team name change...

Featured Replies

I'm curious what everyone thinks about changing the team name to the Miami Marlins. Although I have not heard anything recently, the name change has been tossed around...What do you all think?

I think they should have been named Miami from the start. I do not like when they are named after the state. When teams have a city name it is more clear where they are from.

I have thought of this a few times myself. I like the name "Miami Marlins". It's like a homage to the old Miami Marlins. Also, most of the fan base is in South Florida anyways.

But here's where I find the problem...

What about the fans up north? I think that if they change the name, some folks will get upset, as if their team was taken away from them. Another problem I find is that most of us grew up knowing the Marlins as the FLORIDA Marlins. It would kinda suck seeing the name change.

As long as they stay here in South Fla., I am happy. :thumbup

This team was named Florida Marlins because people in Tampa Bay were pissed because they lost the chance to move the Giants. So in order to please all of Florida, the name came around.

Now IMO Florida Marlins just rolls off the tongue better than Miami Marlins and its been like that for 11 years. Why mess with tradition now? But at the same time, the franchise was awarded to Miami and now that Tampa has their own team( :lol ), then I think the time is now to rename them the Miami Marlins. :D

Hialeah Marlins, dont even fathom it! Florida Marlins is fine...The people of Tampa need something to associate themselves with besides the Bucs and the D E V I L R A Y S ! ! !

The D-Rays will win eventually and central florida would rather go their games since they are closer. So screw them name the team Miami Marlinsif thats what it take to build the stadium. Remember if you builded they will come.

You people talk about hte tradition of the Miami Marlins....

what about the tradition of the Florida Marlins.....

I guess two world series doesnt mean anything in terms of tradition does it?

You ain't from around these parts, Adam.

This isn't FLORIDA'S team. Hell, 1/3 of Florida are fans of our biggest rivals (Atlanta).

Then, Central Florida has gotten their franchise (who are about to start winning soon, IMO).

Us, here in South Florida, have the Marlins. This is not FLORIDA'S team, this is South Florida's franchise. But like someone said, we can't call them the South Florida Marlins, just as Tampa can't say they're the "Central Florida D-Rays," therefore, we shall be the Miami Marlins.

The Texas Rangers are not all of Texas' team and they remain the Texas Rangers.

The Florida Marlins have won 2 World Series titles.

The Miami Marlins havent done crap.

I agree with you and I rather have the team remain Florida Marlins. However, if not changing the name to Miami Marlins is a deal breaker for a new stadium, then change the name.

I think the idea was from Joe Carrollo the last Miami mayor. So it may not be an issue at this point.

The name Miami Marlins has a lot more tradition that the name Florida Marlins around here. The Miami Marlins name began in 1956. Satchel Paige played for the Miami Marlins. So did Dennis Martinez, Eddie Murray, Jose Canseco, Benito Santiago, and the list goes on. Im guessing out of towners wouldnt know about Bobby Maduro Stadium, would they? Home of the Miami Marlins. If youre talking about tradition, then Miami Marlins it should be, anyway. And as for North Florida fans, if they dont root for the Rays, which most of them don't, then its most definitely Braves country. North and Central Florida and South Florida might as well be two different states.

The Miami Marlins team is history. Florida Marlins franchise started on 1993. We have our own history now, 2 times World Champs! We don't need a new identity in order to have success with this team.

As I said before, keep it as it is unless it is a deal breaker on the stadium.

In addition, The 'F' logo with the Marlins Fish looks AWESOME!

The "M" one isn't bad, either.

They wear the "M" hats in BP and spring training.
