Who will be the ace of our staff in 5 years?

Featured Replies

Personally I think its almost certainly going to be Josh Johnson. He doesn't quite have the same stuff as Beckett did, but he reminds me of him in his presence on the mound. He's definitely a horse, and I'd put money on it that he's the one to break us out of our complete game slump.

My darkhorse is Andrew Miller... to me he has the nastiest stuff of any pitcher in our organization, but he's got to learn how to pitch to get guys out on weak contact, instead of always going for the strikeout. Although control is probably EVERY young pitchers biggest hurdle.

If you truly believe they'll be an ace vote for them, if not please pick the last option, don't just pick someone you think will be the ace by default.

welcome to mb.com

i say Volstad will he has the stuff and knows how to manage an inning and/or game

JJ and Volstad both have the stuff to become the "Ace" of the staff, but I went with Volstad because he is a rookie, less then that even.

I agree, and not just because I LOVE YOUR NAME. Edgar will always have a special place in my heart :)

I voted JJ.... but it could very easily be Miller or Volstad, we will have to wait and see.

I'm going between Volstad or Miller. I wouldn't call Miller a dark horse at all, he's got the best stuff out of anyone we have, but he needs to learn control. That said, he's still young, so I expect him to get it.

Good thread, welcome to the board. I've always thought JJ has ace type stuff, love the guy. If Vanden Hurk can put it all together, he could do it too. Volstad has Roy Halladay type potential, and let's not forget about Sean West - he might have the best stuff in the entire organization.

It's nice that we can actually ask this type of question though.

I think Vandy could be a SICK closer.

I think Tucker could be too good of a starter to designate him as a closer.

5 years? they'll all be gone by that time lmao

Hey if we get that stadium by 2011 or '12 we should be doing alright...

Although it does kinda hurt seeing guys like Beckett, Dempster and Penny having so much success elsewhere, I have to admit. Good thing we have top notch scouts and a very good GM (in fact, Beinfest may even be better than Dombrowski).

Concur. Or (credit to marlinslou here) our version of Ryan Madson/Aaron Heilman.

Tucker doesnt belong in the pen, he belongs as a starter.

If were going to talk about closers I might as well throw out Gregg's 9 pitch 9th. :whistle

With a little control, Vandy can dominate.

That would be kind of a disappointment to me... I've always seen them as guys who failed to live up to potential, not solid middle relievers. I still remember when Heilman 1-hit us, ****.....

To his credit, there really has been a lot of talk of Tucker being our future closer within the organization. Some feel he can't get deep enough into games (He goes about 5.1 on average in the minors) and his overpowering stuff is destined for the 9th.

That said, I am not ready to give up on him as a starter. I'd really like to try to stretch him out a bit longer. If he can't get deep into games, then we start trying him in the pen.

I agree with that.
