i can see how maybe we shouldve been fla marlins to begin with, because we were fla's only team, but now were not.

 

sure we were on the county line and not really in miami, but several times in sports something like this has happened. remember, the detroit pistons play in auburn hills, the new york jets and giants both play in nj, and the cavs used to play in richfield, oh.

 

the cal angels became the ana angels a few yrs ago, so the fish should do the same and welcome the 2003 world champs to the field in miccosukee stadium as the miami marlins

If it won't cahnge anyone's perception, then why change the name?

If you help build the ballpark, I'd say the same thing...call it whatever you like. I would rather it be called Florida also, but if Miami-Dade, City of Miami step up to the plate and get this built; I have no problem if they wanted a name change. Don't you think that they deserve that right?

Another reason why the Marlins should change their team to Miami is that there's another team in the state. It's one thing to call your team the "Colorado" Rockies or "Minnesota" Twins when there are no other teams in the state. But when there are they shouldn't be known by the state name.

I think the Florida Marlins and Golden St. Warriors are the only teams to do this.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays only have 8 counties as primary terriotory, the Marlins have 59 counties.

The counties for Tampa Bay are 1) Penelas, 2) Hillsborough, 3) Polk, 4) Sarasota, 5) Hernando, 6) Citrus, 7) Manatee, and 8) Pasco Counties.

 

Marlins have Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Jacksonville-Gainesville-Ocala, Orlando-Melbourne-Daytona, and Panhandle markets as primary territory. The Braves have no claim to it for regional purposes, but local radio stations and cable systems can pick up their games because they are a "national" team.

I've run into few Marlins fans during my many visits to SW Florida, but maybe I'm not sampling a representative part of the population.

 

I don't really care what they are called. I've rooted for the Marlins for 11 seasons and that won't change if they stay as Florida, however I do like Miami Marlins better.

I agree with you CapeFish 100% and thanks for arguing this point for so long today. It doesn't matter how 'cool' Miami Marlins sounds, the team always was and always should be the Florida Marlins. Even though they aren't that popular in northern florida, people from all over the state can still root for them. (I know tons of people in Gainesville that watch and are still big fans of the Marlins). Being from Northern Broward, I can't even stand it when players want to thank 'Miami' for their support, because it's not Miami...its South Florida! You are taking away the identity of the team for many people in Palm Beach and Broward and elsewhere in FLA by changing the name if they get moved downtown.

Maybe I don't live in Broward County, or South Florida, or even Florida but I do live in the outer metropolitan area of a major city. A quarter of that city's work force lives in my county, and my county's citizens make up a good chunk of the fan base of the professional football team that had to move out of the city for space to build a stadium, and for the hockey and basketball teams who once used to dwell in the suburbs. They were always called the Washington Redskins, Capitals, Bullets and Wizards. They were never called the DC-area whatever, or the Maryland whatever. They were rarely called the Washington-Baltimore whatever. The closest they ever came to naming it after the region were the old Capital Bullets. It didn't freaking matter. It didn't hurt my town (founded and well respected before the creation of the capital city) or county in terms of prestige because they changed the team name. I have no problem paying my state taxes that help the capital city, hell, I have no problem with the capital city being independent of Congressional control, but that's for another thread. I just don't feel threatened by the big city next door. Whatever. We help them, they help us. Thats how it works. And, anyways, since they moved the basketball and hockey arena downtown it's much easier to get to with public transit and there's tons of restaurants around than there ever were in that arena surrounded by miles of parking lots and highways. When I meet people from around the county, I say I'm from D.C. with pride, not out of convenience. I don't live there, but it's my city too.

If it helps secure some financing name it the Miami Marlins, or the Coral Gables Marlins or whatever. Even sell the stadium name to the highest bidder, I don't care. As long as the ______ Marlins continue to survive as a competitive franchise.

i would actually like the Giants to call themselves the Bay Area, Norcal, or SF Bay Area Giants, just to anger the A's fans.

Keep it as the Florida Marlins. We've started a tradition as the Florida Marlins with 2 championships. No reason to change that now. Also, I feel that up in central and north florida (where I live), the marlins are still our team not the D-Rays.

 

I also feel we should bring back the teal jerseys also. As people have said we've lost our identity.

the problem is with black jerseys is everyone does it know, even teams who's colors aren't black so it takes away their jersey.

This thread has gone from stupid to ridiculous. The Florida Marlins are the Florida Marlins even if they're in Miami, Key West, Naples, Lakeland, Tampa, Orlando, Ocala, Fort Myers or any other city in Florida. The Marlins organization won't let the team be renamed because it will cause a PR disaster around the state (laugh all you want but it will). I can't believe you people are so stupid that you can't see why they don't want this. They want to attract the Central and North Florida region to the fish for higher TV ratings! And higher TV ratings equal more dinero for the Fish! Dinero people! Money!

