August 16, 200818 yr I would think part of LoDuca's agreement was that he be called up within a few weeks or he wouldn;t have signed..... gulfstream park should be happy and the Mermaids better hide for cover
August 16, 200818 yr Justin Miller has been really great. Is it really a big deal if we lose Mr.Hanging Slider? 2.45 ERA, 1.227 WHIP since the break? When you could demote someone else and DFA Hoover and send Pinto down? I can't agree with that. That 2.45 ERA doesn't include the inherited runners he allowed the other night. I do get what you're saying, though. Kensing was a better option to send down. However, Miller's role in the bullpen isn't even that big. He's not one of the main guys on the backend, nor is he the innings eater out there. There are tons of Justin Miller's out there. I still like Pinto, despite the struggles. He might be struggling, but he's 25, and has been the workhouse out of the pen, all year. With that said...yeah, Kensing should be sent down. Then again, Lo Duca shouldn't be sent up.

When you could demote someone else and DFA Hoover and send Pinto down? I can't agree with that. Rab, remember that we had too many pitchers on the roster, we had to let go of a reliever and Pinto is a lefty and the lefty always has the advantage over the RHP But why Miller? Why not send down Kensing? Or even Pinto, who has been terrible since the break? Miller deserves to still be on this team. Like I said, remember Pinto is a lefty. Well after Kensings' first outing back on the mound last night, he looked good. He pitched 2 innings, had 16 of 18 pitches for strikes and didn't allow a hit. That had to play a part in it, as well as Justin's outing the other day against the Card's where LaRue hit that 2 run double against him even though that was all Pinto's fault.
August 16, 200818 yr I like this move, we needed another bat and LoDuca has been tearing AAA up. Just imagine if he was on the bench in the 9th today instead of Amezaga, with his clutch ability -- who knows what might've happened there. FYI, Fredi stated that LoDuca will be the 3rd string catcher and a bat off the bench upon joining the team.
August 16, 200818 yr Guys, Miller hasn't been all that great this year. Don't get confused with last year. Also, Lo Duca has been tearing it up. A change HAD to come and here it is. 24 AB'S 11 Hits 3 K's 4 BB .458 BA in 6 games. 1. Albuquerque 2. 24 AB's = 3. Not excited about him
August 16, 200818 yr It may not seem like the right move, but the team is in need of something right now. At least the front office is trying to find a missing piece. Though I'm not sold on Lo Duca right now.

Pinto's been struggling like hell. I think 15 days in the minors could help him, and he'd be right back up for September call ups.

If Pinto goes to the minors, they would have to expand Rhodes from his current role. He seems to be only used in specialist situations right now. I'm not sure we can afford to lose too many arms. Few guys have been completely reliable though. Lindstrom has been the most consistent guy by far since the ASB.

Gregg has been awesome since the All-Star Break...he just had a bad night, tonight. Also...if Pinto gets sent down, the guy who would probably get a more important role, would be Hendrickson.
August 16, 200818 yr Odd move, yes. But the team has shown this year it's not afraid to move bullpen parts around. And something should be done with Pinto, probably. Either send him down or put him on the DL. The other option is to use him in mop-up situations until he returns to form, but that only leaves one lefty specialist with Rhodes. If he was younger you may be okay with just one, but I don't know about now...

Also...if Pinto gets sent down, the guy who would probably get a more important role, would be Hendrickson. Lindstrom Rhodes Gregg Hendrickson Kensing Nelson Am I missing someone? Going from 8 man to 6 man bullpen seems like a pretty big shift, though I guess Fredi wasn't really using all six guys equally.
August 16, 200818 yr I don't get the point in calling up Lo Duca...why not just call up McPherson, who's been doing good all year?

There's no way they go with only 6 relievers. Especially since Fredi likes to play "musical relievers" from time to time. At the minimum, you need 7 relievers.
August 16, 200818 yr I don't get the point in calling up Lo Duca...why not just call up McPherson, who's been doing good all year? Apparently, he doesn't fit the role they have for Lo Duca. I'm thinking Dallas is a guy who would be best playing every day, not off the bench, which is where Lo Duca will likely be used.

August 16, 200818 yr Justin Miller has been really great. Is it really a big deal if we lose Mr.Hanging Slider? thats exactly what i was thinking. he is usually good when he comes in to start an inning but when he inherits runners he just sux

Shut him down for a good two weeks then bring him back at full strength

August 16, 200818 yr Marlins promote Lo Duca from Minors Reliever Miller designated for assignment 08/15/2008 10:46 PM ETBy Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com MIAMI -- Minutes after their heart-breaking 6-5 loss to the Cubs on Friday night, the Marlins added another bat to their lineup by promoting catcher Paul Lo Duca from Triple-A Albuquerque. Lo Duca will be with the Marlins on Saturday. In exchange, they designated reliever Justin Miller for assignment. Miller will have 10 days to accept the assignment or go on waivers. Lo Duca, a 36-year-old who played for the Marlins for half of 2004 and all of 2005, was signed to a Minor League contract by the Marlins on Aug. 8, and has been playing with the Isotopes ever since. In six games at Albuquerque, Lo Duca hit .458 (11-for-24) with seven RBIs while alternating between playing catcher and serving as the designated hitter. Lo Duca struggled in 46 games with the Nationals this season, batting just .230 with no home runs and 12 RBIs before getting released. Towards the end of his tenure there, the right-handed hitter barely started behind the plate -- playing mostly left field or first base. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said he'll come in as the No. 3 catcher and be an extra bat off the bench. Miller went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA in 46 games for the Marlins this season. ________________________________________________________________________________ tell me this is just fredi blowing smoke up treanor's and baker's asses. if it isn't, then why make the move? shouldn't lo duca be in the lineup tomorrow, possibly hitting 2nd? isn't that what he does well? i mean, hermida did a great job of barely grazing those 3 consecutive foul balls tonight, but maybe it's time to try something else there, or maybe he could hit 8th (fredi loves to turn that lineup over). (you make me bitter, kevin gregg, you make me bitter.)

But Logan just went 2 innings and gave up nothing. Pinto is our lefty for more than one or two hitters who is pretty good vs righties. Bad or not recently, he is not going anywhere. Justin will be back. No doubt. He has replaced Andino as the team yo-yo.

A guy that is a club house leader, knows how to act in a race, has an arm, is very athletic, and has an axe or two to grind is a valuable bench player, IMO.
