Do any of you honestly think he is going to leave Boston

Nope...and I don't want him, either. (especially at his salary)

1 year deal, 1 mil or less, to replace Treanor as Baker's backup...I'd be fine. Anything more, and I'd pass.

It's not up to him. I've seen a good amount of talk about the Sox letting him got for a better catcher.

There is no doubt in my mind he sticks around no matter if they bring in a young catcher or not. He looked pretty over matched a lot this year, but he still crushed lefties and is a year removed from a solid 2007. Maybe more rest is what he needs and he can morph into a sometimes player. That's a tough argument for an old catcher like Varitek, but I just don't see them getting rid of their captain just yet. I think he'd hang them up before going to another team also. He does have two WS and is turning 37 the first month of the season next year. That's about when catchers quit. I just don't see him as an option for the Marlins.

Although I do think another Red Sox catcher, David Ross, would be pretty interesting for a minor league free agent.

I wouldn't be against it if he came cheap. He still hits LHP rather well, plays decent defensively, calls a good game, and could platoon with Bake and mentor him.

What are the chances of that happening?

Uhh... go look at his '08 statline.

Doesn't matter, he's still going to ask for a lot more than he's worth. The Marlins are not the type of team who would just go out and spend millions for a backup catcher.

Good choice of wording becasue i was about to post Lo Duca

o and Puma

^^

They don't think this thread sucks

ill speak for the heartbeat of red sox nation right now...and they cant say bye fast enough to tek...

I don't think it would be a bad idea if he were cheap but I'd hate to see him end up in any other uniform than the one he's worn the last 10 years or so, IMO he should retire and go out gracefully not string along looking for a paycheck. From what I hear the Sox are looking to keep him but on a year to year basis with a salary reduction.

I agree. They were ready to lynch him after his dismal post-season hitting.

The most overrated player in the game.

I thought that was Andruw Jones!

Andruw Jones was never overrated. He was really good and then got really bad.

We don't need a "captain". This all just silly talk anyway.

I know everyone seems to hate hearing about him, but if you want a backup catcher who has a history of hitting LHP well and will come dirt cheap, then you sign Lo Duca. Forget the jokes about him being a decrepid old man and unable to play defense. Baker would be getting a lot more starts, and if you're trying to sit him vs LHP, then play a guy who in every full season he's played has had an OPS vs LHP never lower than 760, as high as 1100, and usually in the 800-850 range.

If you're more impressed by big names from big markets, keep talking about Varitek. But if people seriously want a backup catcher to play vs LHP, the answer is right there in front of you.
