March 20, 200917 yr According to what I've heard from people close to the Miami-Dade County Commissioners, it is now very likely that Commissioner Javier Souto has changed his mind and is now leaning heavily toward voting in favor of the stadium. His main point is that the county and city need the economic stimuli that the construction of the stadium will supply. That changes things significantly. Against the stadium are 4 commissioners: Sorenson, Gimenez, Heyman, Martinez In favor of the stadium are the rest of the commissioners which total 9. This insures the passage of both the stadium agreements and the waving of the bidding for the construction of the infrastructure. This last one needs a 2/3 majority or super majority and 9 votes are exactly what we need for the super majority. If Mr. Souto indeed votes in favor of the stadium we will be celebrating on Monday! Finally!
March 20, 200917 yr Well, once the actual agreement passes, I find it very hard to believe that we don't get the super majority for the waiver. I'm confident this is going to get done. Finally.
March 20, 200917 yr We wont be celebrating Monday because this will get delayed or Braman will get his appeal. Sorry something has to go wrong.

Finally! Are you sure that Martinez is against the Stadium? I know that he was against the Global thing, but I think he was in favor of the stadium. Martinez is against the manner by which the county will pay for the stadium. He is concerned that down the road, tourist tax dollars may not be enough to pay for the stadium and the county would have to dip into the general fund to fulfill the stadium obligations. He has stated in the past that he will probably vote in favor of the agreements except for the one that has to do with the county's share of the expenses. When I say that Martinez is against the stadium this is what I mean because this is the most controversial issue. Martinez may indeed vote for the stadium in 4 of the 5 agreements and may even vote in favor of waving the bidding for the infrastructure work, who knows. Either way, if Souto votes with us, we won't need Martinez.

March 20, 200917 yr Here is a news report from CBS4 where it states that Souto has changed his mind because he believes that the stadium will improve the economy. You can watch the video or just read the article. The best part of the video is the end, where the reporter says that by his count, the vote will go in the Marlins favor. Hopefully the votes stay that way through Monday! http://cbs4.com/local/marlins.stadium.ballpark.2.963925.html
March 21, 200917 yr Finally, people are starting to see that the creation of jobs is the most important thing.
March 21, 200917 yr Is Souto that puto that always goes off on tirades right before he votes? Where he spends 30 minutes saying that he watched Mickey Mantle play and blah blah blah...then he gets loud and annoying and FINALLY puts down his vote? And just wanted to say that my biggest problem with all this stadium argument is that so many people who have nothing to do with this keep sticking their nose in it... let the Marlins and their fans do their thing... why fight it if you are unrelated to it? I'm talking to you Norm!
March 21, 200917 yr Remember the long lines for the job fair at Dolphin Stadium not too long ago? The new stadium will definitely spawn many much-needed construction jobs.

Where he spends 30 minutes saying that he watched Mickey Mantle play and blah blah blah...then he gets loud and annoying and FINALLY puts down his vote? That's the one. But for the next 48 hrs, let's be nice to him so he won't chance his mind again.
March 22, 200917 yr The Herald has this development: http://www.miamiherald.com/486/story/961948.html ''We want it to go forward as one big resolution that requires nine votes, with everything in it,'' Alvarez spokeswoman Victoria Mallette said Friday. That announcement came after Alvarez spent Friday morning at the Miami International Cattle Show, admiring prized stud bulls with key swing-vote Commissioner Javier Souto. The cattle show is Souto's pet project. Souto could not be reached for comment Friday night. The agenda for Monday's meeting, released late Friday, shows all five stadium contracts voted on at once. But the agenda can be changed by a simple majority. That would be kind of anti-climatic if it does go to just one vote. Part of me has liked the "entertainment" that has happened up to now. Will watch closely how this finally plays out.
