25 WILD MARLIN PROSPECTS

Featured Replies

25 WILD MARLIN PROSPECTS

1- MICHAEL STANTON (OF), 19, A JUPITER

.417, 3 HR, 8 RBI - 5 BB/ 11 K

At only 19 years old, Stanton has more power, athletic ability, and upside of anybody in the organization.

2- LOGAN MORRISON (1B), 22, AA JAX

.333, 1 HR, 3 RBI - 3 BB/ 1 K

After tearing up the AFL, he got national pub. He is currently on the DL.

3- SEAN WEST (SP), 23, AA JAX

(1-1) 3.00 ERA - 12 IP, 11 H, 2 BB, 15 K

The huge 6'8 lefty has the most upside of any pitcher in the Marlins minor league organization. He must prove he can stay healthy for a full season.

4- GABY SANCHEZ (1B), 25, AAA NO

.348, 1 HR, 9 RBI - 2 BB/9 K

A fridge MLB starter prospect, he lost his spot in spring training. However, it may have been a blessing for both the Marlins and Sanchez who now gets to murder AAA pitching before returning to the Fish later this season.

5- AARON THOMPSON (SP), 22, AA JAX

(1-0) 0.90 - 10 IP, 11 H, 3 BB, 8 K

Sometimes this lefty gets lost in our shuffle of top pitching prospects. Remember that he is only 22 and this could be his breakout season.

6- KYLE SKIPWORTH ?, 19, A GREEN

.226, 1 HR, 7 RBI- 2 BB/ 12 K

Skipworth was awstruck by getting a spring training camp invite. This young catcher has the potential to not only become an MLB starter but an all star. Marlins are batting him clean up at Greensboro.

7- MATT DOMINGUEZ (3B), 20, A JUP

.270, 0 HR, 3 RBI - 3 BB/8 K

Only turns 20 years old mid-season, he already plays major league defense. He will get tested this season at the bat in a tough pitching league.

8- GRAHAM TAYLOR (SP), 25, AA JAX

(2-1) 3.24 ERA - 16.2 IP, 16 H, 6 BB, 10 K

Last season's pitcher of the year looked great last year, this spring, and early this season. Not only does he have talent but this kid knows how to pitch- something both West and Thompson are working to achieve.

9- RYAN TUCKER (SP/RP), 22, AAA NO

(0-1) 17.36 ERA - 4.2 IP, 9 H, 7 BB, 2 K

Plenty of upside here but sometimes Tucker falls in love with his fastball too much which hasn't worked out for him too well at the upper levels where talent has improved. Projects as a future RP prospect because hitters tend to figure him out after 1-2 ABs. I think he will make perfect trade bait come deadline time.

10- CHRIS COGHLAN (2B/UTIL), 24, AAA NO

.231, 0 HR, 3 RBI - 3 BB/ 5 K - 1 SB/ 0 CS

Good talent who will definately become a major leaguer in his career- as a bench player. I believe he eventually will get multiple call ups before being shipped off ala Robert Andino.

11- JOHN RAYNOR (OF), 25, AAA NO

.256, 0 HR, 1 RBI - 3 BB/ 10 K - 0 SB/ 3 CS

Speedy OFer who made a lasting impression on the Fish this spring with the team concept of speed and defense. He will be a future #4 outfielder- and a good one.

12- JOSE CEDA (RP/CLOSER), 22, AA JAX

DL

Marlin fans are excited to see what Ceda can bring to this team in the future- especially after watching the Fish's bullpen after one week.

13- SCOTT COUSINS (OF), 24, AA JAX

.189, 1 HR, 8 RBI- 5 BB/ 13 K- 2 SB/ 0 CS

Will look to build on a .309 average at Jupiter, a tough pitcher's league. Cousins has an absolute cannon in the outfield and plays good defense.

14- BURKE BADENHOP (SP/RP), 26, AAA NO

(0-1) 6.75 ERA -9.1 IP, 14 H, 4 BB, 6 K

At 26, his prospect days are running out but do I believe he's a major league player? Yes. His sinkerball will help a major league team one day.

15- CARLOS MARTINEZ (RP), 27, AAA NO

(0-1) 3.38 ERA - 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 BB, 6 K

At age 27, prospect or no prospect, he looks healthy again. He should get the 1st call up when either Penn or Meyer screw up.

16- PETER ANDRELCZYK (RP), 23, A GREEN

(0-0) 1.42 ERA - 6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 11 K

Some people project this guy a top 40-50 prospect. I put him at #16 because I have actually seen him pitch. He will be nasty. He will be promoted very quickly and is my pick to have a breakout year.

