July 5, 200818 yr http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...notes_0705.html What will it take to remove Kevin gregg as our closer?
July 5, 200818 yr I love Freddi's response about being concerned for gregg's job... "No,"( Freddi said, trying to stifle a yawn) "Not at all." Way to light a fire under this team's ass...
July 5, 200818 yr Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez was asked if he was concerned about Gregg now that he has blown two straight saves. "No, not at all," he said after the Marlins' 18-17 loss Friday. f*** you Fredi. Treating us like we're not smart enough to realize how bad he blows. Like it's no big deal. What a silly suggestion. Now why would we want to do that? This team has no idea how to manage a roster. The blame begins with Beinfest IMO. He's our guy. "Our team didn't quit, their team didn't quit, they got the last ups," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We couldn't get outs. They couldn't either." I am so damn sick of that excuse. That's the second night in row Fedi's justified his teams sh*tty play by saying "oh well they batted last." Hold yourself and your team f***in responsable. Stop being such a p***y.
July 5, 200818 yr It seems to me that Fredi Gonzalez is better off managing a little league team than a Major League Baseball team. "It's ok! I know we lost, but everyone tried their best! It's not about winning and losing, it's about having fun!" That's the kind of attitude I think Fredi brings to this team. I've never been a fan of Fredi's demeanor, but this "Not at all" nonsense is the last straw. I'm not asking him to be a Lou Pineilla, or a Admin Bowa, or an Earl Weaver, but for Christ's sake, show SOME fire. Please? Argue a call, yell at a reporter, ANYTHING. I'm sick of this passive attitude from him.
July 5, 200818 yr One problem is who are we going to replace him with? Nelson? In save situations, Nelson has 2 holds and 2 blown saves. He will let most inherited runner go home. Waechter has been great, but the man has never been anything but a mopup guy. We need to give him some time to test his skills when they matter, use him as the 7th or setup guy before giving him the closer role. Pinto had an ERA of 7.15 in June. After that, we have Tank, Kensing, and Miller. I'm sure noone wants them as Closer. We have no one. We don't have the luck we did with in 07. We don't have the 07 version of Kevin Gregg waiting in the wings to replace a struggling closer. Until then, it's difficult to expect Fredi to come out saying "Yes, Gregg has lost his job. He is struggling and we can't trust him anymore." because he won't be able to answer the reporters when they ask who the replacement will be. We just need to face that our bullpen is in shambles... Now, if we make a trade, that would be awesome beyond belief.

With the bases empty, opposing hitters are only hitting .200 against him. Career wise, in save situations, his BAA is .210. His lifetime BAA in the 9th inning is .191. Pretty much a no-brainer.
July 5, 200818 yr I still have very little doubt that the Marlins will sign Joe Borowski within the next 2 or 3 days, unfortunately.

July 5, 200818 yr I still have little doubt the Marlins will sign Joe Borowski within the next 2 or 3 days. Please, God, no. I know I know. But he's way too much of a Beinfest player for the Marlins FO to pass up on. I want to pass on him as much as anyone else, but with the bullpen the way it has been, you know it will happen.

If we sign anybody without giving Nelson a shot first, I'm going to lynch this organization.

I'm still trying to figure out why sh*tty players get the "Beinfest player" stamp and the good players we get do not. I'm pretty sure Beinfest picks them all.

OK, I'll right that down. Never ever ask Nelson for a multi-inning save. But on the other side, those stats look pretty nice.
July 5, 200818 yr http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...notes_0705.html What will it take to remove Kevin gregg as our closer? I have 2 options for you: 1) Send in a professional from the future or: 2) Send in one of Vincent Ludwig's goons!

A beinfest player is hard to define, really. It can't really be explained. I guess if I had to attempt to define a so called "Beinfest player", it would be *A player who has had semi-success in the past and has basically been forgotten by the baseball world and is able to obtain for little or no money. Todd Jones, Joe Borowski, Jacque Jones, Jorge Cantu, just to name a few.
July 5, 200818 yr You see Rab, not all of Beinfest's players are Beinfest players. "Beinfest Player" is just a name given to the kind of player he goes after when he needs to quickly fill a position. And to add to my definition of a Beinfest player...It is a huge plus if said player has previously pitched for the Marlins. Armando Benitez is another good example of a Beinfest player.
July 5, 200818 yr show some fire Unfortunately, it's not likely. He's always made a big deal out of how much he admires the attitude of his mentor, Bobby Cox, whom he apparently regards as some sort of baseball god. "Always the same, win or lose by one run or 10." I paraphrase, but it's obviously a BIG part of his managerial philosophy, such as it is. "Keep running 'em out there" is another of his favorite phrases. Mr. Even Keel, who will never, ever have a grievance filed against him for grabbing a player by the jersey and speaking unkindly to him. :banghead :banghead :banghead But, that doesn't explain why, in a one-run game which had a fairly reasonable chance of going extra innings, anyone would not leave Waechter in to pitch the 9th (and maybe the 10th and 11th and 12th, too, if necessary, he is the long guy, after all,) saving the one remaining reliever for a possible extra-inning closing contingency. Than again, maybe that was part of his thought process, and he just decided that it was better to run Gregg out there right away to blow the save sooner rather than later. :lol :lol :lol Having watched and listened to Fredi for a year and a half, I have concluded that he suffers from the same basic deficiency as Jacobs. He just plain ain't very bright and/or has been hit in the head one too many times by a baseball. There's only one word for that game and how it was managed and played. Pitiful. Fortunately, it was only one game. But, unfortunately, that was about the 10th game they've lost that they should have won. How Fredi intends to avoid the next 10 blown games, which will take them totally out of contention, I don't know and I doubt Fredi does either. They're doing much better than generally expected, but keep shooting themselves in the foot. Perhaps it's that Fredi already has the word from the FO that this year doesn't really matter. And maybe I'm the Queen of England. :lol :lol :lol

