Kevin Gregg

Featured Replies

Listen, I'm sick and tired of this guy already.

I'm sick and tired of everyone who calls him "Superman", and I'm sick and tired of the "I can't see" excuse.

If you can't see, don't pitch.

I've had discussions with el_penguino on this board many times about Kevin Gregg, and while we've both agreed we can't wait till he's traded...I've said one thing. "Since he's become closer of the Florida Marlins, his save % has been solid."

Well, I can no longer use this for "Superman."

Seriously...I'm never confident when this guy is on the mound.

There is no 1, 2, 3 inning with him.

Lindstrom might not be lights out, but at least he throws strikes, at a more consistent level, with much better potential than Kevin Gregg.

Kevin Gregg gets paid to get the last 3 outs of a ballgame. This year he is now 10/13 in save opps., and that doesn't include 2 losses to the Dodgers at home this year, where he blew it b/c of some more walks.

It is frustrating...frustrating b/c his opponents batting average is solid. Yet, he can't throw a strike.

I'm tired of watching this guy walk batters, and I'm also tired of his "lucky" saves. The ones where he walks batters, and just "gets by." You can only "get by" for so long. Superman is a character; this is real life.

Right now, the difference between 2nd place and 1st place, is Kevin Gregg. Right now, the difference between 2-5 and 4-3 on this road trip, is Kevin Gregg.

And the bad thing is, a closer usually sets the tone for the whole entire bullpen. When a closer struggles, the bullpen struggles b/c roles are no longer the same.

...and all of this for a guy who came into this year as the HIGHEST PAID Marlin on the team, this year...making, I believe, 2.1 mill a year.

Whether we're out of it, or we're in contention by July...I don't want Kevin Gregg on this team anymore. His value is good b/c every team is looking for relievers. Trade this guy for a solid prospect or 2, and start testing Matt Lindstrom...test with someone from the minors.

Anyone...I'm sick and tired of Mr. 1.2+ WHIP "closing" games.

PS - I never thought I'd say this...but Mike Rabelo makes me want Miguel Olivo back. And I really disliked Miguel Olivo. Let Treanor start every game...at least he can call a game, and block a ball, that a minor league catcher can block.

I didn't read your post yet but I blame it on Rabby. Ever since he has been out of town Gregg has blown 2/3 saves. He was unable to post that video.... all the blame goes to him *shakes head*

:D... You know I am kidding Rabby.

The thing that absolutely baffles me is that Gregg's vision is so screwed up that he can't see the catcher's regular signals, who now have to give hand signals on their chest to call a pitch and he's still being counted on in the same role. This does not seem to me to be what you're looking for in the ninth inning trying to close out a game.

Maybe just maybe Gregg ought to be coming in the seventh at least until his vision issue is corrected, as the first reliever and use Lindstrom/Pinto/Kensing to setup and let Waechter and Nelson close out games. Just trying to think outside the box.

Yeah, I can't believe that we are going with a closer who can't see anything.

Lindstrom or Pinto needs to take over, NOW.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to disagree that being able to see is pretty damn basic. He shouldn't be out there unless and until that can be corrected.

You want to tell me a ballplayer making money can't get a appointment with a Ophthalmologist, i would bet one will check him for free just to have his name in the press, when he blow a save he can't see, no problem when he save a game, go figure.

Kevin gregg is responsible for the 2008 collapse , every closer blows games but his last two blown saves are inexcusable . Let the other team beat you dont beat yourself

yeah, I don't buy the "he can't throw strikes, b/c he can't see" excuse.

He's always been a bit inconsistent with his control...with or without correct goggles / vision.

He's just not really a closer.

A consistent closer doesn't put up a WHIP of 1.2 + at a consistent rate.

And this is it, with Gregg.

At least with Lindstrom, you know, if you get it in his head to start using the breaking ball some more, and it gains some consistency, he might just dominate.

We are in trouble , I think I made the mistake of moving away from my original expectations for this team when the Marlins started to win inspite of their poor defense and spotty starting pitching . These games where our bullpen is taxed to hell and we come up on the short time after time have a mental and physical effect on a team .

Well, we just got back in tonight and there is a game tomorrow.

Everything will get back to normal. :)

Lindstrom put up a WHIP of 1.29 last year and has a 1.3 WHIP this year, so I don't see how he is an immediate upgrade from Gregg. He may have more potential but I'm not so sure he'd be an upgrade from Gregg at this point.

The one forseen by the great prophets of ESPN.

At least with Lindstrom, you know, if you get it in his head to start using the breaking ball some more, and it gains some consistency, he might just dominate.

At least with Gregg, if Rabelo could call a pitch away or play catcher we'd be 4-3 on this road trip.

I see where you're coming from, but it's still way early in the season. We're having troubles now, but we're far from done. Every team goes through a bad stretch. That's just how it goes. The good thing is we're losing close ballgames, rather than getting destroyed. I definitely wouldn't say we are collapsing.

not to take any blame away from gregg, cuz he deserves it. but, rabelo is partially to blame too - im beginning to notice hes not that good at blocking pitches.

Rabelo is not at fault for him walking 2 every outing.

And yes, I did mention Rabelo in this thread.

He's at fault too, b/c that ball has to be blocked by a major leaguer.

However, Gregg puts himself in that situation by walking 2 tonight, and the fact you guys think Rabelo is 100% at fault for the pitch to Chavez is ridiculous. There is such a thing as a mistake pitch. How do you know that wasn't Gregg's fault? Did Rabelo TELL YOU, the pitch was called right there? Could've been intended to be a little higher...

Bottom line is, in these 2 blown saves, Gregg has walked 4, in 2 innings.

It's one thing when the team beats you...it's another when you give them the game.

I feel as if some one has just kicked me in the stomach after a loss like tonight and the mets game. When you loss a blow out you can just brush it off easier as a bad day . I would imagine players are the same way.

We're 2-5 in the last 7.

We've done this before, and rebounded nicely.

Every team goes through bad streaks over the course of a season.

If you think the season is over, when we're 1.5 games out of 1st place in early June, it's hard to even call you a fan. No offense...

None taken as someone who actually goes to 20 games a year who lives 300 miles away it is clear I am a Fake Marlin Fan. i am sorry if my acknowledgement of the reality that my team has some issues that traditionally in baseball have lead teams not to have great seasons has offended you .

Screw him and his 2.54 ERA and his 1.171 WHIP.

Erick, a few days ago, you were calling him an all-star.

I was.

He was 10/11...but the reason for it, is b/c the NL closers aside from Wagner and Lidge...aren't anything special.

There was no more to it, than that.

You can go back to any thread...listen, Gregg has done ok with us, but he's very replaceable. Those #'s aren't anything "special" by any means for a closer.

Gregg is making over 2 mill a year. His trade value will be good come July. Why not trade him? We have a bunch of great arms; I'd like to see one of them tested, and if Gregg could bring a couple prospects back, why not?

Btw, I miss you on the gamethreads. :thumbdown
