Fish #1 in FOX Power Rankings

Forget about Johan Santana or Cole Hamels, looks like right now the Marlins have the ace of the NL East in Josh Johnson.

I don't know if we should 'forget about Santana' after Sunday's performance, though!

Santana didn't do a thing wrong, his defense cost him the game. If it wasn't for that error, we lose in the 9th.

Hamels, on the other hand, is worrying people.

WE'RE NUMBER 1! WE'RE NUMBER 1!

Says who?

I'm both excited and nervous after seeing this. Probably slightly more nervous. I like being the underdog. Then again, I hope this team is gaining confidence with this hot start and a great victory over Johan and the series win over the Mets.

Also, you can't say for sure that the game turns out the same way if Murphy holds onto that ball. Maybe the Marlins make substitutions differently, maybe JJ doesn't pitch the 9th, maybe the Marlins get some runs in the bottom of the 9th, etc.

Not just that.

Most will make the argument that the Johan wouldn't have given up any runs in the 8th if he had pitched it, with JJ giving it up in the 9th.

If Johan had stayed in the 8th, Delgado might have no even hit in the 9th. Delgado was only up because Jeremy Reed PH for Johan, and ended up walking in the 8th instead of being Johan making likely last out.

The 9th would have been Reyes (0-4), Murphy (0-4), and Wright (1-4).

which are you contesting?

ESPN.com has at least one article talking about how the push for the WS last season may have worn out Hamels for the start of the season.

And Santana threw a gem on Sunday, is there any denying that?

I am contending that if it wasn't for that error, we would have been beaten by Santana.

Is anyone else getting some kind of feeling... the kind that they haven't felt since 2003?

Because I really, really am.

How do you figure?

Well that is speculative. IMO Santana did not pitch any worse than JJ Sunday.

Never said he did. My only point was that the only mark on JJ's day was something that only happened because Johan wasn't in the game, and he only wasn't in the game because of the 2nd inning.

:cheers diggin the sig dude! You and a few others are the only ones that actually post things I can stand reading when it comes to real Marlins analysis.

I meant the 'we only won because' comment was speculative. But your latest comment is also speculative.

Both pitchers pitched impeccably. IMO, Johan was slightly more dominating. Anyway, I have no idea how the game would have shaped up if D. Murphy had made that routine catch.

[EDIT] FTR, the 9th inning is not the reason I give Johan the edge. Johan had nearly twice the K's in 2 less innings. JJ was AMAZING tho!

Haha thanks man. Same to you.

well if its power rankings on record, yes of course we should be #1, and by the way they did it i guess that is how it was done. We still aren't the most complete team in baseball, and need to correct some of our defensive and bullpen issues as well as seeing how Miller adjusts in that 5 slot throughout the season, but I'm very optimistic about this year. Go Marlins! :thumbup

stop paying attention to the marlins, media. we prefer making you look stupid

I wasn't speculating as much as using extreme likelihoods to say that Johan wouldn't have had the AB that Reed Johnson had, there for making it so that Delgado wouldn't have had to come up in the 9th.

Also, as to who had a better day, let's look at them through 7 innings (because that's all that Johan pitched, therefor equal footing)

Johnson - 82 pitches, 71% strikes, 1 base runner put on, 1 hit, 24 batters faced.

Santana - 98 pitches, 70% strikes, 4 base runners put on, 3 hits, 29 batters faced.

I do not want to debate on a Mutt's behalf. I just tend to prefer strikeout pitchers. JJ played amazing, and I love him. If he gives us that kind of outing every time, he will win the Cy Young Award.

I guess we split there again. I was a fan of Mitre, I'm all about getting outs a quickly as possible, pounding the strikezone, and allowing less guys to reach base in the process. JJ did all three of those better than Johan. Sure, he took the less sexy route, but he took the more important route as well.

Until the 9th, there is not one bad thing you can say about JJ's performance.

He was racking up mad Q's, for sure
