So who do you want the Marlins to draft?

Just got done watching the 1st and 10 interview with FSU's Buster Posey and it got me thinking about who I would want the Marlins to take. If he somehow slips to #6 I would love for them to take Posey. Seeing as I don't see that happening, I hope they open up their pockets a little more and draft Brian Matusz. He is going to be an absolute beast. So far this the year he is 10-2 with a 2.05 era and 122 strikeouts in 88 innings. As a Sophmore he went 10-3 with a 2.85 era and 163 strikeouts in 123 innings.

Stacks our minor league pitching even more.

I'm looking at a mock draft (www.mymlbdraft.com)

and it has Matusz going 4th overall to the Pirates.

If he falls to us at 6, I'd be stoked.

If he doesn't then maybe we can grab Aaron Crow.

wow that mock draft has 3 UM guys going in the first round along with Hosmer from American Heritage going 8th...i would love to see the marlins go with some offense in this draft as they are still overloaded with Arms

The only two I am assuming will be gone by the time we pick are Alvarez (please let the Rays screw up and not take him) and Tim Beckham. I'm also going to assume Eric Hosmer will be too expensive.

I'd love to see us go with a Buster Poster or Justin Smoak, as I think both could conceivably help us for our pennant run in late 2009. Great ROI with both of them. Kyle Skipworth is supposed to be the real deal as a HS catcher, and Beinfest loves A. Guys from Cali and B. trying to develop a star at catcher. I can see us taking him just because of our drafting track record. Yonder Alonso is the guy everyone seems to have us taken, because he is from Miami and will probably be cheap...but I just don't see enough upside in him to take him that high, esp. considering he plays a non-premier position that is easy to develop... I hope we pass.

Not 100% sold on Matusz or Crow, wouldn't be disappointed with either, just think they both have some major flaws. Crow with the delivery and Matusz isn't that overpowering, frontline starter that I would want at 6. I like Tanner Scheppers more, think he has a higher upside and will probably be cheaper than both. Athletic guy with a huge ceiling. Definitely a riskier pick though.

Buster Posey (we could use a future catcher)

Skipworth sounds like a more realistic option.

Player Name: Kyle Skipworth

Position: Catcher

School: Patriot HS (Calif.)

School Type: High school

Academic Class: Senior

Birthdate: 3/1/90

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 190 lbs.

Bats: Left

Throws: Right

Report Date(s): 02/10/08

Game(s): Urban Youth Academy Showcase

Focus Area Comments

Hitting Ability: Skipworth is a strong hitter from the left side with the ability to hit line drives to all fields. Whether he hits for average while handling the rigors of catching remains to be seen.

Power: He has plus power from pole-to-pole, evidenced by an opposite-field home run at this showcase.

Running Speed: As a catcher, he's a below-average runner.

Arm Strength: Skipworth has a plus arm; he threw out three would-be basestealers at the event.

Fielding: He is average at best receiving and he occasionally gets handcuffed behind the plate. He has shown improvement from last summer.

Range: As a big catcher, he'll need to show better footwork and mobility as he progresses.

Physical Description: Skipworth is a big, physical catcher with a pretty left-handed swing.

Medical Update: Skipworth broke his hand at an event in Jupiter over the summer, but he's 100 percent healthy now.

Strengths: Power to all fields from left side of plate; arm strength behind the plate.

Weaknesses: There are still questions about his ability behind the plate. He'll need to improve his receiving and footwork. He makes up for his release time with his plus arm, but that should improve over time.

Summary: Arguably the best catching prospect in the draft class, Skipworth has all the makings of an offensive-minded catcher with plenty of power from the left side, a hot commodity for every organization. He's got plus arm strength, but needs some work in his defensive game, something scouts believe will improve over time.

There's a pretty good chance the Rays will pass on Alvarez, unless they plan on trading the desperate housewife (Evan Longoria) or he switches positions. I think the people at the Mock Draft got it right in that the Rays will pass on Pedro and Posey is a beast at catcher. By the time the Fish pick, if Smoak or Yonder are available, then they should go that route. Although I'm a big UM fan, I would probably prefer Smoak. Although I agree we need a catcher, drafting so early in round 1, you pick best player available so I'd pick one of the first basemen instead of Skipworth. And by the way, Hosmer thinks he's "God's gift to the world". I wouldn't like to have such a cocky player, especially a high schooler.

Buster doesn't have the potential upside of a Skipworth, but again..he obviously has the ability to help us much sooner than a HS guy.

But going off of Beinfest and the Marlin's drafting record, I am making the prediction that Skipworth will be the pick at #6, even if Posey is still available. I've heard some people say he is the best HS catching prospect since Joe Mauer.

Catchers are hard to develop to begin with, but high school catchers are even harder to develop than college catchers--which is why I don't want to see the Marlins draft Kyle Skipworth. Posey would be nice but I don't think he'll make it to us.

I want Jemile Weeks. I have personally seen him play a lot, being a Canes fan, and this guy has got talent. He is a great defensive 2nd basemen, and a great hitter, he is definetly gonna have a better future than his brother, Rickie. I know we are stacked at 2nd with, Uggla and Coghlan, but u have to draft the best players, I wouldn't mind getting a good pitcher or ovbioulsly this Buster Posey guy.

as a proud Heritage alumni who was the PA announcer in Hosmer's freshman year, I want us to pick up Hosmer. He is local, he is an infielder, and he is good! Plus, doesn't that kind of show a commitment to this area by picking up a local kid?

Why do we need to show a commitment to the area? Especially by spending millions of dollars for a Scott Boras client? That's ridiculous.

I think Hosmer would drop Boras if he gets drafted by the Marlins...think of it, he doesn't need to worry about money as much if he's playing at home. I really don't see him demanding too much to play for the Marlins, but you are right about him being a Boras client.

I know I just did a complete 360, so I'll put it simple: If he's still on the board, take him! Local boy + great talent = cornerstone for the 2011 season!

I think its a safe bet Alonso won't be picked 6th

It looks like the Marlins are keeping a close watch on Skipworth, and it looks like that's who they will draft.

Did anyone see the UM game last night? What a slam by Alonso! (Oh yea, and opposite field too!)

We already have 4 local products that I can think of off the top of my head.

Robert Andino (Miami), Gaby Hernandez (Miami), Gaby Sanchez (Miami), and Chris Volstad (Palm Beach Gardens)

your putting the kid in a catagory with those guys...He has been compared to the A-Rods of South Florida. He is on a totally different level imho.

I saw yesterday a site that had the Marlins selecting Brett Wallace 1B/3B Arizona St. That would be fine with me the kid is a hitting machine, His skills would actually transfer well to the wooden bat What is so cool is that it also has selecting his teammate Ike Davis 1B/OF/LHP in the 3rd round. Wallace was moved over to 3rd base so Davis could play 1st. Would it be something to have them both drafted by the same organization...Davis is son of Ron Davis fomer reliever of the Yankees and Twins
