April 16, 200917 yr Point being is not to insult do what Lou is doing. Insulting him is not going to breed a desire to learn but rather just breed a hatred for you and create the exact opposite effect, why's he going to listen to somebody he hates. Showing why they are mistaken and how to properly gauge a prospect allows them to learn what they are wrong in and what they are right in.
April 16, 200917 yr Are you seriously using those horrid thebaseballcube.com scales? No baseball cube is not accurate. Never has been. That is from Baseball America. I subscribe. Those numbers are from the baseball cube. Baseball America uses the scale scouts use (20-80 scale). http://www.thebaseballcube.com/Transaction...Smolinski.shtml And the fact that you yourself say that Baseball America says Smolinski is a good prospect should show you that yes, he does have upside. He is going to hit for average, going to have a good OBP, look at his walk and K rates, and should develop into atleast gap power.
April 16, 200917 yr Okay, I couldn't resist, since you said it [at least] twice. WildMarlinMan - they are FRINGE prospects, not "fridge" prospects. Well, maybe Jose Ceda is the latter. I lol'd. :lol I also laughed out loud.
April 16, 200917 yr 14. Jake Smolinksi < - Big omission. He'd be in most organizations top 10. Even higher if he transitions to 2B smoothly I respectfully say, I think you have a lot of work to do to familiarize yourself with the system. Jake Smolinski Scouting Report (On a scale of 100) Power: 52 Speed: 64 Contact: 50 Patience: 55 Smolinski played in single A. He has a career .280 average, with 5 HR, and 49 RBI in 400 ABs. His SLG % is .399. At least his scouting report is good according to Baseball America! :confused Yes he was a 2nd round pick. No he hasn't proven anything. Most organizations would have him as Top 10? Well not this one. He's not Top 25 in the Marlins organization right now. At least he's young enough to be considered a prospect. A good portion of the guys you mentioned...not even prospects. Carlos Martinez???? Seriously? Burke Badenhop? A good portion? Like who? Badenhop is better than Trahern. The defination of prospect is someone in the minor leagues. I believe it'sjust as important to track someone like Carlos Martinez (who will help us this season) as it is to track Hector Correa (who throws hard but just throws the ball- doesn't understand how to pitch just yet and won't help us this season). I could be wrong. Too much emphasis is placed on upside and age. You have to balance everything. Ok I have walked away from this thread 3 times today but I just cant do it anymore. I can only assume you are basing your opinion of Dallas on last year when he a.) pitched in Albuquerque and b.) pitched with an open cut on the thumb of his pitching thumb the entire year. I dont know what Scout you have been talking to, but I know Scouts who think very highly of Trahern. Which is why the Marlins put him on their 40 man roster this season. They didnt want to lose Dallas to another team in the Rule 5 draft. I totally agree with MarlinLou's thoughts on page 2 of this thread.
April 16, 200917 yr I KNOW MORE ABOUT THE MARLINS THAN YOU DO. I CAN BE A DICK ON A FORUM BECAUSE IF I AM ONE IN REAL LIFE I'LL GET BEAT UP AND I AM SAFE FROM BEING BEAT UP HERE. YOU'RE WRONG AND I AM RIGHT. ^rab and erick. This hurts my feelings. Also, this is me in real life: My name is Raul, I go by Rab. I'm 5'11.5" and weigh 174 pounds. As you can tell by looking at my picture, that's not 174 pounds of fat, as I routinely work out. I've never lost a fight in my life and you'd probably not say this to me in real life, for two reasons. 1) People don't act like that in real life. 2) I'm a generally nice guy. How do you pronounce Raul?
April 16, 200917 yr This list is not bad at all, some of you are over reacting. As much as Lou knows about Marlins baseball, he is not the end all be all on the Marlin's prospects. And he knows how much I respect his opinion, but when ranking prospects you can debate whether prospect A should be higher than B, but you can't say it with certainty in most cases; especially once you get past the top tier. Ranking prospects is subjective. I look at our top 30 list and I don't see one guy on there who doesn't have a hole that could lead to him being a bust/not an everyday player. All of them have some major flaws (especially when you get past Morrison) and when you rank them 3-30 it comes down to opinion based on the facts and sources you are using. Wild obviously is using different resources than most, and I have no problem with that seeing as how bland and predictable every single other Marlins list is (or most other prospect lists) that all use the same things to determine rankings when reality is they absolute will have just as many hits and misses if we compare lists in 5 years. It's all subjective when ranking - when you get to lower levels there is no correct answers and it's nice to read a different opinion.

