Posted December 24, 200816 yr The Miami Herald reports that the Rays and Joe Nelson have agreed to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. Good for Nelson. The Marlins only wanted to pay him about half that before non-tendering him. Nelson is 34, so this could well be the biggest payday he's ever going to have. ---RotoWorld.com
December 24, 200816 yr FML is all i have to say. Whatever at least he's getting the dough, but i still think he could have gotten more.
December 24, 200816 yr Nice. I really liked Joe. Im glad he got his money. Good luck man, kick some ass!
December 24, 200816 yr no big deal. i hope he does well though except when we face the rays in the world series, lol.
December 24, 200816 yr Let's say he wouldve signed with the mets for 1.5 mil instead of tampa for 1.3 mil does it end up being about the same when you factor in taxes?

December 24, 200816 yr He was smart not to settle for 800k, and I bet he's glad now that we didn't offer him 900k, because he might have taken it (based on reports). I'm also happy for him, and I hope he succeeds.
December 25, 200816 yr Love this signing Think he will be good again but if he isn't, we didn't exactly spend too much and it was only for 1 year Welcome to your new team, Nelson For Marlin fans, you can miss him but hey, you guys have Jose "I own all and you are my bitch" Ceda
December 25, 200816 yr Ten bucks says he will wind up in AAA this year. Especially in that hitter's division.
December 25, 200816 yr Congrats Nelson! At least he didn't sign withing the division. I'm almost positive the Phillies or Mets offered him a contract around the same amount TB offered him but he refused to sign with them.
December 25, 200816 yr Ten bucks says he will wind up in AAA this year. Especially in that hitter's division. While I disagree, it wouldn't be a disaster. We didn't spend too much on him and have many options to replace him. Oh I will take your action, make it 20, im a rebel.

I'm almost positive the Phillies or Mets offered him a contract around the same amount TB offered him but he refused to sign with them. it's a good situation for him, he lives in WPB, and I believe they always mention his wife is a doctor he met while injured, so this way she can stay in the same practice and have a quickie flight to visit him on the weekends

Does what end up being the same? the amount of money he receives for his 1 year contract... I get your meaning. Talking net paycheck. I would think the Rays would be more. NY has state income tax, for one. Just figuring the cost of living in both metro areas and with the much higher sales tax in NY, he probably would save $$$ here compared to the same living conditions and way of life there. Then factor in he lives in WPB, his wife is here, so commuting to see each other often is very viable and cheaper. He did very well. Congrats to him.
December 25, 200816 yr Ten bucks says he will wind up in AAA this year. Especially in that hitter's division. Couldnt agree with you more... Its all good, I mean he was making nothing, I don't blame him for taking the cash, hes set... Good luck in AAA Joe! Best Wishes

If Benched agrees to make it 20, I am up to 30 here, someone keep track.
December 25, 200816 yr It appears that the Marlins did Nelson a favor because there is now way the Marlins would have paid him that.
December 26, 200816 yr I'm happy for him and all, but jeez, one good year and he gets $1.3 million? I think chances are better that he reverts to his "old" self (i.e. the one that got him a minor-league contract with the Fish) as opposed to the lights-out that he was last year.
