December 9, 200817 yr The Marlins are considering making an offer to free agent Paul Byrd, the Palm Beach Post reports. Florida is supposed to be content with a rotation of Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez and Andrew Miller, but some veteran leadership wouldn't hurt. It's known that Byrd would like to play in the Southeast. The Marlins wouldn't have to surrender a draft pick to sign him. On rotoworld, care of PBP. Byrd made $7 million last year, and in the past two years has thrown 370 innings at about a 1.35 whip and 4.60 ERA. This was in the brutal AL Central and East as well. He turns 38 before next season. My guess is $5-6 million on a 1 year contract. ---- If any of this is true, I heavily suspect the Marlins will move Anibal for Salty, and then find someone (White Sox?) who will take Cantu's salary.
December 9, 200817 yr My guess is $5-6 million on a 1 year contract. I mentioned a scenario like this last night...the "why not sign a pitcher with the extra 5-6 million dollars?"...but seriously, we can't get anyone better than Byrd, at a price like that? Geez. I'd rather have Pavano at a much cheaper price...
December 9, 200817 yr oh, and I have absolutely no problem signing Byrd, good leadership, good veteran presence on the team, and can be an inning eater. The biggest part of this was the fact that we may get Salty :notworthy
December 9, 200817 yr oh, and I have absolutely no problem signing Byrd, good leadership, good veteran presence on the team, and can be an inning eater. The biggest part of this was the fact that we may get Salty :notworthy This is the exact reason I don't learn how to quote. Why should I learn how to quote when you still haven't learned that good leadership & good veteran presence are quite irrelevant?
December 9, 200817 yr I like Byrd, he would give the Marlins the veteran's presence they like and give the desired flexibility of a 5th starter/reliever. He would fit in perfectly
December 9, 200817 yr Color me unimpressed with Byrd. He is an over the hill righty who gives up a ton of hits (mostly fly balls) and homeruns (31 last season) and only managed to strikeout 82 batters in 180 IP. I believe he is also an acknowledged roider, though as I recall the story was a little convoluted as it involved cancer IIRC. If this is a signing the Marlins made, it would sure be nice to be able to undo that trade that dumped Olsen on the Nationals rather than dump millions on this pile of garbage.
December 9, 200817 yr Dim...Eddie. When you went to Cleveland not so long ago, what was Paul Byrd teaching the younger pitchers in the clubhouse?
December 9, 200817 yr Dim...Eddie. When you went to Cleveland not so long ago, what was Paul Byrd teaching the younger pitchers in the clubhouse? If I remember correctly, he was giving a seminar on how to clear waivers.
December 9, 200817 yr Dim...Eddie. When you went to Cleveland not so long ago, what was Paul Byrd teaching the younger pitchers in the clubhouse? Why do you ask? Do the Marlins now need another pitching coach? A veterans presence doesn't mean he will be coaching Erick.
December 9, 200817 yr I'll pass. I would have paid olsen arb if we needed a innings eater. I couldn't agree more.
December 9, 200817 yr Why do you ask? Do the Marlins now need another pitching coach? A veterans presence doesn't mean he will be coaching Erick. What does it mean, then? Does it mean he puts on his pants in a better manner, before gametime? Does he wipe the younger players' asses before the games to keep the all-important clubhouse chemistry together? Seriously...what? WHY the hell would you give a player 5-6 million dollars, simply because of his "veteran presence?" Heck...for this "veteran presence" we should've just kept Mark Hendrickson. At least Hendrickson has had a successful career out of the bullpen...to go along with his "veteran presence " (not to mention he wouldn't have costed nearly as much).

"Count veteran free agent righty Paul Byrd among the options the Marlins are considering, according to a source familiar with the front office's strategies?" http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content...florida_marlins
December 9, 200817 yr Ill take byrd in a second, I mean not for 6-7MIL a year but if he takes 2-3 im game... You know there is going to be an injury for sure... Thats just baseball... I dont mind a vet like this but of course only at the right price... Vets have been good for our team... Gonzo, Rohdes from last year....

I'm willing to give him a 1 year contract if we are going to trade Sanchez for Salty. But I would not get rid of Cantu just for salary relive. If we get rid of Cantu without getting anything in return just to be able to acquire Salty, I will be upset.
December 9, 200817 yr To make it easier for you he is this year's Hendrickson, Charlie Hough, Luis Aquino, Brian Moehler, Darren Oliver...

December 9, 200817 yr To make it easier for you he is this year's Hendrickson, Charlie Hough, Luis Aquino, Brian Moehler, Darren Oliver... Making an extra handful of millions. :thumbdown
December 9, 200817 yr To make it easier for you he is this year's Hendrickson, Charlie Hough, Luis Aquino, Brian Moehler, Darren Oliver... Would you have paid Hendrix $5 million? Def not, but I think he was worth what he made... he got 2 mil right Rab?

Gonzo, Rohdes from last year.... 1st bolded sentence: Why not just go after a guy like Pavano, then? There are many Paul Byrd's out there who are younger, and don't cost nearly as much. 2nd bolded sentence: Those players didn't cost nearly as much. Also, Gonzo and Rhodes weren't brought in simply b/c of their "veteran presence." They were brought in to fill a role on the field.

Helms is a vet thats helped... I mean if your talking 1-2 mil difference, I would without a doubt take byrd before I took Pavano.. But I get what your saying..

If the Marlins choose to sign Byrd it will be because Beinfest likes him. They are reports of several teams interested in him I believe that he is a crafty pitcher. Many people think he has still has some gas in the tank, I didn't see much of him so I really don't know. He pitched better for the Red Sox but got hit alot. 2 years ago he went 15-8 for a Cleveland team that scored alot of runs. I agree i feel the Marlins can do better but if i put my judgement against Beinfest, I would lose just about every time