Rating anyone outside of the Top 10 is subjective. The thing I find funniest about this whole thread is it wasn't made for ranking people 1-2-3. It was made as an easy access reference sheet to see stats of how our prospects are doing throughtout the season.
April 16, 200917 yr Author Tonight's stars.... Brett Sinkbeil w (1-1) 6 ip, 6 h, 3 er, 0 bb, 5 k AND 2-3, 2b, 3 rbi! Jai Miller 3-5, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI Sean West (who according to Lou should never be ranked ahead of Dominguez) had an average start. 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K- WIN B.Petersen 0-3, 2 K- (Continues to show people he's better than John Raynor according to some) :lol Michael Stanton 3-6, now hitting .333 Dominguez 2-6, hitting .250 Kris Harvey- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K Paul Gran 2-7, 2B, hitting .370 (guess he isn't a prospect according to some people) Skipworth 1-3, 2B, RBI, hitting .263 Issac Galloway 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, hitting .294
April 16, 200917 yr Well, nevermind on not insulting the cat after he decides to make sarcastic jabs at people based off of a 1 game sample size.
April 16, 200917 yr Tonight's stars.... Sean West (who according to Lou should never be ranked ahead of Dominguez) had an average start. 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K- WIN B.Petersen 0-3, 2 K- (Continues to show people he's better than John Raynor according to some) :lol Paul Gran 2-7, 2B, hitting .370 (guess he isn't a prospect according to some people) BA has Dominguez 64, and West 96. And West is coming off an arm injury. Maybe you also missed West's prior start where he gave up 3 HR, if you want to play sample size. Let's use the good start, and ignore the shelling that happened 5 days ago! No one if their right mind would take West's volatility as a starter over Dominguez, whose glove is MLB ready and as soon as he can show he can hit at all, is going to be up and probably be Joe Crede overnight with more hitting potential in his prime. If you want to play sample size more, John Raynor is hitting .167 in AAA with a robust .397 OPS. Petersen, is doing better than that. Even using your weak sample size analysis, you still lose. Do you understand anything about BABIP? If you don't, you really need to look at it and check out Raynor's ungodly luck last year. And Gran projects, at best best, to be a utility guy. Those guys don't make prospect lists over fire baller arms who can turn into starting pitchers. Safety in prospect comes in at some point - which is why I put an older and safe Taylor over guys that have better "stuff" than him like Kaminska, Brewer, and Sanabia - but safety in moving levels from college players and becoming the moderate player they can be, does not mean they exhibit any true upside to get excited about. Most organizations post-10 prospect list don't matter, but I have never seen in my life a team that has a legitimate top 30 like the Marlins do right now. We have something very special brewing, and it's not very smart to litter your list with 6/7th relievers and 24th and 25th men who are simply older or at higher levels, over high upside players who have moderate to better chances of breaking out and becoming serious prospects. A great example is Morrison, who went from a draft and follow nobody with some breakout potential, to one the best hitting prospects in all of baseball in 1 calendar year. Gran is not going to do this. Andrelczyk is not going to do this. But Sanabia can. So can Brewer, or Olmos, or a lot of our other pitching prospects. Guys like Hickman and Burns, and even Langley, who are system after thoughts right now, have more breakout potential than a lot of the junk you are touting as good prospects. Developing 6/7 relievers and 25th men is whatever. Those guys are free at all times in free agency and waivers. Developing impact players is what its about, and impact players is how you rate your farm system. You are currently not doing that beyond our obvious top 9-10 or so players. That is a major problem if you want to be as sarcastic as you are in this thread. But feel free to rate all the future Amezagas and Badenhops of the world if that is your heart's desire. That's just not where the strength of our system is.

April 16, 200917 yr I like Sanabia, Brewer, and Olmos alot - especially Olmos. And yet they didn't make your top 37 (top 25+12 others to watch).
