Volstad

I wouldn't mind seeing a rotation like this to start the season:

1. Olsen

2. Miller

3. Volstad

4. Hendrickson

5. Badenhop/Nolasco/VandenHurk

Volstad and Badenhop have thrown the best out of any starter this spring and deserve a shot to fill some of those holes in the rotation.

I don't see putting the 2 lefties back to back. Vaden Hurk/Nolasco would be 2nd in the rotation

In that case you would still have 2 lefties back to back, no matter how you assemble the rotation...when you have 3 lefties in the rotation you can't avoid putting 2 lefties back to back.

If this is your suggestion:

1. Olsen

2. VandenHurk/Nolasco/Badenhop

3. Miller

4. Volstad

5. Hendrickson

then hendrickson goes back to back with olsen when the rotation returns to the top.

Best case scenarion Olsen is ready to make the 4th, with that said i think this should be the rotation:

Hendrickson

VandenHurk/Miller

Volstad

Olsen

Bandehop in the pen until a 5th starter is needed

I hear what you're saying but the one thing I think worth pointing out is Badenhop from his last two years of college through his pro career has been exclusively a starter.

I knew Badenhop had a complete game last season at Erie, I've mentioned it here a couple of times. What I didn't know until this morning was he's had seven (7) complete games in his minor league career (plus 2 his senior year at Bowling Green). I don't think there is another pitcher in Marlins camp, major league or minor, who can say that or even approaches it. This guy has starter written all over him and if he doesn't make the team as one, ought to be in the minors pitching every five days getting better and better until his time comes rather than wasting away on the bench without the benefit of a regular schedule of throwing (which starters require).

This is tough, I've been thinking about it for several days now and keep switching my mine on who should be the opening day starter and the other 3/4. As of right now, here are my thoughts.

Scott Olsen

Mark Hendrickson

Rick Vandenhurk

Andrew Miller

Chris Volstad

If Scott Olsen isn't ready for opening day then I would slide him back to #4 (any news on him, by the way?). I would let Volstad start a game at Carolina or Albuquerque before coming up as the 5th starter. Until that time, the Marlins should carry an extra reliever.

I would have Olsen, Nolasco and Hendrickson in the rotation. I would rather keep all the others in the minors but that's not an option so it would be Volstad and Badenhop. I would start the season with a five man rotation. There's really no benefit in going with four when there's not much of a drop-off from the first to the fifth as is the case with us.

As long as Nolasco doesn't pitch against the Mets (and I bet Fredi is thinking about that too) I'll go with whatever the manager decides. I know who I would pitch but until I get a call from the FO it's not worth mentioning.

I assume we'll see Santana, Pedro (or Perez) and Maine, and so how the rotation sets up has to take that into consideration.

At this point, based on what he has done this spring, is Nolasco even a frontrunner for a rotation spot? I think he needs a month or two down in the minors to figure things out. I can't see him in the rotation to start the season, not with guys like Volstad and Badenhop as choices. And if we start the year with a 4 man rotation, which looks like a realistic possibility, then I definitely can't see Nolasco winning a spot over those 2 guys.

That's sort of where I was going (Fredi already said that Olsen was most probably opening the Pirates series, so...).

I really have a hard time seeing how Volstad becomes even the 5th starter. Olsen, Hendrickson, and Miller are locks. I think Nolasco will be the 5th. For that final spot, after hearing Fredi's comments after his last start, I think Hurk has the edge. Plus, I think Badenhop is ahead of Volstad on the chart due to age and lower investment. Volstad comes 7th on the depth chart, in close competition with Gaby and Waechter... What the hell are we gonna do when Anibal + JJ are healthy? Can't wait.----pending injuries----ugh.

Why is Miller a lock? He's getting outpitched in ST by another blue chip prospect, he should go down and find the plate, not Volstad. Nolasco blew it, and if VandenHurk is not careful so will he, because Badenhop is pitching as if he's on a mission. As marlins2003 said it might be best to let Bandenhop in the rotation to start of the year, but he's yet to start a game this spring which why im holding back on him.

according to the pre-game, the marlins (Fredi) has put off indefinitely naming the opening day starter, that sounds to me like they need to see at least one more pitching rotation before picking the starting four (or five).

be interesting to see who works against the yankees and whether they'll throw the kids against them to see what they can do. (Just a thought)

also, five to minors, gaby hernandez is one of those sent down

I definitely think you give Badenhop or Volstad the nod into the rotation. Send VandenHurk down to double-A, Nolasco to the bullpen, Waechter to triple-A.

This is why IMO, badenhop will not be in the pen. If he doesn't crack a starting spot he msot likely will start the season in the minors and be called up when needed. However, it is possible they'll va ehim around until the 5th starter is needed, but who knows

I think keeping a "5th starter" on the roster is necessary to start the season - even if they aren't needed right away. With pitchers still on pitch counts until May or so, you will need more long relief - especially if someone has a rough outing. With that being said, I don't think it would hurt to even keep someone who otherwise would end up in AAA on the roster for a while for this purpose such as a Bandenhop or a Waechter.

(from mlb.com)

Florida Marlins

Reassigned RHP Burke Badenhop to minor league camp

So, This rotation could be more realistic.

1. Hendrickson (confirmed)

2. A Miller

3. Vostad or RVH or Nolasco

4. Olsen (confirmed)

Today, Vostad get the final test for season rotation.

Fantastic~!!

:thumbup

Hopefully he settles down. ST is the right place for him to get knocked around and try to settle down.

i agree...thats the radio guys said...the thing that worries me...was this isnt exactly the Astro's A team here today...but meh...hopefully chris settles down and can make the opening day roster

Volstad's line thus far: 2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

so im guessing with todays performance he doesnt start the year in the fish rotation

im not sure how much this will play into the team's decision...these kind of games happen to even the best of em

This isn't sarcasm. He needs to go to AA.
