December 21, 200817 yr This is from Barry Jackson's Florida Sports Buzz in the Herald today: The Marlins rejected overtures from Atlanta on Jeremy Hermida and declined Seattle's offer of a mid-level prospect for Hermida. The Marlins wanted catching prospect Adam Moore and another player for Hermida, but Seattle declined.
December 21, 200817 yr Well at least they are holding out for something more than just a mid-level prospect.

If this "news" were any more stale, there'd be green mold growing on it. I was going to make a comparison to Tim Dierkes but you know that guy has really done a great job re-inventing his website over the last eight to ten months by dropping most of his old (bloggers mostly) sources for more the Drudge Report model of crafting a story from legitimate (beat writers and columnists on the local and national scene) sources, something that can't be said for Jackson, who never quotes anyone.
December 21, 200817 yr Well at least they are holding out for something more than just a mid-level prospect. 1. Go to bookshelf 2. Find Dictionary 3. Look up Mid-level prospect 4. See picture of Adam Moore
December 21, 200817 yr WHy they hell would they trade the only other LH in the lineup for some dude who is gonna either be splitting time or in the minors next year. Then I'd really be mad because they really are throwing the season away. I'm sick of all these "rumors". If they really wanted a catcher then Olsen/Willingham would have been enough to get somebody! Hell I'd even think about shipping off Anibal Sanchez for Max Ramirez. Catcher isn't as big a concern as people are making it because they would have gotten one for the four guys shipped out.

Did Baker switch to hitting right handed during the off-season? As to your first question, my guess would be: #1 - The FO has little to no confidence left in Hermida. #2 - They want to get something for him that may be useful in the future, whether as a player on the MLB team or in a future trade. There never are many good catchers available at any given time.
December 22, 200817 yr Did Baker switch to hitting right handed during the off-season? "Only other" Means that there's one more aka baker I didn't realize our lineup was so RH heavy until now. damn. Assuming that's what you were referencing anyway, but I don't see what other relevance that rhetorical question would have to what he said.

Assuming that's what you were referencing anyway, but I don't see what other relevance that rhetorical question would have to what he said. I suppose I read too fast and missed the word "other". Either way, I think having a mix of LH and RH hitters is overrated. Especially in the case of the Marlins where a lot of our RH hitters tend to hit better vs RHP than they do vs LHP. And especially when then the LHB in question put up an OPS below 730 last season. Not even to mention the fact that the team has said they will be focusing more on improving the defense & speed, both to which Hermida contributes little.
December 22, 200817 yr I didn't realize our lineup was so RH heavy until now. damn. It's really not that bad. Hermida, McDallas, Baker, and Amezaga/Bonifacio switch. The trick is to get that left handed veteran 4th outfielder/backup 1B..... Oh wait we signed Wes Helms instead for no reason. N/M. We can't do that. We're idiots.

December 22, 200817 yr my problem with dallas is by the day I feel he won't get the job more and more I wouldn't be surprised if he became the "LH OF/1B" and we put up with his bad LF defense haha

Not even to mention the fact that the team has said they will be focusing more on improving the defense & speed, both to which Hermida contributes little. I agree completely. The Cubs made it a point last year to get a left handed right fielder, so much so that they signed an unproven Fukudome to a large contract. Now they're stuck with an under-performing RFer who is afraid to swing because nobody will take on his contract. Is it really worth worrying about having more left handed hitters when you've got right handers who are putting up very good numbers? I don't think we should get rid of Hermida, but none of the reasons why I think we should keep him have anything to do with which side of the plate he hits from. Production is production and I don't understand why some guys get roster spots just because they are left handed when there are right handers that produce better against both sides than a lefty against one.
December 22, 200817 yr I still don't understand why people support the idea that we need to trade Cantu for Jonathan Sanchez. There are talks of him having "upside", but other than his K rates, I don't see anything projectable about this guy. He has had serious control problems, plus he is no that young. I could see maybe if he were 21, 22-ish--but he's 25 and about to enter the prime of his career with no history of success to support his case. Not to mention the fact that we already have a surplus of arms.
December 22, 200817 yr In any case, the bottom line is that there's only one reason to keep Hermida and one reason to shop Hermida. If you keep him, it's because you think he will come around and produce somewhat like he did in 2007. If you shop him it's because you (apparently like the FO) believe that he won't consistently produce at a high level anytime soon. And if you believe that, there's no sense in not moving him for cheaper talent on which you haven't yet soured.
December 22, 200817 yr my problem with dallas is by the day I feel he won't get the job more and more I wouldn't be surprised if he became the "LH OF/1B" and we put up with his bad LF defense haha If Dallas can play LF semi-regularly, my off season criticism of Beinfest will go down a few notches. I just don't want Amezaga or Bonifacio being the 4th OF. 5th? No problem. But we absolutely need a 4th power option for just LF, as Maybin and Ross can play anywhere, and Hermida both corners. This goes for Cantu as well. I just need something out there in LF besides the starters.
