The Missing Piece

Featured Replies

It's become obvious that the Marlins need to make a few changes. I honestly doubt we can make the playoffs if we continue to field the same players day in and day out.

Personally, I think we need to add a consistent bat that will provide balance to our lineup and hopefully a high on base percentage. We have a couple of options. First off we can give Gaby Sanchez a shot and see if he can contribute. If not, we can acquire a bat via trade. The July 31 trading deadline is a few weeks away and I'm sure non contending teams are willing to sell high, especially with the economy now a days.

Our starting pitching is clearly our strength and when healthy our bullpen can be quite efficient. For example, the streak of not allowing a run for 20+ innings this year (I believe it's happened twice). Anyways, just wanted to hear your opinions and see what this team needs to become a legit playoff contender.

we are a good team but its guys like hermida who just dont show up for 2 or 3 series at a time.

i dont know what the hell has gone wrong with john bakers bat but we were definitley banking on him and if he can get going it would be huge.

our starters are doing a good job and hopefully kiko will come back asap.

i really like bonifacios tools but right now we need a bat and i would not mind giving gaby sanchez a chance at third and sending boni to AAA to perfect his game.

We really need another .850+ OPS hitter besides Hanley. Doesn't matter if it's OBP filled #2 hitter or SLG filled #4 hitter.

If we're seriously contending, and I mean the FO says "we need to go balls out, this is our chance because several guys won't be here next year", that means we need to make a trade.

If we're more playing it as "the better we do the better, but we need to insure that '10 and '11 we have winning seasons before the stadium opens" or whatever, just call up Gaby and pray that he can put up a good enough line and that atleast somebody out of Cantu/Cody/Uggla becomes .850+, Hermida and Baker show up again, and Coghaln keeps creeping to the .800 OPS mark.

I just hope that they don't do something drastic for a bullpen arm. With so many injuries, short term, yeah, we need help. But our offense is a bigger issue than our bullpen, and when Kiko comes back and eventually lindstrom we have very little need for another BP arm. If we make a splash, it needs to be for a bat.

The Marlins aren't a "good" team, they an average team. If the front office does not make any moves, I can easily see a repeat of last year's standings playing out in the NL East.

O.k first off in the Marlins defense, they are a good team. We have the best rotation in the N.L east by far, and more than likely top 3 in the National League. Our bullpen is above average when healthy and not overworked. Our hitting is inconsistent but that happens when you have two rookies on your team and an unbalance lineup. I wish i can manage this team, Fredi is a good coach but he needs to utilize the skills of this team better.

Good teams are teams like Boston and Tampa Bay, the ones who beat the Marlins brains in.

The NL East is weak, yes, but that doesn't make the Marlins a good team because they are in contention. A good team would be leading this division by at least give games.

The Marlins are a good team in a crappy division. We can beat up on the NL Central and West, but we can't do well against the east.

IF we play .700 within out division the rest of the way, we will be in 1st place.

The Fish are 16-10 against the NL East, 6-13 vs the NL Central, and 6-7 vs the NL West. 10-8 vs the AL East as well. Not really sure what you are basing your post off of.

O.k, move Baker back to the 2nd slot. Having Hanley hit behind him is all it takes to get the production we all expected from John Baker before the season kicked off. However, there is more than a single missing piece for this team to seriously contend. Being a team 1 game playing under 500 and just 3 games off the pace speaks for itself of our division.

First, Boni out. Line up shake both offensively and defensively. Can Uggla play 1st? If so, move Cantu back to 3rd, Coghlan play 2nd ( I bet he's better than Uggla at that position ) and Uggla at 1st. Platoon Herm/Gload/De Aza in left, Cody in cf and BC in rf ( he'll have better numbers if he played more regularly ). This is all thinking we're sticking to what we have. Personally, I don't think Gaby Sanchez is the solution.

So, our lineup could be:

1. Coghlan

2. Baker

3. Hanley

4. Cantu

5. Uggla

6. left fielder

7. Cody

8. Carroll

When Paulino catches he could hit 6th and whoever is in left hits 2nd.

I know guys there could be a lot of you who don't agree with it, but, this is what we can do if our FO decides to go with what we got

a 3rd baseman, a closer, and hermida and baker to turn it around. it seems we inquired on soria and heath bell once some of our arms went on the DL but it would take a truck load to get one of those guys.

Based on the fact that the Padres suck, Rockies are streaky, Diamondbacks streaky, Pirates suck, Reds should suck, Cubs are falling, Astros are/were reeling.

And the fact we get to play the Nats, and Braves a bunch more.

Here's the problem. While our starting pitching is top-notch, our offense is inconsistent, and our bullpen is average. That means 2/3 need improvement. I don't see this team making the playoffs if there are no changes or additions.

The thing is, if they can run well enough to get into the playoffs, I think the team is set up well to win those types of series. Being able to set the rotation so you get multiple games from JJ/Nolasco/Volstad is huge, compared to teams who just have 5 ok starters.

I understand the concern everyone has. We are an inconsistent team that needs another bat and maybe another arm for the pen. But be careful what you wish for. Personally, I don't want to trade one of our top prospects for something that might not happen. Someone like Anibal Sanches ok, but someone like Dominguez would kill me.

well, yeh. But the difference between the two staffs is probably bizarro Ricky's first 8 starts or so and Andrew miller's oblique injury.

Let's be honest. If you had the choice to choose between the Atlanta Braves rotation or the Marlins for the 2009 season, which rotation would you choose?

You can't determine which team has the best rotation by E.R.A alone, there are a lot of things that come into play.

Also, a few of our guys have faced injuries and Sean West has about a month of big league experience. This rotation should be scary in the 2nd half of the season.

I wouldn't necessarily say that West will improve upon what he has already done. Any time you see a guy massively outperform what his MLE's should be, he's probably more than likely going to regress some. West has been pretty darn good at times but he has also been somewhat lucky. He will probably regress a bit at some point and how he recovers will let us know a lot better who the real Sean West is.

West is probably going to be pretty good long term so no worries there, I just worry about him hitting a cold stretch down the stretch.

You couldn't trade Anibal Sanchez for a bag of balls at this point. At least somebody would be making a very bad trade if they gave us anything of value in return.

If the rotation stays healthy my guess is from here on out we'll have an ERA around 4.20 which is good but not great. I think the Braves will do better than that the rest of the way.

So I'm guessing you choose the Braves rotation? No offense against the Braves, they have great arms (Lowe, Vazquez Jurrjens and now Hanson) but I would go with the Marlins young guns. Vazquez has is injury prone, Lowe was solid at the beginning of the year but has been average as of late. Jurrjens and Hanson are the two starters that stick out but Hanson has only thrown 29 innings this year.

Johnson> Jurrjens

Volstad> Hanson

Nolasco> Lowe

Miller< Vazquez

West> Kawakami

You would take Volstad over Tommy Hanson? Hanson is the real deal. Volstad is a number three in most rotations.

Once again Hanson has pitched a grand total of 29 innings. So yes, for now I will take Volstad.