17- DALLAS TRAHERN (SP/RP), 23, AAA NO

(0-1) 5.91 ERA - 10.2 IP, 14 H, 3 BB, 5 K

Scouts have mixed opinions on Trahern. With how deep the Fish are in pitching and Badenhop, VandenHurk, and West waiting in the wings as spot starters, I believe Trahern may never get a shot. He could become another Yusmeiro Petit or Jason Vargas and get shipped out.

18- BRAD HAND (RP), 19, A GREEN

(0-1) 12.79 ERA - 6.1 IP, 9 H, 9 BB, 12 K

Only 19 years old and a lefty. Held hitters to a .211 average through his 1st 47 minor league innings.

19- MIGUEL FERMIN ?, 24, A JUP

.273, 0 HR, 0 RBI - 1 BB/ 3 K

He hit .347 with 17 HR, and 47 RBI in Greensboro last season but he's 24 and needs to improve his strikeout judgement. Still, there's something to be said about his skills.

20- KYLE WINTERS (SP), 22, A JUP

(0-0) 0.75 ERA - 12 IP, 13 H, 1 BB, 6 K

At 6'4 and 200 lbs. he has great size. He doesn't have overpowering stuff so he could move into the bullpen in the future.

21- GREG BURNS (OF), 22, A JUP

.222, 0 HR, 1 RBI - 7 BB/ 7 K - 1 SB/ 3 CS

At one point, Burns was a top rising prospect. He's a lefty CFer with top speed. At 22, the Fish are not giving up on him and his poor strikeout judgement (something he's working to improve this season). He stole 34 bases last season.

22- CHRIS MOBLEY (RP), 26, AA JAX

DL

Mobley has been a solid RPer at every level. Last year, he compiled 28 saves, a 2.93 ERA, and 70 K's in 58 IP earning an All Star appearance. At 26, will he be given a shot?

23- BRYAN PETERSEN (OF), 23, AA JAX

.308, 1 HR, 8 RBI - 5 BB/ 10 K - 3 SB/ 0 CS

Petersen hit 23 homers and stole 23 bases last season but he did most of his damage at Greensboro and only hit .265 with 3 HR at Jupiter. However, Marlins liked him enough to jump him up at AA.

24- PAUL GRAN (3B/UTIL), 23, A GREEN

.325, 0 HR, 2 RBI- 1 BB/ 7 BB

Gran has hit at every level and was an excellent college hitter. He could become a utility player if everything breaks right. He's 5'11 and 182 lbs.

25- TORRE LANGLEY ?, 22, A GREEN

.200, 0 HR, 0 RBI- 1 BB/ 0 K

This is a make or break year for Langley already after hitting just .209 in a hitter's league. He has become Skipworth's backup in single A but he still has some upside.

OTHERS TO WATCH THIS SEASON (No particular order):

1- RICK VANDENHURK (SP), DL - Still could become a legit #5 starter if he can refine a #2 pitch

2- TODD DOOLITTLE (RP), DL - Stuck in AA competing with Mobley to become team's dominant RPer.

3- WILLIE GLEN (SP), AA JAX- (1-1) 4.50 ERA - 12 IP, 14 H, 6 BB, 10 K

-Yes, he's not a prospect at 31, but his story would make Rudy proud. He had a 2.01 ERA last season and was arguably the team's best starter down the stretch. Would the Marlins ever give him a shot at a spot start as a saavy veteran- say a doubleheader? It's not outta the question.

4- JEFF ALLISON (SP/RP), A JUP- (1-0) 0.82 ERA- 11 IP, 8 H, 0 BB, 7 K

- Great story- everyone knows it. This MUST be his breakout season if he wants to make it. And so far he's off to a great start.

5- ISSAC GALLOWAY (OF), A GREEN- .333, 0 HR, 5 RBI - 0 BB/6 K- 4 SB/0 CS

- He's 19. He has awesome potential and recorded seven straight multi-hit games from Aug. 13-23, going 15-for-28 with five doubles and nine runs scored last year.

6- KRIS HARVEY (RP), A JUP- (1-0) 0.00 ERA- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K

- Yes this is Bryan's son who finally gave up becoming an outfielder to try pitching. The Fish haven't given up on him despite being 24. Early on he's pitched 1.1 innings with 3 K's.

7- BRETT SINKBEIL (SP/RP) - (1-1) 11.57 ERA- 9.1 IP, 17 H, 1 BB, 6 K

-Too hitable so far in brief minor league career.

8- LEE MITCHELL (3B)- .306, 2 HR, 9 RBI - 4 BB/4 K

- Possible bench player? I doubt it.

