Marlins in pursuit of Fuentes

Ken Rosenthal reports we are expressing interest in Fuentes and other top relievers.

Add the Marlins to the list of teams pursuing Brian Fuentes, the Rockies' left-handed closer.

The Marlins, who are far more focused on acquiring bullpen help than adding a veteran catcher, are expressing interest in all of the top available relievers, according to major-league sources.

Catching is indeed an area of need for the Marlins, but Matt Treanor, recovering from a strained left hip, is close to beginning a rehabilitation assignment. The Marlins would rather go with Treanor and rookie John Baker than pick up a veteran such as the Blue Jays' Gregg Zaun or Reds' Paul Bako, sources say.

As for Fuentes, rival teams continue to say that the Rockies' price is high for a pitcher who will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Rockies counter that Fuentes is a three-time All-Star who is on a roll. Fuentes, who turns 33 on Aug. 9, has pitched seven hitless, scoreless innings in July, striking out 13, walking none.

The Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, Mets and Yankees are among the other clubs that have shown interest in Fuentes.

for the price that the rockies are asking i would DEF PASS ON THIS GUY!!

How do you know? I haven't seen anywhere where they mention what they're asking for. All it mentions is that it says some clubs are saying it's a high price; if the asking pricie is young pitching, that might be too rich for some clubs, but not us since we're stocked w/ young pitching. Anyway, sometimes a team is a quality bullpen arm away from putting it all together and making a run. Remember 2003: One could contend that giving up Adrian Gonzalez for Ugueth Urbina was a high price for a 6 month rental; all Uggy did was suplant Looper as the closer and help us win our second championship. While I lament Adrian's not manning 1st for us (of all of our draft picks through the years, he excited me the most to see w/ the big club), I would say we won in that deal.

Heck, even look back to 97 when we got Dutch for the stretch run...perhaps his leadership was what it took to organize the clubhouse into a cohesive, winning unit. All we had to give up was bilyl McMillon, who never panned out.

We better not trade a lot for this guy, who we aren't going to re-sign at the end of the year.

Guys like Marte sound better, to be honest.

He gets us two picks though, IIRC, something Marte won't

Is this team really a legit championship team? Can a team that gives away outs as much as we do compete legitimately deep into the playoffs? I'm not sure if they can, to be honest, and I'm reluctant to give away a top prospect in that case.

The trick is to get into the playoffs, any team can win once that happens, the playoffs are such a crapshoot the best team in the league hardly wins the World Series in a given year

I've never understood how this works.

Would Fuentes be considered a Type A free agent?

100 games into the season and it is no longer a question. Flaws? Yes, but a contender in the NL East-well, more yes than no. Where are there guarantees for anything?

If they are planning on making a run another starter wouldn't hurt.

There's no starter on the market that would make a difference, really.

Guys like Randy Wolf, Jarrod Washburn, is what I see.

Who would you suggest?

:thumbup

Fans have to be happy the FO is talking about first tier players. My guess is though if they are talking Colorado about him they have to be talking to other teams as well and if it makes us that much more of a contender, next season is a million years away from right now.

My question though would be...

We trade a couple prospects for Fuentes, and Fuentes leaves after the year (I'm 99.9 % positive he would)...what would we get back in terms of draft picks? I never really thought about that, until PWG brought it up.

Would we get a 1st rounder?

I'm guessing we would, since Luis Vizcaino, for example, got the Yankees a sandwich pick, I believe.

I guess it's time to refresh ourselves on draft picks again. My how time flies

Type A = That team's first and a sandwhich pick

Ah...thanks. I'm for the trade, then.

What a joke. The cheapest team in MLB wanting a reliever other teams deem too pricey...

Treanor/Baker sounds aight, but we would have had a Rabelo-like feasting on Bake had he not touched home plate in time. One game you get a guy who can catch a good game but sucks at hitting, the next day vice versa.

No team thinks he is too pricey money wise, they are saying the Rockies are asking for too much as far as prospects go.

exactly, the Rockies probably want to kill our farm system, probably asking for Coghlen, VandenHurk, and Morrison, that would be my guess of the deal they are asking for.

If that's the deal...no.

But...I highly doubt they're asking for that. And if they are, the asking price will only go down, once the trade deadline approaches.

Fuentes vs. Lefties this year

.185 avg.

.427 .OPS (.241 .OBP, .185 SLG)

wow... that is SICK! Especially since our bullpen has been horrible against lefties, that stat makes me want Fuentes even more than before
