July 9, 200818 yr The Denver Post reports that the Marlins "have stepped up their pursuit of" Yorvit Torrealba following Matt Treanor's injury. However, the newspaper notes that the Rockies still would likely have to eat a portion of Torrealba's remaining salary to get a deal done. Rotoworld
July 9, 200818 yr Read the Denver post article, rotoworld summerized it poorly. It says that the Marlins interest in getting a catcher has increased with Treanor's injury, but the talks about Torreabla have cooled because the Rockies don't want to pick up any of his salary.
July 9, 200818 yr If they don't want to pick up the contract then don't even bother...this guy isn't even that good anyways.
July 9, 200818 yr If the Rockies pick up half of his contract or more, and we only have to give up a B- level prospect, yea...i'd do it. He is an upgrade both defensively and offensively from any of our catchers.
July 9, 200818 yr The only reason a team picks up the salary of a player in this type of situation is to increase his "trade" value. More money absorbed by the existing club means either more or better players in return. It isn't like the guy is a horrible baseball player, they aren't trying to jettison him - they are trying to get the most they can for him in a seller's market (for catchers) in part because he's lost his starting job to a younger, better player. And it isn't like we are bargaining from a position of strength either, with our catching duties being handled currently by our AAA franchise tandem.
July 9, 200818 yr NOOOOO!!!! :crying exactly my words! btw dood, your sig is awesome! hahaha Thanks :thumbup

I want torrealba mostly because hes got the ML experience unlike our triple aaa catchers and he has to be a better hitter than treanor and god knows better than hoover. But i dont want to give up to much for him.

July 9, 200818 yr I have to admit I have a fascination with David Ross because I would like to think if we make a deal with the Reds it could include David Weathers who I think would be a terrific addition to the relief corps. BTW if you look at Weathers numbers don't be fooled by his overall ERA. Take a look at his road numbers (away from GAB) and you'll see why he interests me. That and the fact he knows how to pitch in SoFla. What worries me a bit about Ross is his occasional back problems but you know it kind of comes with the territory with catchers. What our side of the trade would look like I have no idea. I don't pretend to think I know what Cincy would be looking for in exchange

July 9, 200818 yr All I know is what I hear players say from Hanley on down and that is they are playing this season to get into the playoffs. As a fan of course I think of it as special, but obvious from the many player comments we've heard all season, so do they.
July 9, 200818 yr I am OK with getting Yorvit, but I think we could do better. He overachieved last year, which happened to be a contract year. I would still rather get Lo Duca. I think we need someone who fits our lineup. Not just another guy who is gonna swing for the fences. Lo Duca is someone we need.
July 9, 200818 yr I would rather have a defensive catcher than LoDuca... LoDuca has the arm of a 5 year old...and it's not like he is tearing the cover off the ball. I don't think LoDuca would be an improvement of what we have now at all.
July 10, 200818 yr The way Paul hit in Miami showed me that he still can hit. He's great with runners on base, something that Matt Treanor is terrible at. He can hit everywhere in the order. Also we wouldn't have to give up as much, as we would for Torreabla.

Yes, they also don't suddenly forget how to play the game... like using a garden hose for a bat or trying to catch the ball with their teeth... JMP, dap for you good sir :thumbup

I just gotta chuckle at the thought of having Baby Face back in Teal. I did always pull for him even if his ERA with us was somewhere over 5.

I did always pull for him even if his ERA with us was somewhere over 5. I think the GAB experience turned out to be good for him. He had to bear down and be a pitcher, giving up any illusion that he could throw his way out of any jam. Not only has he posted ERAs in the three for the last four years, three years running, it's been below three on the road. I was a surprised as anyone when I started checking them out about six weeks ago. Who knows? Just a guess on my part, but I think both players push the Marlins forward in their quest.
