Little girl hit...

Featured Replies

didn't know anything happened, hope everything turns out for the best

I was watching this game with my dad, and I started wondering why they don't show the incident to see if they're okay. But my dad mentioned that they don't show it with the idea in mind that people watching on TV would be discouraged from attending games.

They didn't really show anything about it during the game. On the postgame Herm hoped that the girl was OK, and that they would update us on her condition tomorrow night.

Actually, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the child was a boy who was immediately taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (where my sister used to work) for observation. The team was notified that the boy was doing fine.

When I opened this topic I thought it was about Amezaga's RBI single...

..but it's good to know that the little boy/girl wasn't seriously injured.

lol, Amezaga may hit like a girl, but he runs like a black man running away from the cops

Well, that's good to hear.

So weird, they showed that hit go foul, and my friend goes "how does no one ever get their head taken off by the ball".. No idea that went on.

Jeremy Hermida called it "one of the most humbling experiences of my life," and he wasn't talking about the four runs he drove in during the Marlins' victory over the Phillies on Tuesday. He was referring specifically to his first at bat when he hit a young fan in the eye with a line-drive foul ball.

"My heart skipped a few beats and I got a lump in my throat," Hermida said Wednesday.

It was a harrowing moment for everyone at Citizens Bank Park, players and fans alike.

Hermida said he could tell by the sound of the impact -- a "thump" -- that his foul ball had hit someone.

"And then I saw the dad pick him up and carry him out, and I wanted to almost run over there myself to help," Hermida said.

Instead, Hermida and Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer paused to allow the situation to settle. But Hermida said his heart wasn't into the rest of the bat (he fouled out with a weak swing) and felt worse when he took his seat inside the dugout and heard the unmistakeable sound of an ambulance pull up outside the stadium.

"I was shaken up," Hermida said.

The young fan, an unidentified boy, was in a Philadelphia hospital on Wednesday with a broken orbital bone near his left eye. Hermida tried to get in touch with the family to express his sorrow and see if it was possible to visit the boy, but he was unable to get in touch with relatives. He said he would try again when the Marlins return to Philadlephia in September.

"I'm going to try to do something for him," Hermida said.

I now have a whole new respect for Hermida, thank you for the update

Charges were dropped because the incident didn't happen.

Hopefully Hermida gets to contact the kid's family.

According to Tommy and Rich Wed. night, Herms talked with the Dad and Moyer went to visit the kid in the hospital. The little boy will be fine. And they are arranging for him to be on the field for BP the next time the Marlins come to town. I'm sure he also gets alot more than just that field pass. But I have to wonder why folks sit in those seats and don't pay attention to the game. Especially when you have a child with you.

I usually make sure that if I'm in a seat that is susceptible to line drive foul balls that my son sits on the side that leaves me between home plate and him, that way I can take the brunt of the ball if I need to shield him. When I go to games with my son (or with either of my kids), my head is usually on a swivel to make sure that I know at all times where the ball is. One of the things I hate is when I'm sitting near the field (usually in spring training) and I have other kids around that are standing up and not paying attention. I always tell the kids, or their parents, to have them sit down because (1) they're going to get hit by a ball and (2) if I can't see home plate, I can't see where the ball is going.

Perhaps the remnants of my baseball playing days still remain in me since I'm always on guard as to where the ball is. I'm trying to teach my son the same thing and he is picking it up quickly. People are always amazed when they go to a game with me and my son by the fact that he stays in his seat and pays attention to the game. We went to the Reds-Marlins game that Sunday before Fathers Day with a friend of ours and his three year old son. The three year old wasn't all into the game and was fidgeting and poking my son, which prompted my son (who is four) to just turn to him and yell, "Hey, I'm trying to watch the game. Hanley is hitting!" That's my boy!
