July 23, 200817 yr First Nady is done for the year. What do you mean by that? He's playing. CNN ticker said so during my break about an hour ago, since corrected to Willy Mo Pena

July 23, 200817 yr Will Carrol of Baseball Prospectus: "The Marlins certainly have the payroll room to be buyers, but they seem more focused on the small fish. They'd like to get a closer and Brian Fuentes is at the top of their list. The Rockies closer is available and seems likely to go before the deadline. Several other teams are in on this, but two sources have told me that the Marlins are very aggressively pursuing a deal." http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=955

How is Brian Fuentes a "small fish," if he's the best reliever on the market?
July 23, 200817 yr Marlins in Fuentes mix? According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Marlins are among a half-dozen teams pursuing Rockies lefty reliever Brian Fuentes, who has a track record either setting up or closing. The Marlins are always searching for more pitching, and it's no secret that they're seeking help in the bullpen. Considering the team hasn't had a complete game since Sept. 16, 2006, that means every night the bullpen is being used. While the pen has done a nice job, lefty reliever Renyel Pinto may find himself appearing in more than 90 games. So adding another lefty, who also can close, would be a tremendous asset down the stretch. The search for a veteran catcher also continues, but the market is pretty slim in that area. Marlins veteran lefty Mark Hendrickson appears to be available for trade options. Now out of the rotation, Hendrickson has been working in long relief, and he's seeing limited action. It is doubtful Hendrickson will start again for Florida this season. -- Joe Frisaro
July 23, 200817 yr The Rockies asking price is to high it might be better if we went after Damaso Marte or George Sherrill
July 23, 200817 yr well bottomline is the team needs bullpen help especially a lefty. Sure they have done excellent these past few games but there luck can't last forever
July 23, 200817 yr Marte and Sherrill would be cheaper and almost as effective, but if we become a leading team in the Fuentes sweepstakes that might be huge. All I have heard about Marte is that there are about 12 teams after him with the Red Sox and Yankees being two of them. So the marlins may not have an opening there. Also. Sherrill might work to get him out of the AL all together (and he has had a great season so far).
July 23, 200817 yr I would like to see Sherrill or Marte down here...I was thinking how about getting Marte and Doumit from the Pirates
July 23, 200817 yr I would like to see Sherrill or Marte down here...I was thinking how about getting Marte and Doumit from the Pirates I turned on WGN one day and the bases were loaded for the Cubs and Sherill was pitching he struck out the next 3 batters (all swinging) not to mention he was an all-star if we got Sherrill talk about lights out, I think we would be set.

July 23, 200817 yr The Rockies asking price is to high it might be better if we went after Damaso Marte or George Sherrill The Orioles have said that they will only trade Sherrill if they are blown away by an offer so he might be tougher to get than Fuentes.
July 23, 200817 yr it's a shame Tank wasn't able to get back on track this season or we might not even be talking about this. If we're outbid on Fuentes though, I'm sure Sherrill and Marte would be on the radar.
July 23, 200817 yr Honestly, Get the deal in place for Fuentes- then tell them you'll call them back to finalize it. Call Baltimore and offer the same package for Sherrill. Take Sherrill over fuentes because you can control him longer. Chris
July 23, 200817 yr Apparently, the Marlins have been scouting Sherrill, as well. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/07/heymans-lates-6.html
July 23, 200817 yr A team source said the Rockies have asked for Rays Double-A starter Wade Hendrickson, the Yankees' Ian Kennedy, the Red Sox's Clay Buchholz or Mets minor-leaguer Jon Niese. Florida is monitoring Fuentes but is reluctant to part with a young starter. The price for Fuentes has left teams taking a longer look at Oakland's Huston Street. From WEEI and BP this is good for the Marlins I GUESS ... They are one of 5 teams in the hunt for both Street and Fuentes. Also, the Pirates have also said that the Marlins are one of the 12 teams looking at Nady and/or Marte
July 24, 200817 yr According to Joe Frisaro..., From MLB.com via MLB Trade Rumors The Marlins still like the Rockies' Brian Fuentes, but aren't willing to trade Chris Volstad for him (it's unclear whether the Rockies asked, but he's in line with their asking price for other teams). The Fish were previously linked to their expansion-mate on two other players, center fielder Willy Taveras and catcher Yorvit Torrealba. Frisaro's source says that discussion is dead.
July 24, 200817 yr Thats quite the downer of a report. I do not think Fuentes deserves as much as they are asking, but the price will come down because no one is budging on their price.
July 24, 200817 yr This is the same piling on/repeat the rumor stuff that goes on this time of the season. last week it was Barry Jackson increasing his national recognition by saying the Marlins wanted Pudge. This is happening in every baseball market across the country where guys like Rodriguez and Jackson start these stories and they take on a life of their own. Even "if" Colorado asked for Volstad in exchange for Fuentes, it was probably either rhetorical or simply a way of saying to Mike Hill or whoever, "you aren't giving up what we want for Fuentes so let me set the bar so high neither of us walk away with egg on our face. Great talking to you, how's the missus? I hear Sherill might be available but you know how it is dealing with Baltimore...".
