchise. It will be a beautiful thing knowing they are here to stay in Miami for the long run.
December 16, 200718 yr Look at it this way, October 25th 2003 is bittersweet for me. I wouldn't mind it dropping to Third, behind the First WS and this Ballpark. October 25th 2003- Grandfather, who grew up rooting against the Yankees and for the Brooklyn Dodgers in NY passed away after a bout with cancer. One thing is for sure...He died happy knowing the Yankees didn't win another G** D**** Championship. Mother went up to NY for the Funeral and came back with a New York Post Newspaper (from his subscription ironically) with Josh Beckett on the back with the title "King Fish" on it. Inside is his obituary. Chris