9- JAI MILLER (OF) - .229, 1 HR, 2 RBI - 6 BB/ 14 K- 1 SB/0 CS

- Still on the 40 man roster because of his youth and athletic ability.

10- WADE KORPI (RP) -(0-1) 3.68 ERA- 7.1 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 7 K

- The Notre Dame product is a lefty with good stuff. He's one to watch.

11- ALEJANDRO DEAZA (OF) - .280, 0 HR, 2 RBI- 2 BB/ 6 K

-The Marlins have kept him around for a reason- could still be a solid bench guy.

12- BRAD DAVIS ?- .367, 2 HR, 9 RBI - 4 BB/ 4 K

-Solid defensively and worked hard this offseason to improve with the bat.

13- BRANDON TURNER (2B)-.300, 1 HR, 4 RBI- 7 BB/ 4 K

-High draft pick gets chance to hine in hitter's league.

14- BEN LASATER (3B) - .348, 2 HR, 8 RBI- 3 BB/8 K

-Solid start to '09. One to watch?

Thanks for the 1st edition of this years prospects. I know Taylor doesn't rank high on everyones prospect list but it seems to me the kid can pitch. Also how do you see Greensboro working out the catching situation between Langley and Skipworth?

No problem.

Just so everyone knows.....

1) I never claim to be an expert

2) I do not know EVERY prospect

3) My rankings are based on my opinion (everyone has their own)

However, I will update everyone's stats all season, only write facts about what I read or know about prospects, and I do claim to be a big minor league baseball fan as I have attended many Carolina, Jupiter, and even 1 Greensboro game in the past. So I have seen many of these players live.

To answer your question, I heard they are trying to work Langley out at 1st base but he's the only other catcher on the team.

This has to be a good year for Torre- he could be boom or bust.

Where's Corey Madden?

No, really, where is he? Does he still play for the Marlins organization?

Corey Madden- I saw him pitch at Greensboro.

He had an amazing year last year- (6-0) 1.04 ERA with 104 K's in 69 IP with a .175 BA against.

I didn't include him because he is currently on the DL at single A Jupiter and he's 25 years old.

He is definately one to watch though.

Oh, alright. I didn't know he was on the DL. Is it something serious or just a minor strain here or there?

He was a beast last year, hopefully he can keep it up.

Thanks for this thread, by the way!

1. Mike Stanton

2. Logan Morrison

3. Matt Dominguez

4. Sean West

5. Kyle Skipworth

6. Chris Coghlan < - 2B over 1B

7. Gaby Sanchez

8. Ryan Tucker

9. Jose Ceda

10. Scott Cousins < - Top defensive, Top Power Potential outfielder

11. Aaron Thompson

12. Brad Hand

13. Isaac Galloway < - Highest upside outside the top 5

14. Jake Smolinksi < - Big omission. He'd be in most organizations top 10. Even higher if he transitions to 2B smoothly

15. Bryan Petersen < - Starter potential

16. John Raynor < - We care about upside, has to be behind the other OF. K rate is alarming

17. Chris Leroux < - Big omission. One of the best fastballs in system, already protected on 40 man

18. Dallas Trahern

19. Kyle Winters

20. Graham Taylor < I do not think there will ever be another Jamie Moyer

21. Brett Sinkbiel

22. PJ Dean < - Next four have serious breakout potential as low level starters

23. Kyle Kaminska

24. Alejandro Sanabia

25. Blake Brewer

Watch List - Hayes (solid backup type), Burns (tools), Olmos (big arm), Ceballos (age), Parcel (big arm), Wood (protected 40 man)

I respectfully say, I think you have a lot of work to do to familiarize yourself with the system. My list may not be perfect as I am doing it off the top of my head, but some of your names are like what??? Badenhop, Martinez, Andrelczyk, Fermin, Mobley, Gran, Langley, Doolittle, Allison, Hickman, Harvey, Mitchell, Korpi, and De Aza??? These are all fringe MLB bench players with relatively no potential to develop into average starters. They are all clearly in our top 30-50, if not farther back for some of them. It's unlikely any of them ever make a major impact, and we have a lot of players who can.

Let me start by saying.....I've always enjoyed MarlinsLou's posts.

However- that list is not accurate at all. It doesn't even make sense.

I disagree with almost everything but it's ok....

1) You have Trahern over Graham Taylor!?!? Thats the Marlins minor League Pitcher of the Year. And yes I've watched him pitch.

2) Bryan Petersen? Starter potential? Over John Raynor? Petersen is projected as a 27 on a scale of 80 contact rate.

