Bonifacio to apologize

Given a night to simmer down, Emilio Bonifacio said on Saturday that he plans to apologize to umpire Ed Rapuano.

In the heat of the moment on Friday night, Bonifacio slammed his helmet beyond first base in the ninth inning after Rapuano called him out on a close call.

Leading off the inning, Bonifacio hit the ball hard, and first baseman James Loney made a nice diving stop. Loney flipped to pitcher Jonathan Broxton, who was covering first. TV replays seemed to show Bonifacio's foot touched the base first, although it was very close.

In disgust, Bonifacio spiked his helmet, drawing an equipment fine.

"I'm going to tell him I'm sorry," Bonifacio said before Saturday's game.

After seeing the replay, Bonifacio says he felt he was safe.

The Marlins lost 6-4 on Friday, and had Bonifacio been ruled safe, it may have changed the outcome. Broxton walked Chris Coghlan and Hanley Ramirez, putting the tying runs on base with no outs. Yet, the Dodgers closer was able to seal the victory.

"We had two runners on," Bonifacio said. "It was frustrating."

Bonifacio says he has never thrown his helmet like that before.

What disturbed manager Fredi Gonzalez is a fan threw a big cup, filled with a drink, onto the field. The cup landed near first base.

"That, for me, shouldn't happen," Gonzalez said. "You have a chance to hurt someone."

damn, I was on the third base side, missed the whole cup incident.

Rapuano should apologize to Bonifacio. And Uggla, and Gonzalez, and to the Marlins as an organization for sucking at life so badly.

i second this. i didn't see the game live but i saw the recap and those calls were bulls***.

Maybe the cup was filled with piss haha

What? He blew the call, he should say sorry to boni. And want about the call he blew with dan.

Maybe the cup was filled with piss haha

it was filled with sh*t, like the call itself... bulls***

Classy of him and all, but it should be the other way around.

Rapuano fails at life, he should be apologizing to everyone for that pitiful performance... I bet Uggla felt like punching him in the face!

I felt like punching him in the face, so I'm sure that those actually playing the game felt like beating the sh*t out of him. That man MUST be blind for the Uggla call, at least the Bonifacio call was a close play at 1st.

Absolutely correct.

i was at the game too idk if they showed it on tv but the second base ump yelled at a security guard "get him the hell outta here he threw a drink on the field get him out now !" and it wasnt even him and other ushers came to his defense the jerk shouldve felt dumb after that

I was on the left field side. Yeah if you heard a bunch of people harrassing Jonathon Bronxton before he went to pitch and if you heard people screaming towards Juan Pierre, yep that was me :D

That ump was atrocious, Uggla yelling bulls*** and waving his hand at him was hilarious.

They were pretty bad calls. But ya gotta be able to play through that. Just alot of frustration coming out. Players, fans, and posters here. In all honesty, he didn't do bad Saturday night. Maybe Joe West had a little conversation with him. You also have to give some credit to Torre for questioning that call. And just by observing things 2 nights in a row, it seems like Rapuano is a bit intimidated by him.

So, let me get this straight. Bonifacio, who did his job in being safe at first, is apologizing to an umpire who was either a) too blind or b) too stupid or c) unaware of the MLB rulebook and therefore NOT doing his job? I don't get it

This is just a baseball ritual, as much for the umpire as the rookie player (yeah, yeah, save your breath explaining that EB isn't a rookie, but in this situation he might as well be which is the point) where in the player initiates the dialogue so that both parties can move on. Rapuano knows he robbed EB of a hit, and the Marlins a potential game-altering opportunity, he's reviewed the tape, the people overviewing umpiring have reviewed the tape as has MLB, he'll accept Bonifacio's apology, put his hand on EB's shoulder and say something like "That really was a close play wasn't it..." with a smile and a pat and a handshake and both will walk away knowing what just took place. An umpire is never going to go to a player to apologize about a call, and I doubt EB is being sent to this little fireside chat unless Rapuano either (through back channels) requested it or perhaps Joe West wanted the air cleared between his crew and the team.

The whole thing is a good argument for replay review on stuff like this.

Instead of wasting 5 minutes on managers/coaches/players arguing back and forth with umps and each other and getting some of them tossed and/or fined or having a hockey game break out with people running in from the bullpens, they could spend 2 minutes reviewing the video and make a calm decision based on reality instead on a bunch of inconclusive or bad real-time views.

Rapuano is stuck with his bad calls either way. The MLB ump reviewers will have given him a minus 2 for those calls, he's not likely to show up in post-season if he keeps it up.

I'm no fan of delays, but some of this stuff just demands it, especially when it's in a potentially game-changing situation.
