Kevin Gregg blows it for the Cubs

Featured Replies

Getting Gregg was pointless with Marmol being such a beast.

Because your Jim Hendry. Because you have put all the hours, scouting reports, considerations and thought into this acquisition. Right??? Or did you just make an emotional post after reading this topic? But I bet its because you know baseball so well...wink!

No. It is because as a Marlins fan that watched him last season he knows that Gregg is always a heartbeat away from blowing things up Hiroshima style. Gregg is a born middle reliever. Preferably in games where the team he is throwing for has a healthy lead. Otherwise he is a disaster waiting to happen.

Throwing Gregg as the closer and using Marmol as the guy who comes in when it's tied/close in the 7th and 8th is probably a better usage of their available arms than Marmol closing.

He did it again, he did it again. Kevin Gregg has done it! We can't believe it. You can't conceive it. How'd he achieve it? He's the worst pitcher in tooooown!

Lou Piniella's expression's when Gregg is on the mound are :lol .

yeah, i'd love to see gregg convert to a starter and watch piniella's expressions for 6-7 innings instead of just 1.

Still so much bitterness towards this guy. I do admit I love seeing him blow saves, though.

At the same time, I think he can be a serviceable reliever, just not a closer. Maybe even SU man.

I heard he is really full of himself, which makes me want him to fail even more, I guess. Don't care too much though!

For the record, the Cubbies have a 1-run lead in the 9th, and Marmol is coming in. And KG did not pitch yesterday or earlier today.

That said, Marmol has already put 2 men on as I post this.

Via Rotoworld:

Marmol was already warming to come in for the ninth when Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer turned a one-run deficit into a lead. Rather than try to get his closer ready, manager Lou Piniella smartly opted to stick with his best reliever. Kevin Gregg remains the favorite for saves in Chicago for now.

in fairness he did come into a jam that marmol helped create this weekend against the cards and with runners on 1st and 2nd shut them down retiring 3 straight and keeping the game tied

still don't think he's worth much though

Is this really news?

No, considering it's Kevin Gregg we're talking about. But it is fun (for me at least) when the Cubs screw up in one way or another.

x2

If Sweet Lou doesn't want to lose his hair by the All Star break he'd either

A. Put Gregg at the Set Up Spot and have Marmol Close

or

B. Call up Samardja(sp) and could either put him at Closer leaving Marmol at setup and having Gregg pitch Mid Relief or send him down or Put him at Set Up putting Marmol at closer and having Gregg mid relief or called down.