And maybe I'm the Queen of England. :lol :lol :lol Bobby Cox is a shoe in for the HOF. Seems like a pretty good role model. I question some Fredi moves from time to time, but I also realize what he has to work with IS NOT a play off caliber team. Still too young making too many brain-farts at the plate and in the field with too many holes that have to be filled from within. "From within" meaning SPs coming off the DL and guys in the minors becoming ML ready. Guys like Maybin, De La Cruz, Volstad, and Coghlan for example. Catcher probably will have to come from outside the org (despite all the guys around here that want to have Bakers baby), but that's about it. The rest of the pieces are there and being moved in with guys that have played together for 3 full seasons will be a bonus many can't, or won't, comprehend. So I guess according to this way of thinking we have won 115 games DESPITE Fredi's leadership. The hole in CF and the depleted SPs which lead to an overworked BP don't come into play. Fredi is just stupid. But it is only brought to our attention by those of you with apparent higher IQs when we hit a losing streak. Or things aren't being done their way. News flash for ya. This year has always been about building towards being able to make a run at it in the future, Your Highness. So if you feel it obligatory to call people stupid or mentally challenged just because you feel you aren't getting your dollars worth watching them, get one of your guards with the funny hats to change the channel for ya.
July 5, 200818 yr shoe in You must have meant to say shoo-in. we have won 115 games DESPITE Fredi's leadership Quite correct. I don't disagree with that in the slightest. obligatory to call people stupid Actually, I felt it was optional. But obvious. So, I called it on the part of both of them. Take it easy, Bob. I don't know you, but I've read your posts here for a long time and, for the most part, I agree with you. They're young. They're building. They're learning. Everyone knows that, even if the posts here don't always reflect it. I was just pointing out an obvious managerial error and commenting on what may or may not be a longer-term problem in terms of general managerial philosophy. I don't think a manager is worth more than a couple-three games per year, if that. So far, Fredi has clearly failed even that minimal test. Perhaps he'll redeem himself during the balance of the season, but I doubt it. That factor may actually matter in future years.
July 5, 200818 yr I heard Fredi say this yesterday before the game. Talk about not learning from mistakes...
July 5, 200818 yr You have no clue on what Fredi is saying to the players. I doubt he said that exact same line to Kevin. Fredi keeps clubhouse issues in the clubhouse... he is not going to trash talk a player in front of the media.
July 5, 200818 yr It seems to me that Fredi Gonzalez is better off managing a little league team than a Major League Baseball team. "It's ok! I know we lost, but everyone tried their best! I'm sick of this passive attitude from him. Yes, of course. That makes sense. That is going to make our pitchers throw strikes, our fielders from making errors, and our batters from striking out. That is going to solve all of our problems. Having Fredi VENT OUR FRUSTRATIONS for us is the solution. As the beer commercial says "BRILLIANT"... Do you know why Fredi can't say that Gregg's job is in jeopardy? Because we have no one else to replace him with. Pinto, J. Miller, Nelson, and Kensing have been as inconsistent as Gregg. Tank, and Lindstrom have been terrible. That leaves Waechter who is our long reliever and needs to stay there because he saves our pen many nights. If I had to make a change myself right now I would go with Kensing because I like his stuff, but I wouldn't have any more confidence in him right now than I do in Gregg. Also, this blaming the pitching coach stuff is such crap. Didn't we want to run Kranitz out of town last year? Wasn't Wiley supposed to be our savior this year? If you are going to put the blame on Wiley for the bad, then you have to give him credit for the good. Olsen has done a 180 from last year. Nolasco has come back nicely from elbow problems and is dominant right now, and Miller has made great strides from the beginning of the season. Lets put the blame where it belongs. The pitchers themselves. J. Miller, and Waechter were picked up off of the street. Nelson is a career journeymen with in an injury history. Gregg is a cast off from a team that had a surplus of bullpen arms whom we acquired for a bag of chips. The rest of the cast is young are all in their 3rd seasons. That being said we've gotten some great mileage out of these guys. J. Miller, and Gregg had career years in 07' and Waechter is having a career year so far in 08'. Nelson has also had some good moments so far, and is sporting a nice ERA. In conclusion, we are making the most of what we have. We don't have the most dominant bullpen in the league , but they are far from the worst. As a matter of fact we have some very nice arms in there. I just think their confidence is a little bit down right now, and they are trying to nibble instead of going right after hitters. Which is what leads to all the walks. Is it frustrating? Hell yes. Is a temper tantrum from Fredi going to change things? Nope. Lets not push the panic button yet. I think this team will have a strong second half, as will the bullpen.
July 5, 200818 yr Sometimes is good to call a player out...especially when that player thinks "it's ok to walk batters" I hope Fredi isn't OK with that...All we can do is hope that by the 9th inning the Marlins have a 3 run lead and hope the opposing team only scores 2... What a f***ing failure.

Because it's easier to be negative than positive. Anyone that can't see the great job that Beinfest has done with this organization is just blind. Is he perfect? No, but he sure has made many more good decisions than bad ones.