3) John Raynor K rate? His speed is a 97 rating (102 steals last 2 years) and he has a career .313 minor league average and tore up the spring. Who cares about K's with an OPS of .886.

4) Coghlan vs. Gaby Sanchez? I disagree. I'll take Sanchez.

5) Matt Dominguez vs. West? I disagree. I'll take West.

As far as saying I listed a lot of fridge prospects......thats the point- we want to keep track of who's going to help us this season....and DeAza, Badenhop (who is much better than Trahern), and Martinez are BETTER at this point than Issac Galloway. The guy is overrated and hasn't proven ANYTHING at all so far.

You have to balance production with upside.

I disagree with your ratings but thanks for commenting.

I will update everyone's stats.

Scouting Report (On a scale of 100)

Power: 52

Speed: 64

Smolinski played in single A. He has a career .280 average, with 5 HR, and 49 RBI in 400 ABs. His SLG % is .399.

At least his scouting report is good according to Baseball America! :confused

Yes he was a 2nd round pick. No he hasn't proven anything.

Most organizations would have him as Top 10? Well not this one. He's not Top 25 in the Marlins organization right now.

At least he's young enough to be considered a prospect.

A good portion of the guys you mentioned...not even prospects. Carlos Martinez???? Seriously? Burke Badenhop?

  • Author

Dominguez.....

Most people won't have him ahead of Sean West right now.

There are questiuons about his bat.

Look what happened last season at Greensboro....

Home Games 1.014 OPS

Away Games .688 OPS

Are you seriously using those horrid thebaseballcube.com scales?

No baseball cube is not accurate. Never has been. That is from Baseball America. I subscribe.

A good portion? Like who? Badenhop is better than Trahern. The defination of prospect is someone in the minor leagues. I believe it'sjust as important to track someone like Carlos Martinez (who will help us this season) as it is to track Hector Correa (who throws hard but just throws the ball- doesn't understand how to pitch just yet and won't help us this season).

I could be wrong.

Too much emphasis is placed on upside and age. You have to balance everything.

Upside/Age is what to look for in a prospect.

I'm sure if you asked most teams...there would be more interest in Trahern, at this point, than Badenhop. The fact Trahern is 3 years younger has to do with it.

Carlos Martinez and Burke Badenhop are not prospects anymore.

I understand that Carlos Martinez at age 27 isn't a prospect. You don't need to explain that. That's why I mentioned his age. It's important to track everyone in the minor leagues- not just 19 year olds who have never done anything.

I think since this is a minor league forum this thread will be used to track everyone- especially Carlos Marintez who could help us this season.

It's nice to see that you care, but this is a terrible list.

What's with the ignorance and negativity on this board?

Especially after reading my 2nd post in this thread about what this isn't....glad to see people can read.

Just because people want to disagree on who should be the Top 11-25 prospects in our system. They are probably the ones who have never attended a minor league baseball game in their lives.

Negativity, sure. Ignorance, not in this case.

If you want somewhere where you can just post your opinion and people can't comment on it, get a diary. Otherwise, get over it.

Most people don't just comment "terrible list" without backing it up with some sort of analysis. Then again with your history of mediocre posts and wonderful knowledge of the Marlins farm system, things like this are expected. Have a great day- maybe one day you will make a list and I will leave a generic one word response like "stupid". :shifty

Then why is he on the list?

The title clearly says "prospects" in it.

It's nice to see that you care, but this is a terrible list.

Heh, my history of mediocre posts is the reason for this:

That's right, I am the reigning "Best Florida Marlins Poster of the Year".

The reason I didn't add all the reasons your list is bad is because everyone said it already, which you just shot down as "my opinion".

Have a terrible day. I hope you run into a wall. (This is a joke, I actually hope you have a fine day and stray from walls.)

This is exactly what's wrong with message boards.....just like what Timmy Hutton was saying about Marlin fans on TV yesterday- negativity.

Define prospect? Who cares what the meaning means- each would have a different meaning. Is Gaby Sanchez at age 25 a prospect? Where's the cut off? Are AAA players not considered prospects by the Marlins?

There is no defination of prospect. There is no age cut off. This is a minor league forum. So I included everyone in our system who has talent like Carlos Martinez.

It's not a big deal unless your bored.

You said yourself that he's not a prospect. How are you going to put a guy who you don't think is a prospect as your 15th best prospect? And even worse, how are you going to get angry about "negativity" when someone calls you on it.

Also, 25/26 is generally the cutoff age for prospect, but those are more guidelines than straight-fast rules.
