Marlins release McPherson

"The Marlins continued to pare down their roster after Tuesday night's game, releasing infielder Dallas McPherson and reassigning outfielders Michael Ryan and Alejandro De Aza, and left-hander John Koronka to minor league camp.

McPherson, who was due to earn $500,000, spent all of last season at Triple-A Albuquerque and led the minor leagues with 42 home runs. He batted .239 (11 for 46) with three doubles, a homer, five walks and 15 strikeouts in Grapefruit League play.

With McPherson, De Aza and Ryan out of the out of the picture, the Marlins will not have a left-handed bat off the bench until the switch-hitting Alfredo Amezaga is ready to come back from a sprained knee."

no big loss , between the outrage of De La Cruz and McPherson you would have thought we just gave away two hall of famers instead two minor league players with limited up side

Theres not much outrage on my part. I'm just shocked we couldn't get ANYTHING for the minor-league home run king last year.

You're telling me a combination of McPherson and De La Cruz couldn't net us anything?

lolol, I guess my post a few seconds ago in another thread regarding McPherson may be my last. Sorry to see him go, I don't know that I agree with the decision, perhaps if no one else signs him he'll wind up in NO.

Too bad, really too bad.

The only good news, if you think Brett Carroll is an asset to the team, is that by reassigning the other guys it looks like he made the club.

I'm surprised as well. But especially without Amezega to start the year, I guess the Marlins are OK with no lefty help off the bench. I like that it bodes well for Carroll though; he earned a spot this spring.

Speaking of lefty, lost in the mix is with Koronka being sent down, Meyer is our other lefty out of the 'pen.

Seriously, this move makes no sense at all.

ALL RIGHT, BRETT CARROLL TO MAKE THE CLUB. NOW I CAN WATCH THE GUY WHO CAN'T EVEN HIT THE BALL OUT OF THE INFIELD. YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY.

hmmmmm where is jay gibbons.....i wonder if he would have been handy right about now.

and i wonder what they will do with andino now.

But....we needed to give him a chance to make another team! Because keeping a guy who actually fills a need and actually doing well, would make too much sense.

and i wonder what they will do with andino now.

With Bonifacio looking to get 5 starts a week, Andino is now a 25 man lock as the only middle infield backup until Amezaga is back. Once AA is back, then we'll try and sneak Andino through waivers.

McPherson is going to turn 29 this year , I dont think there is much of market for a soon to be oft injured 29 year old who has a career 245 ave with a grand total of 18 hrs , 91 career hits (126 strike outs) . The guy is Crash Davis kills it in the minors but in the chances he has gotten in the big leagues he hasnt produced. De La Cruz is 25 years old and got shelled in his limited appearances with the Fish, he might turn out to be a useful bullpen arm for a few years but he isnt anything great .

As to your question , I will answer your question with a question of my own . Do you think if the demand for these guys were there the Marlins would just give them away for a tiny bit of cash and player to be named later or in McPherson's case nothing at all ? The Marlins got the best they could for these limited players .

Is Left Handed, beats up RHP and oh yes... we're looking for a lefty bat off the bench... Wes Helms must have a compromising picture of Loria and/or Beinfest

Marlins released third baseman Dallas McPherson.

Our expectations for the Marlins get lower by the hour. Because of the foolish decision to re-sign Wes Helms to a guaranteed contract, the team is now in a position to have an entirely right-handed bench. It's not even a good right-handed bench. Ronny Paulino and Helms are only acceptable against left-handers, and Robert Andino and Brett Carroll have yet to show they can be useful major leaguers at all. Those four combined to hit .223 with nine homers and a 118/33 K/BB ratio in 449 major league at-bats last season. McPherson is hardly a sure thing, but he sure seemed like a great fit for a team going with a light-hitting righty at third. Hopefully, he's able to quickly find a fit elsewhere.

I agree with this completely.

But I will reserve judgement to see if they bring somebody else in, because there is just no way they don't make a move for somebody at this point.

again , his numbers are his numbers , he has not shown himself in his numerous opportunities to be an irreplaceable player at the major league level . this isnt fantasy baseball if the Marlins could have gotten something for him they would have . Not that Wes Helms is anything great but he has accomplished far more than McPherson at the major league level .

Yes, you're right, his numbers ARE his numbers...

and an .816 OPS vs RHP in his MAJOR LEAGUE CAREER is what we needed (at the VERY least) on our bench. Is he irreplaceable? Not by any means, there are no players that are truly irreplaceable, through one way or another... but when your team claims they need a lefty on the bench then you don't show your best left-handed option the door.

It's not a matter of getting something FOR him, it's a matter of letting him play. Dude's only got a little over 100 games at the ML level and he's finally ready to play after a great season in AAA last season, very much on par with his days as a very highly rated prospect and we just say "Sorry, you're not what we're looking for." This is like the guy that gets to be good friends with a girl and when he asks the girl out, she says he's not what she's looking for...

Yes, lately our front office has impressed me to the point I have to compare them to a fickle teenage girl.

The biggest difference between Helms and McPherson is one word... opportunity.

The thing is we're looking at this with tunnel-vision. I'm as guilty as the next guy. The same thing is happening in the clubhouses of virtually every other team and there are fans across the country wanting to lynch their respective front offices for sins real and imagined. This goes on at the end of every spring training, why should we be surprised?

I read sophomoric comments, one after another from Rotoworld and I realize they are becoming less relevant by the day. They still do some things really well, maybe they're just over their heads trying to do too much, but the insanity of some of their posts are becoming more and more common. And I'm not just talking Marlins, it's systemic.

I'm sure the marlins know what they are doing. if everyone on this forum knew more than the marlins front office I think you guys would have the job and they wouldn't. mcpherson isnt much. this isnt going to hurt our team in anyway.
