Hanley to start ASG, Josh on roster

MIAMI GARDENS - For the eighth time in nine years, the Marlins will have multiple representatives at the All-Star Game.

In addition to Hanley Ramirez, who is expected to start at shortstop for the second consecutive season, a baseball source confirmed right-hander Josh Johnson will join him on the National League squad.

The official announcement will come at 1 p.m. in a selection show on TBS.

Johnson has an excellent chance of getting into the July 14 game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. He is scheduled to start the first-half finale two days earlier in Arizona. The All-Star Game falls on his throw day.

The 6-7 Johnson has established himself as one of the National League's top arms. Through Saturday, his 2.76 ERA ranked seventh in the NL. He also is fourth in innings (114 1/3) and sixth in opponents' batting average (.228).

Johnson is the first Marlins pitcher to garner an All-Star bid since Dontrelle Willis in 2005. Other Marlins starters to make the team: Carl Pavano (2004), Willis (2003), Ryan Dempster (2000), Kevin Brown (1996-97) and Al Leiter (1996).

Hanley was a no-brainer, but it's great to see that JJ gets to go as well. He deserves to be there and let the rest of the baseball world know who he is and what he can do (if they don't already know)

sweet, they definitely deserve to make the team. but i posted on the major league section about how outraged i am about pedroia and hamilton voted in as starters.

congrats to both....for me, I don't have much interest in AS games except to see the players from my favorite team. although the WS home field advantage has change that perspective over the years...

I'm not sure why some were worried about JJ.

He's almost as much of a no-brainer as Hanley was, really.

Because sometimes the AS selections seem to be done with no brain.

for sure. sometimes players get in with popularity instead of performance....cough...cough..varitek last season.

Varitek is the most overrated player in baseball...easily.

have they announced who the starting pitcher will be ??

Not at all, but the ASG just happens to fall on JJ's throw day...

Hasn't he caught a few no hitters? In fact, I believe Varitek brings as much clubhouse and in game leadership to a team than anyone else in baseball.

So I don't think he's over-rated at all, especially at the catcher position.

Both selections are well-deserved. Glad to see that Johnson is going, since he doesn't get a lot of attention despite his numbers.

Thanks for proving my point.