April 16, 200917 yr Author I like Sanabia, Brewer, and Olmos alot - especially Olmos. And yet they didn't make your top 37 (top 25+12 others to watch). Those aren't rankings man. Are you serious? Willie Glen over Olmos' arm? No way....Glen is just someone to watch. You guys are making this a numerical ranking thread where I've stated right away, it is not. It's a keep track of statistics for minor leaguers thread.
April 16, 200917 yr 19- MIGUEL FERMIN ?, 24, A JUP .273, 0 HR, 0 RBI - 1 BB/ 3 K He hit .347 with 17 HR, and 47 RBI in Greensboro last season but he's 24 and needs to improve his strikeout judgement. Still, there's something to be said about his skills. 24- PAUL GRAN (3B/UTIL), 23, A GREEN .400, 0 HR, 2 RBI Gran has hit at every level and was an excellent college hitter. He could become a utility player if everything breaks right. He's 5'11 and 182 lbs. Fermin put up those numbers in Jamestown, not Greensboro Gran has it at one level, Jamestown. Not every level.
April 16, 200917 yr Those aren't rankings man. Are you serious? Willie Glen over Olmos' arm? No way....Glen is just someone to watch. You guys are making this a numerical ranking thread where I've stated right away, it is not. It's a keep track of statistics for minor leaguers thread. No problem. Just so everyone knows..... 1) I never claim to be an expert 2) I do not know EVERY prospect 3) My rankings are based on my opinion (everyone has their own) However, I will update everyone's stats all season, only write facts about what I read or know about prospects, and I do claim to be a big minor league baseball fan as I have attended many Carolina, Jupiter, and even 1 Greensboro game in the past. So I have seen many of these players live. To answer your question, I heard they are trying to work Langley out at 1st base but he's the only other catcher on the team. This has to be a good year for Torre- he could be boom or bust. It's nice to see that you care, but this is a terrible list. What's with the ignorance and negativity on this board? Especially after reading my 2nd post in this thread about what this isn't....glad to see people can read. Just because people want to disagree on who should be the Top 11-25 prospects in our system. They are probably the ones who have never attended a minor league baseball game in their lives. You absolutely cannot say that these are not numerical rankings. I understand that your watch list is "in no particular order". But your first 25 are absolutely in your perceived order. I'm sure there are several other instances. I only looked through the 1st page. I don't know if you are trying to cop out, or if this was an honest misstatement. But you absolutely, 100% made this into a numerical rankings thread. And you've spent 4 pages discussing/arguing those rankings with others (not implying that you're being particularly argumentative here, just characterizing the overall nature of the discourse).
April 16, 200917 yr Author my 1st 25 are numerical order....the watch list is not. no cop out here. its my opinion. thanks for your own as well
April 17, 200917 yr Kaminska, Olmos, Brewer, and Sanabia along with Petersen to a lesser extent is a excellent corps of young arms. I still wish we had found a way to sign Kellen St. Luce out of that 2007 draft.
April 17, 200917 yr Author Just came home from the Brevard County Manatees (Brewers) vs. Tampa Yankees game....was a good game. A couple of studs played.... Anyway....tonight's heros are- John Raynor 2-4, BB, 2B.....hitting .214 Gaby Sanchez 2-5, 2 RBI.....hitting .382 A.DeAza 1-1, hitting .368 Carlos Martinez 0.2, hitless ................................................... Lorenzo Scott 2-4, 3 runs, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, BB...........hitting .400 Bryan Petersen 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, BB......hitting .259 Matt Craig 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI.....hitting .273 Brad Davis 3-5, 2B....hitting .286 Willie Glen 6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K - win (1-1) ............................................... Matt Dominguez 1-3, BB...hitting .261 Thomas Hickman 1-4, HR, 2 RBI....hitting .053 Kyle Winters 6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K....ERA now stands at 0.75 ............................ Brandon Turner (2B) 3-3, BB, RBI.....hitting .333 Justin Jacobs 2-5, 2B, 3 K......hitting .357 Ben Lasater (3B) is a new guy to watch. He went 3-5, 2 2B (5 on season), 2 K......hitting .379
