How untouchable is Stanton?

Featured Replies

I can't see them trading stanton ...... the guy is such a high level prospect i believe the marlins intend on using him for a couple years at a lower cost

i think they're banking on getting early contributions on the miggy/hanley level from when they came up and at the same time not having to sink immediate financial resources into him

I may be wrong but wasn't Miquel Cabrera untouchable, i think he now play for the Tigers.

That is TOTALLY different. He would of been untouchable as a prospect but once his contract demands got excessive, it was time to move him on. By the time Stanton reaches the same stage, we will be better equipped with the stadium and a higher payroll and providing he realises his potential at the major league level, then chances are we can lock him up for a long long time.

Sorry guys I don't know much about the minor leaguers, why is Stanton so great?

You don't know much about the Marlins either I take it! :thumbdown

HA why is Stanton so great? Well Cuz he is ok! He's as close to a can't miss prospect as there is! Much like Miguel Cabrera he's a head of the game at his age, and is projected to put up Cabrera like numbers... You do know who Miguel Cabrera is right? :confused

Yes I know about the marlins, but not so much about their AA and AAA affiliates... I spend my time watching the pros, not the minor leaguers.

Don't sweat it. Most of these people have never watched any of the guys in the minors either. Not even in ST. They go all on what their numbers are and what the scouts say, which IMO can be very decieving at times. But Stanton is a special player. And with the added income of the new ballpark will most likely be a Marlin for a very long time. He is one of maybe 3 or 4 guys in the minors that are untouchable. Unless of course someone makes an offer that is so eye popping that it would be considered criminally insane.

If that's true then you've gotta like our chances for being a huge force once we're in the new stadium.

To further solidify how untouchable Stanton is, here is an article I stumbled across through mlbtraderumors a few mins ago:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-bulletin/2009/268579.html

Mike Stanton, of, Marlins & Jason Heyward, of, Braves

The two best prospects in the game are truly untouchable for the right reason. They're similar to Sizemore as future franchise centerpieces.

Not sure exactly how you define "can't-miss", but that's not an accurate statement. While I'm on the bandwagon, his K-rates are high enough to warrant a hesitation in calling him a can't-miss prospect. That said, you can't ignore the scouting reports, numbers, and impressive raw footage of Giancarlo Cruz-Michael Stanton.

Prediction: Stanton becomes the next Albert Pujols, and annual NL MVP.

I doubt he'd be that great since his BB/K rate is pretty bad.

He could be Griffey Jr. like hitting from .270 to low .300's with 30+ Homeruns a year or a Ryan Howard like hitter, hitting in mid .200's(.250- .270) with 35 + Homeruns.

It doesn't really matter who you compare him to though because if he reaches his potential he could be a great hitter for many years to come.

I love the looks of a lineup with Maybin, Coghlan, Hanley, Stanton and Morrison. Then a little while after if they can progress in the minors Skipworth and Dominguez.

Yeah, Pujols is a horrible comparison. Pujols is not a HR hitter, he is a top-5 line driving hitter of all time that just so happens to have power.

Mike Stanton is a FB hitter with massive power, but with someone of his size he is going to have too long of a swing to ever really make that consitant of contact.

This guy on the other hand....

He has the LD rates, the BABIP, the walks, the contact, above average power

He'll likely be more Miguel Cabrera then Pujols though. Pujols only strikes out 10% of the time, Cabrera around 20%, and Logan will likely be more around 20%.

Like I said before the looks of a lineup with Maybin, Coghlan, Hanley, Stanton, Morrison makes me feel happy, then we hope Dominguez and Skippy pan out. To add to that guys like Raynor, Cousins, Peterson, Galloway, Carroll, Sanchez and Smolinski to mix is also a plus since they all have pretty good potential and to add maybe even Cody/Hermida, Bonifacio and Baker could also be around.

I agree about the (non) cant-miss part. Stanton is an incredible prospect, but labeling him can't miss is deceiving. But his upside (and his reasonable chance of reaching it) makes him untouchable.

And for what its worth, he comes across as humble and hard-working in every interview from Inside the Marlins. And I think character can be a big part of whether you can trade a prospect or not.

Yeah no matter how you slice it, if his power shows up in the majors he's gonna be a valuable and dangerous hitter.

What I loved was sometime last year when Flemming talked about his defense, how he's worked continually with them to improve his defense, how he completely re-did his throwing mechanics. Doing it because he wants to be awesome at everything. That he can share with Pujols.

When somebody with his power puts that much time to improve something as trivial in comparison as defense is, you know he's busting his ass on offense.

Worst case to me is Russell Branyan's down years, so upper 700 to 800 OPS of something like .230/.320/.460. Branyan was still averaging upper 30s to low 40s HRs per 650 PA in those years. But not really anything special. Still enough to be an average starter though. So when you have a guy who's at worst an average starter, that's pretty damn good lol. Well, I mean, assuming power of coarse, which should only go away if he suffers injuries.

When talking about his power, I think Beinfest sums things up best when he talks about how young players are usually projected for power, but Stanton already has that power. And that just shows how amazing his raw ability really is.

But there is a lot more to hitting home runs in the majors and I think exhibit A is Delmon Young. Considering the incredible power Young possessed at such a young age, it's almost unthinkable that his offensive numbers in his third year of major league time are but a fraction better than Emilio Bonifacio's.

Stanton is so untouchable he's kept in a Hyperbaric chamber and only comes out of it for night games.

Stanton is so untouchable his nickname is "Lincecum".

That has no doubt been the cause of great wailing and gnashing of teeth in some quarters. If you listen closely, you can hear the faint emanations from Minneapolis.

Hopefully, Stanton avoids that outcome.

I would trade Stanton for the first baseman in San Diego that we watched last night. He has a great contract for the next three years and is exactly the kind of bopper Hanley needs to have behind him in the order. Stanton may be very good some day. AG will definitely be great for the Marlins for the next few years. Cantu and Stanton for AG.