I happen to like the sound of the Miami Marlins. And no I did not have a prior notification of this morning's Miami Herald when I started this poll yesterday. I was just curious about what everyone thought.

I don't know how someone can saw that Miami-Dade does not care about the Marlins. What a ridiculous statement! That right there is the reason that nothing gets done in this 3 county metro area, because of the stupid county fights. That was the main reason the team was not named the Miami Marlins in the first place, because Wayne never cared for Miami-Dade, which is why his former hockey team is playing in the middle of a Broward swamp, because that was where their fan base was...Well, Broward proved their worth as a fan base...IMO it's a shame that we had to build two seperate arenas for the Heat and Panthers, when some of that money could have gone to build a baseball park...

At any rate, they will still be our team, whether it is the Miami Marlins or the Florida Marlins. People through out the state pull for the Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat, so why not the Miami Marlins?

This Miami Marlins name-change talk isn't new. I think that was talked about back when Henry owned the team, when a Miami stadium was being discussed.

 

I think Wayne named the team the Florida Marlins so it would seem like Florida's team and he could have the entire state feel like his fan base. A bigger base, more money. I don't think Wayne cares one way or another about Dade, or Broward, or Florida. It's whatever angle he thought would make him a few more dollars.

 

I totally agree it's a shame to have two new sports arenas. If the Panthers and Heat could've shared one in one county then the other county could've built a baseball stadium. But Arison and Huizenga allegedly hate each other so they didn't want to share a building.

 

Don't make fun of the Panthers Sunrise arena and that area. That's a big growing area and not far from my home. There's the Oasis in Sawgrass Mills within walking distance and a lot of stores and businesses in the area. Yeah it was probably a swamp at one time; what area in South Florida wasn't?

 

Also, dont dis Broward fans. They support winners. Just like Miami fans. The Marlins start losing in downtown Miami and they won't draw. That's just like the rest of the country too, including New York and Philly and LA, except for the Cubs and Red Sox fans and look where that's gotten them.

 

I think the Marlins should've always been called the Miami Marlins and I'm a Broward person. Miami Marlins just sounds better. And Miami is the main city in the area. The Panthers should've always been called the Florida Panthers though even when they played in Miami - that's the name of the animal it's named after (the Florida panther) so it sounds right.

Did anyone see this morning news? (Local Fox Channel 7) It says the Marlins agree to change from Florida Marlins to Miami Marlins if Miami helps them get a new ballpark. Actually I like the name Florida Marlins. I am originally from Tallahassee (where I was born) and grew up in Jacksonville so I was a Braves fan even when I moved down to South Florida (I live in Homestead and work in downtown Miami) 15 years ago, but the Marlins stole my heart when I watched them on TV in 1997, taking out SF Giants even before they won 1997 WS Champ and have been a Marlins fan since then.

 

I will return back home to Tallahassee in a few years and would prefer Marlins to stay Florida Marlins, but if it helps them get a new ballpark, then it's fine by me, I'd always follow them.

 

How about putting Teal back on their uniforms? I actually like their new uniforms, but Teal needs to show up more like maybe Logo/letter on their uniforms and caps and Fans wear Teal, Teal Flags, etc. If Teal doesn't show and they're more like "Men in Black" so why not name them "Miami Vice" LOL

The only reason to diss Broward fans, was because someone earlier had dissed Dade fans, and I was just making the point that it isn't one county or another that does not support teams.

My point with Sunrise is that even though it is growing, there can never be all that large a population there, because of the swamps thjat cannot be built on, so the site is inconvenient for the majority of Broward people, as well as all of Dade. It makes MUCH more sense to place a stadium in an urban center, whether it is Miami or Ft Lauderdale, since that is where most people work. Ideally, it needs to be near public transportation as well, which Ft Lauderdale still does not have except for the bus system. This is not a slap at Broward.

Dade's MetroRail is being expanded to reach many additional parts of the county, including the north, which would make the ballpark very accessible to Broward.

It's supposed to be expanded up 27th Avenue past PPS to the county line.

...which means Broward people could drive to PPS, get on a train, and take it into the ballpark, which would be fairly convenient.....

And Broward has Tri-Rail anyways, where you get off at the Tri-Rail station in Hialeah, and transfer to the MetroRail. So even if they don't expand the Metro right away (and the expansion is going veeeeery slow), Broward folks STILL have access if they don't want to drive to DT Miami.

i guess tri-rail is an option, although i've always despised that sorry excuse for mass transit. there's like 1 train every hour, and its usually 20 minutes late or 5 minutes early, so its really difficult to plan around it... argh i hate that thing

I have never taken Tri Rail, but I guess just plan ahead. ::shrug::
