I recently became unemployed, and am currently seeking employment in the Miami Area. I am a jack of all trades, however a master at none. I am a fast learner however.

 

I am looking for an interview, as my resume' is just what you would expect from a 20 year old college student (bare).

Pay attention to the first one:

I have worked as a salesperson, in hardware, as a cashier in a gas station, and a Office assistant.

 

I wouldn't have asked, but considering Publix will not hire me for some reason (tried twice in two years) and other retail outlets have said they are not hiring or are cutting back on employees in my area. It's especially difficult now considering the holidays have passed, and they are cuttign back the "Seasonal" positions and choosing to keep great employee's rather then bring on untrained new ones.

 

McDonalds did indeed ask about an STD...however they only offered me a position from 10pm to 6am in a bad neighborhood. I rather be alive then broke then dead with $200.

I'd suggest a seasonal job at a golf course/country club. Everything from caddying, course maintennance, working in restaurant, valet, and more. These places generally need help in some capacity, especially at this time of year. Good luck.

Contact a staffing agency, there a ton of them in South Florida, and this time of year they (we) need all the help we can get.

It took me over thirty applications one summer to get a job. I bet you've only tried a few places and gave up. Gotta be more persistent than that.

Not sure, but they do let their employees give birth in their restrooms.

Publix, Champs, Sports Authority, FinishLine, Footaction, FootLocker, Walgreens, CVS, Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, JCPenney (did you know you can't work in the company as your G/f, and if you do you both get fired), Toys R Us, Pac Sun, FIU Book Store, FIU Labor Center (re-applied for old job, they need workstudy students), Best buy, Circuit City, Old Navy, Tj Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, Macy's.... Oh and the aformentioned McDonalds.

 

Just to name a few. Biggest problem I see is that I do not have a ton of people I know who are in a position to hire. I go back a few days after applying ask hows the application going, but half the places won't "release that information", and the other half probably feel like I am telling them how to do their job.

 

I honestly don't know where to look for smaller companies where the owners are the managers and the application screener. I figured thats my best bet this time of the year.

 

I do admit, I've yet to pull out a Yellow Pages.

I'm assuming location is a big issue for you, then. I know most of the places you mentioned have universal applications that are sent to all stores within a designated 'district'. I don't see how it's possible you didn't get a single response from any of those places unless your psychological evaluation resulted in 'Red'.

There's also this gas station 3 blocks from the Zoo you can go to every morning around 5:30 - 6:00 AM. Guys will pull up in their pickups and shout out things like "I need FOUR today!"

Look for a job at a college or univerisity, even at the lowest level. Once you are in it is very easy to move up and best of all you could get a masters degree for free by working there.

Not exactly, FIU looks for Work Study Students (students who are paid by the goverment for their work, not the school). I was in that boat until I trained the person who took my job. She would earn less money then the 3 jobs i trained her for. $21 in goverment funding lost, or just $10. They now have extra revenue for their department.

You should try contacting a cruise line to work as a check-in pier agent. That's how I started at Royal Caribbean, 11 years ago.. It's a very cool job.. They're usually hiring because of fast turnaround... Most of the people that work there are young people in college, or old people that want the cruise privileges... I worked there for a couple of years and honestly loved it.. And here I am, 11 years later, now working in the head office as a Senior Systems Analyst...

I am not talking about work study, I am talking about a permanent position. Get employeed by a unversity, a staff assistant for example, and you get full benefits. The important benefit is that you can take courses for free. Two years from now you would have work experience and a masters degree.
