December 9, 200817 yr To make it easier for you he is this year's Hendrickson, Charlie Hough, Luis Aquino, Brian Moehler, Darren Oliver... Would you have paid Hendrix $5 million? Def not, but I think he was worth what he made... he got 2 mil right Rab? 1.5, and he was good out of the pen so I think that worked out fine.

Not just the pen too.. I mean he has a string of solid starts at the beginning of the season...
December 10, 200817 yr Author Carl Pavano's agent, Tom O'Connell, is scheduled to meet with Marlins officials late Tuesday afternoon PT. "The Marlins are very much in the mix," O'Connell said before the meeting. Pavano, 32, was with the Marlins from 2002-2004. In '04, the right-hander enjoyed his best big league season, going 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 31 starts. Following that year, the right-hander signed with the Yankees, where he had three injury-plagued seasons. MLB hot stove blog. ----- Wonder if Byrd talk is a smoke screen, as this seems WAY more likely financially. Pavano would probably only get $1-2 million and an incentive package, Byrd is a lock to get $5-7 million

December 10, 200817 yr The Marlins are considering making an offer to free agent Paul Byrd, the Palm Beach Post reports. Florida is supposed to be content with a rotation of Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez and Andrew Miller, but some veteran leadership wouldn't hurt. It's known that Byrd would like to play in the Southeast. The Marlins wouldn't have to surrender a draft pick to sign him. On rotoworld, care of PBP. Byrd made $7 million last year, and in the past two years has thrown 370 innings at about a 1.35 whip and 4.60 ERA. This was in the brutal AL Central and East as well. He turns 38 before next season. My guess is $5-6 million on a 1 year contract. ---- If any of this is true, I heavily suspect the Marlins will move Anibal for Salty, and then find someone (White Sox?) who will take Cantu's salary. I'm basically reposting here, but I feel it's relevant to this tread, as well. For 2009, I wouldn't mind shipping Anibal for Salty/Max and signing a cheap vet [like Pavano] to be the 5th starter. But we have too little depth at SP moving forward as it is, and that worries me. Then again, we can probably boost that depth a good bit if/when we move Uggla/Cantu/Ross later/after this year. Still a 23-year old Salty or 24-year old Ramirez, both with tremendous upside, would we really big going forward, and maybe even for 2009. Also, one thing that has not been discussed about Salty. Since he is a left-handed batter who projects to play either catcher or first base, he could really fill part of that left-handed 1B/OF void that we have. If our catchers are Baker/Salty, we can also give Salty a healthy number of starts at first to lessen the burden on Gaby Sanchez. This situation also makes Cantu more expendable, and it allows us to fill that last bench spot with a pure OF - and according to Lou, then are many more and better options available to fill this position within our salary parameters. And then our depth chart should be complete.
