Struggles won't chase Kevin Gregg from role as Marlins' closer

Featured Replies

The idea that last night's locker room was a fun place or that Fredi remained silent and ate a baloney sandwich while the players casually showered and dressed is not in the realm of possiblility.

I'm sure a lot of players and the manager and perhaps some of the coaches had a lot to say last night. Sometimes I get the feeling people think all Fredi does is keep a seat warm next to Carlos Tosca and wait for Admin Beinfest to tell him what to do next, which is an inane belief system

Oh please.

STFU..."Beinfest player..."

Get a clue.

I'm going to give you the WORST PAYROLL IN THE LEAGUE, BY FAR, and see how you do the job. He has no other choice but to add some fill-in's...and for the record, Kevin Gregg was pretty good last year, and is just out of his role...he's not a closer, he's a middle reliever.

This is Loria's fault (if you want to blame anyone).

As far as Fredi, leave him alone. He's actually classy and keeps his stuff "in house."

Every manager has a different philosophy.

We saw how well being calm and collected worked out for Willie Randolph. But of course, there's actually expectations of success in New York.

I have to imagine the positions players were pissed at the bullpen. Some of them had career nights offensively, and it all went to sh*t.

I just don't see Fredi holding anyone accountable. Taking Gregg out of the closer role, even temporarily, would send a message to everybody...Gregg, the pen, the team in general, that he has higher expectations for them than "trying their best." Like winning games in which the offense scored 17 runs.

and Joe Torre... :mis2

we def need a new closer and the bullpen has been aweful!... with Johnson coming back maybe Hendrickson can be our guy

This is Loria's fault.

No disagreement there.

If the deadline goes by and no moves are made, I'd love to see Dolphin Stadium filled with ppl wearing t-shirts with the above quoted statement printed on them.

After last night, as much as I would love to feed Gregg to some rabid pack of animals, I dont think we have one person in our bullpen that could keep a one run lead. I would not mind giving some one else a chance to close (or fail), but our middle relief has done nothing to make the closing spot a comfortable one. And yes I know the closer role demands for someone who can take over a game under a high pressure situation, but bottom line is that we do not have that person in our bullpen.

Its starting to get annoying when we are only 3.5 out of first place, but we are not viewed as a "team", but more like a circus act of HR hitters.

This is Loria's fault.

You must mean t-shirts on the empty seats?? :lol

you know, I'm rather sure Gregg still has an option left

send him to AAA, force him to wear his new perscription, and let him figure out how to pitch with them on there so that he can be effective again here rather than being a blind f*** who can't even see signs.

Johnson coming back and move up Volstad then Tucker is the closer

I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case. When they hired Fredi, they were looking for someone that could be their puppet. They wanted someone to be the opposite of what Joe Girardi was.

I still have very little doubt that the Marlins will sign Joe Borowski within the next 2 or 3 days, unfortunately.

I don't know about that. He made some pretty harsh statements about the Marlins when he left. Very ungrateful statements if you ask me, but I remember him talking about the difference here & in Cleveland and he was not very complimentary of the FO or the Marlins fans.

News flash for ya. This year has always been about building towards being able to make a run at it in the future, Your Highness.

Then don't charge full value prices for the games. Why even try to pass this off as a REAL team ?

Bob this makes absolutely NO SENSE. You always wax gleefully about this "FUTURE" we have to look forward to. Well there is no future like the present, and the players we have now, have a chance to win, if the FO & ownership took the reigns and at least tried. You always make the argument they have tried to win in the past. So then why would we blow a perfectly good chance to win this year ? We had a chance, we led the division for weeks, but now that the team is stuggling its all about the "FUTURE". This is the bullcrap excuse. Covering up for a flawed and cheap ownership that is just salivating to build their stadium, so they can either sell the team or have more revenue while never building a winning team (aka Pittsburgh Pirates).

I knew Bob you and I would get over our little huggytime and you'd once again say something that would make me :banghead

I've always believed that Fredi keeps everything in-house and that we have no way of knowing what goes on privately. I doubt that he pats them on the back after bone-headed plays. Having said that, there is NO excuse or logical explanation for taking Waechter out after throwing 2 pitches to put in Gregg in the 9th.

Let's say through an act of God he had managed to get out of the ninth, we had no pitchers left. We would have had to count on a 2nd act of God to get out of the 10th and so on. The way the Rockies were scoring runs all night there was no reason to believe (especially given the previous night's fiasco) that Gregg was going to come in and be lights out with no safety net in the bullpen. It was a mind-boggling decision and I don't see how anyone could defend it.

Because it's easier to be negative than positive. Anyone that can't see the great job that Beinfest has done with this organization is just blind. Is he perfect? No, but he sure has made many more good decisions than bad ones.

His wins/losses are starting really even out. That makes him replaceable. I've already noted his terrible draft record, he needs to be incredible in his FA pickups and trades. He's not done such a great job this year on either of those.

Erick, "Beinfest player" is not a knock on Beinfest. I actually think he does an exceptional job with the resources he has. It's just a term for the type of player he goes after. Most of the time he is successful with them.

hard to win, consistently, with a 22 million dollar payroll (where's the blame on Loria?)...WHY does Beinfest continue to get the blame?

Why is it insane to think Fredi pats players on the back after bone-headed plays?

"Oh, he doesn't show any passion with the media, or during ballgames, but let's just automatically declare that he shows fire in the clubhouse behind closed doors."

Obviously nobody knows what kind of clubhouse Fredi keeps-- but I don't see how it is wrong to think that if he shows no passion with the media or during ballgames, then he doesn't show any in the clubhouse.

I cant stand when people say "its hard to win with a $22 Million payroll"...Say what u want about payroll but the money isnt on the field throwing pitches or swinging the bats...actually, if u wanna talk about payroll winning games...then wouldnt Kevin Gregg, the HIGHEST paid Marlin coming into this season, be our absolute BEST player? Argue payroll all you want in March and November...but from April-October, don't complain about payroll...games are won and loss on the field, not in the bank...

He made it clear from the time he was hired that he would never publicly berate his players or discuss player issues in the media. He said those discussions would be private. Since we don't know what goes on I take him at his word. Still, I am not a Fredi apologist by any means. I have found the bullpen management atrocious.

Making an attempt to fill obvious holes does have to do with payroll.

This is Loria's fault.

Dolphin Stadium filled ?!?!?!? :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

But I do agree with the sentiment for sure. Loria will be the reason this year goes by without playoffs.

True

...but I'm not about to give Loria credit for pocketing revenue sharing money. All this money better be going into a nice stadium.

I'm not about to blame Beinfest for fielding a team that's over .500, currently, with BY FAR the lowest payroll in the league.

Sure...go ahead and use the Rays as your example. It took the Rays 10 years (and yes I know, their new ownership has only been there 3-4 years). Regardless, it's much more difficult to be a GM, when your owner is as cheap, as they come.
